i know this is a touchy subject but why is it that most of the beastie boys fans are white? i know that they are white, obviously, but it seems that their fans are mostly white, & other white rappers like Eminem have a more diverse fanbase.

Because people identify with people that are similar. The boys have respect among blacks in the industry, but outside of that, people tend to group with like minded/looking/sounding etc. others. I grew up as a white Jamaican and often identify with things/people who are black more easily than mainstream American whites. But when I was young and figuring out what I liked in music, these guys spoke to other parts of me through the images they recycled. I identified with the skateboarding, the white skin with dark hair and eyes, the ideas, etc., but I was drawn to the music because it was also rythmic and sexual. There's a little black in their ying, but yes, they are white and so you can expect more whites to identify both visually and culturally. I'm speaking in generalizations of course, but in general it's true. From DJ Red Lantern to the black dancing usher in AIFST, you do hear/see the same message -- a lot of their music is culturally black. It's funky.

exactly. lately, everyone likes the beastie boys. not too many people i meet that dislike them. in the begining, a lot of people thought they were taunting rap, much like weird al, not taking it seriously. but they did earn thier respect and most of the bullshit was tossed aside and they were treated with respect.
as for eminem, i still hate him. the media constantly calling him (or was) the new clown of rap.
im sorry, but according to me, the beasties never gave up thier crowns.

no....it was because "rap" was a black thang in the begining. it has barely anything to do with thier prior musical work. do you think kids on the street listening to rap knew what they did before? Ya gotta remember, this was before the internet and things werent as accessible as they are today.
they did rap since 83 so by the time they were into LTI, they were respected by most of thier peers, including RUN DMC. thry just needed street cred from the fans/public.

well, you really couldnt classify them as "alternitive" because they are actually all over the place when it comes to music. yes, they have made thier place in rap and some punk, but when the grunge scene came out, they fit just perfectly. I wouldnt call thier music from CYH "alternative", just "cleverly written". you really couldnt put them in a catagory after that album.

If your talking about fans ethnicity...just watch the AIFST DVD audience.
Or take a look around you at the next Beastie Boys concert.
Here in Chicago they are really only played on the Alternative Rock stations.
Don't believe they are too popular on BET, neither.
But there are a lot of WHITE people that dont like the BB's.
I know ALOT of CLOSET BEASTIE BOYS FANS that are BLACK and WHITE...not admiting true props. However, like DEEP SEA RAIN mentioned, there are people that are true to hip-hop that will give MAD respect to the B-BOYS.
So i guess that its like "how many licks will it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop"?,..."the world may never know".
I say FUCK the people that are not gonna admit they are moved by the Beasties, just because they are afraid of being critized by others who are not...they arent true to themselves. That goes for all those sucka, fake ass DJ's and VJ's that are afraid too.

You were unsure of something and I confirmed it (MTV didn't give Intergalactic a "best alternative video" award, it won for rap video). Doesn't mean I think grammies are important, though they do typically gauge a band's critical/respect standing.

I'm an African American who listens to mainstream hip-hop and underground. I know alot of black people don't listen to the beastie boys because they make assumptions like I once did. Before I actually took the time to listen to the Beastie Boys, I thought what probably most black people past and present thought of them: screaming white boys. I used to be a fan of Eminem, but the reason I'm not is the very reason why I love the Beastie Boys. They have known who they are for years, where Eminem as of lately doesn't know who he wants to be. But the first Beastie Boys album I listened to is also the one that I feel will give a non-fan an idea of who they are: Sounds of Science. Black people who like the Beastie Boys and aren't afraid to admit it are the same black people who listen to old 60s white rockers, or any other form of music that isn't considered black music, meaning they don't give a fuck what other black people think. Too many black youth care what others think or what is deemed white. It's a shame as blacks that we feel we have to only listen to what is deemed black music.

I'm a black dude and I'm 29 years old. My first rap tape was LTI. When they first came out, it was not cool to be white and into rap. Yet, because of being down with Def Jam and the beats were so dope. Nobody could deny it. Also rap was still an underground black thing, so the black kids were really their first rap fans(until fight for your right came out). So the black community was down at the beginning.
Me personally I think that alot of black people just like that commercial bullshit instead of real hip hop. The same black dude who think the beasties are wack will say madlib, mf doom, and other dope black emcees are wack. I don't think it is race per se. I think it is they make that real shit and people of all races are not ready for those obscure lyrics and beats. Alot of people of all races that like that real shit think the beasties are ill. Its just those mainstream people who wanna hear that gangsta crunk thug bullshit think that the beasties are not good. Unfortunatly alot of black kids fall in that category. The real heads know what's up.

I have to aggree with everyone's opinion. For real for real as Qtip wuold say. I know alotta black people will not lissen to them cuz they white and Jewish and it is a black thing, however the beasties are trying be black per se or even mock African culture nor being in black face. They know who they are, what they are and how they got to where they're at. But once all of my closest friends, who happen to be black, latino, asian and middle eastern got to lissen and digest their lyrics, their beats, and their instrusmentals all of a sudden I converted a shit load of non-lovers of beasties to lovers of their musique and can't wait for another tour. I mean once all of the negative stereotypes are squashed about what is and what isn't cool or down, then all real heads of the culture of HIP-HOP will thrive and live. I'm white or caucasion, and heres my thought....I get alotta heat from white people for being with Public Enemy, Dead Prez, Black Star, and Talib & Mos and for being down with Malcolm X and Black Panthers and the whole Black Power Movement, now I get heat cuz I guess I sold out my "people" sort of say. NOw I held convoes with everyone of every ethnic background and why is it that if you're white or black you are limited to what you can do or what to believe. I find inspiration and motivation and connection with anything positive...

Well they're an older group, so most kids (white or black) might not even know of them. And this is most likely because of MTV or the mainstream radio stations (which never play the BBoys) and they don't try to expand their musical knowledge or whatever. And if they have heard of them and like them, they probably won't want to admit it for many possible reasons. Also, eminem has more black fans because he's more mainstream and works with more mainstream rappers. The key word is here is "mainstream". :p But my point is, I don't think race has everything to do with it.

I have no idea what you are talking about.Yet, everything I mention is correct. Hip Hop in the 80's was no where near as popular as it is now. You're right that Run DMC was very successful but one group does not make a whole movement popular, it was still a long way to go to have alot of groups on a worldwide level. Radio in the 80's played hip hop at night only. I specifically remember hearing hip hop between 12:00pm-3:00pm on WGCI with Disco Dave and Pinkhouse.
I grew up in a diverse neighborhood in the 80's and I can tell you first hand that white kids were not up on hip hop like that. The Beasties made white america real uncomfortable for a while. Why do you think they were one of the biggest acts. Rap was already wierd for alot of people of all races but when some white dudes did it...that was wild. Why the fuck you think they were so popular for? It was different from every single thing that was out.

The Beasties made white america real uncomfortable for a while.
Agreed!!! I was 10 at the time and I still remember this..my parents being very uncomfortable with me and my older sister liking the Beastie Boys..my mom refused to let me see the "Together Forever" tour when it came to Norfolk..she read up on them...the controv-ersy (as Mike D pronounces) was all over the news back then.

80% of all Hip Hop albums are sold in the suburbs so apparently alot of other Hip Hop artists out there have "white" fans too. I went to a see Outkast & Ludacris about 5 yrs ago and guess what? Yup! you guessed it a "white" audience. Same thing w/ the Jay'z shows, Too Short, and every other hip hop show I've seen in the last 15 yrs. BTW I am Hispanic. So not all their fans are "white" there are a few "brown" fans out there too.

yea, thats how my friends parents felt about letting them go to MSG. so, we got stuck with 2 extra tickets (can you believe 17th row floor seats cost $17.50 back in 1987?) so my friend's mother and younger brother had to come.
It was a wild scene. I almost got my beastie boys tour guide stolen that night!

Hey I am a white guy from Norway and I have no idea how many black vs whites listenes to the Beasties. One thing I know however is I personally am not that much into rap music but I love the beastie boys and its been like that for years. When I think of the beastie boys I dont even think about rap - in my oppinion they have made their own genre. I think they are a hardcore band with beats backing them up instead of realintruments (when they are not actually using real instruments).
What Im trying to say is that its hard to compare the beastie boys fanbase to other rappers (black or white) when I dont really see them as all rap (by label I could agree that they are rap though..) I think that skinny ass hardcore kids like me have an easier time relating to the beastie boys than ohter rapgroups - hence maybe the large group of white alternative kids?!?
I dont relate to rappers I only relate to the beastie boys!!

hip hop is universal now and its "pop". Once your pop, everyone knows you and all races, religions or creeds will like you. (well, most will).
but if you notice the top 5 song on billboard last week, hip hop was no present which means it may be losing its grip on the charts and in the minds of fans.

'cause the media tells the black community to listen to the thugz and the homiez
You can't say shit like that. Intentional or not, that's racist.
You may aswell have said:
"Black people are stupid so when the media tells them they should only listen to black people, they do lol!"

Just because that's what they're told doesn't mean they listen. And racist or not, he can say it if he wants. He shouldn't, but he can.
