As CBGB's was closing one of the last acts to play there was Bad Brains and Yauch was there to check them out. They started reminiscing the old days and one thing (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003348479) lead to another... What? I thought the Beatsie Boys were supposed to be all conscious and stuff these days. Why would they want to work with a band (or at least HR?) that is unapologetic about their homophobia?
What a let-down. I kinda admired their convictions.

Truth. HR's nuts. Plus, have you heard some of those later records (read: *most* of their albums)? Oh my...
But still, *I* care what he says...as a kid (well, I guess I'm an adult now) who's socially active and grew up in love with progressive music like punk and rap and such. I'm not a Beastie Boys fanatic or purist at all (sorry), and obviously I have no claim over what they do, so I'm not going to throw a big fit...but it's a bummer when you think someone's cool and on top of it, then they go and support someone who's known to be a hardcore bigot. It just says what is and isn't important to Yauch and I'm letdown that he's not willing to stand up for the homos like he does some other groups.
I grew up running around with skinheads (I was more mod, no fears) and I realized I couldn't get behind a couple of my friends when they started leaning toward racist. My best friend, even. I guess I just want the world to be about their convictions 100%. You know...like me. ;)

Bad Brains were a real good band. My favorite album of theirs has to be "I Against I." I still listen to it today. As for the homophobia stuff, yes they did put out that song "Don't Blow Bubbles" (I think that was the name). "Allegedly" they used to believe AIDS was a punishment for homosexuals (I read this in an article somewhere). However, all of this was going down in the late 80s, and we're now 20 years in the future. I'm not sure what they truly believe now, but many Jamaicans and Rastas believe homosexuality is wrong.
Anyway, I'm glad to see them making a comeback with Yauch! Exciting stuff!

I'm not familiar at all with Bad Brains or HR at all and their homophobia. What have they said recently that makes the homophobes? How do you know they still are unapologetic?
Just curious.

I saw an interview in some punk magazine (HeartattaCk, maybe?) a few years back (like 2001 or 2002) and they still stood by their claim that homosexuality was 'wrong.' I guess a bunch of other DC folks spoke their mind about it and HR said something about trying to get past it, but he couldn't.
Many Jamaicans and rastas are also down with homos and/or are homos themselves. That's a lame excuse. A lot of Americans hate gays...don't make it ok.
I'm lucky because I never really fell in love with the Bad Brains in the first place. So, it's easy for me to say fuck them. And I do. ;)

'Don't Blow Bubbles' was their big gay-bashing song and they've been known to make comments at shows and in the press. It's been a big issue in punk communities.

Gotcha, but do they still feel that way? I mean LTI was going to be called Don't Be A Faggot.

Like I was telling the other dude, they did as of 2001/2002 or whenever I read that article. I forgot about 'Don't Be a Faggot.' But at least the Beastie Boys supposedly grew up and denounced it. Sort of. Actually...did they ever address that specifically? All I've heard from the Bad Brains is they keep on perpetuating the same shit.
People can change and it can be cool. But the Bad Brains have a long history of homophobia (it precedes 'Don't Blow Bubbles') up until at least five years ago...and they just kept excusing and justifying it.

I'm currently listening to the Paying for Cum... Bad Brains are still awesome! They had their downs and failures already, more than enough, I'm curious about whether they gonna get some serious air time on MTV...
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at HR's antics... :(
