here's my hard sell, claire:

you start your myspace page and add all the bbmb people. then you search for photos to put in their comment section, or you type something that pretty much makes sense to only you and the person whose space you commented on. then weird people you don't know send messages in broken english trying to get you to add them and chat on one of your messengers. 21 year old boys then leave you messages like "u r so hott baby" and you tell them thanks and then ignore them when they want to add you. you then get so many friends from both the bbmb and from your work, school, etc., that you have to expand the number of top friends you have, and it becomes a chore to figure out who is on your top friends list and who isn't, and you pretend to get pissed when your man adds you because tom, the universal friend, is his first person in the friend list and you're number 2, and clearly he doesn't even know tom and tom doesn't really care whether he's first or deleted or what. but he didn't know you were teasing and he gets all exasperated saying that's why he resisted it for so long, and it's stupid, etc.

for real though, several friends i'd lost track of have found me on myspace. one of them was from middle school. and gus is dead on -- local bars with myspace accounts post bulletins with upcoming events, so you don't find out about the stuff the day after it happened.

It's starting to be too many when changing my profile (I usually had some themes: girl groups, punk rock, glam, Swedish indie, goth, Australia, Scandinavian r'n'r etc), so I haven't changed it for ages. I really liked the Beastie Boys one I did, all the BBMB-members had a Beastie-pic as their profile pic! :D (wish I'd saved the code or a screen print at least...)
My friends are mainly a collection of people from here, BRMC forum, Ed Harcourt forum, bands I like (at first I even added bands that asked to be my friend if I liked them even a little, now I get too many friend requests from bands I almost always skip them, but sometimes old favourites find me), clubs, venues and festivals I'm interested in as also magazines, record companies, radio stations....(I like to know what's going on) and actually a few that I know IRL as well.

That's what's happened to me as well. I've made better friends with a few people after we found each other on My Space, we'd always seen each other at gigs, but never dared to talk, but now we have even greater time at the front! :D Also I'm getting more hugs ;)

The worse (or maybe not) of those dissappearing friends not dissappearing from the amount of friends, so like it says I have 1262 friends there's only (approx) 1137 active. Loads of bands have dissappeared, loads of fake sites have dissappeared when the real ones find out about them and some delete themselves again and again, coming back with a new alias (usually because they've gotten too much spam, not realising you can change your e-mail address pretty easily...).
I rarely delete anyone, I did with BJM once cause Anton posts bulletins by the minute, but then I added them again when they were coming over... I don't need to read his bulletins if I don't wanna... (he only complains about Bush and Iraq anyway).

I try to keep contact with all those that matter the most, at least send a birthday message. That's the least I can do. And I love receiving pictures and funny comments....:p

Got some old classmates from my old Catholic school (who never talk to me), a few people from here, a few people from other message boards, some famous people (Avril Lavigne, Kevin Smith, Mike Nelson). Got Morgan Webb, Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn from G4, Skye Sweetnam, WWE Crusierweight Champion Gregory Helms, TNA wrestlers Samoa Joe and Petey Williams, Quarashi, even though they broke up over a year ago. And I've got probably a good 20 or 30 artists/bands that requested me. I've never listened to most of them. I just hate denying friend requests when they're from independent bands and artists.

The Beastie Boys STILL haven't added me yet, and this is my 3rd time requesting them.

That's actually a pet peeve of mine. When somebody decides to delete their profile, you don't technically "lose" your friend count. It's now just a blank space where your friend used to be. So even though I have 145 friends (deleted one last night), that number is probably 132 due to the people who end up deleting their profiles.

Why can't those MySpace powers that be give me the right numbers? :mad:
