I know it may sound lame, but i canīt talk from this to anyone, & thought that the beasties fan would be the ones that could understand me the most.

I went yesterday to see the Beasties down the BUE festival in Buenos Aires... i couldnīt sleep like the the hole week because of it...
I was there in the crowd waitig for the beasties...patti smith and elephant were before, but iīll managed to keep my place till the beasties, but not for long... they started with SHURE SHOT, (my favourite song!).. and things got complicated, i just couldnt breath... 4 songs later i was out of my place... i donīt know if this happens in like any country... people i argentina get verrrrrry exited when they see a band... and forget how to treat the person they have aside (i was reeeeaaly mistreated)
What bothers me the most is that the mayority of the people that was in the front didnīt even know the beasties... when a girl that was fan of patti asked me if she could be in front of me i said, ok! but let me the place when the beasties come!, and she did... but all the others were unrestrained!.. i felt really bad.
I could never come back :( ... and see the beasties as i wished for ssssssoooooo long...and as i did when they started Shure Shot...i also got my camera stolen so no pictures for me :( (n) ...
What was suppoded to be like one of the best experiences ever for me, it ended the other way. An NOT because of the Beasties that were always concerned about the crowd safety. It was because of uncivilazed argentinian crowd!!!
Whether it sound lame or not.. i feel really sad today... because i was expecting to have great memories of the show.
Hope they come soon... if not, i will have to go to live to NY (is is there where they play the most) hehehehe
BEASTIES SOUNDED AWEEEESSSOOOMMME THOUG!!!
i can remember that as a happy thing...

Sorry if i made it long, i just had to express this, sorry.

PLEASE IF ANYONE GETS ANY PICTURE FROM ARGENTINIAN SHOW... SEND IT !!! OR POST IT :) ... iīm searching for them in the press media here, but found nothing so far.

Good Life out there...

Well..a similar thing happened to me & AndILoveMike near a month ago.... we went in Rome to see yauch apeearence to the first official italian shootin' of AIFST...we waited there next to the red carpet. When I saw him arrive (luckly I am tall enough and I succeeded to see him arriving) I shouted to AndIlOveMike "Hey There He IS!!!" ppl started askin "who? who?" and I tried to explain but no one semed to know him, and I asked if they would have left me stay in front of them just to take a few pics....but they answered "NO WAY! WE HAVE BEEN WAITIN' AS YOU DID!".. the logical question at this point was "Waited....for who??????"
Luckly I found a tiny Woman that left me stay in front of her :p
Anyway some ppl sometimes is so ... not educated... I'm sorry to hear that you have you own camera stolen...what a pity...anyway make your best to remember just the nice/good emotions that the Beastie Boys gave to you! Not else! :D

things sometimes never go right, especially when the beasties are involved.

my story, Lalapoolza, 1994, randals island. The beasties were doing a 2 day event. the day I was going happened to be Yauchs b-day so I made these graffiti'd "happy birthday Yauch" sign.

well, that day....it RAINED! ALL DAY! I cleverly used my sign as an umbrella, leaving the text "face down" as to not ruin the design.

so, several hours later when the rain finally stopped, I made my way to the front and when Mike and Adrock announced it was Yauch's b-day, I proudly sprung up my sign and just as it was standing high about my head for exactly 1 second, some asshole surfed over my head and tore my sign in "2"!!!

I yelled "YOU FUCKIN ASSHOLE" & gave the guy a "guido pump" right to his gut. The guy came tumbling down as he was thrown over the security gate, wondering who did it.

on a side note, I bought some weed with me to the concert and when my friends were all bumed out because of the rain and the mud all over the place, I pulled out a couple of joints. they were all happy because I saved the day!

I felt like "booger" in Revenge of the Nerds as he pulled out his wonder joints!

 Yeah, sometime people suck ass.... Especially drunk FRATT boys who dont deserve to be at a concert in the first place.....

My bad experience was at "Tibetten Freedom Festival"... It was the second LONG day, and was verry excited to see them.. The show was great.. I was trying to leave when some stupid drunk FRATT dick accused me of touching his ass... I told him to bug off, but instead was surronded by his buddies... So after seeing a great performance by the boys, I had to fight my way out of the crowd.... That experiance has turned me off completely to verry large crowded festivals... Oh and my Girl at the time just had to watch as these PUNKS tried to beat the shit out of me.... Oh well...

Festivals are not a good way to see bands you love. They're a good way to see bands that you are mildly interested in.

I disliked BDO Sydney because everyone near me was either talking or drunk. There were some good acts on smaller stages and I saw them instead of standing through all the crap on the main stage to get up front for Beasties. I knew I'd be seeing the sideshows so I didn't care very much. The BDO show looks much more fun on the video than it was in real life. :)

I understand why festivals are necessary for bands but I haven't been to one since BDO. For one thing, I'm too old for porta potties. :p

I'm so sorry for EriNNa and Beastiegirl18 getting such bad experiences at the gig. Sometimes it's like hell being at the front.
I remember when Radiohead played at Roskilde (1997) I was at the barrier in the middle and people were towering all over me. The security wanted to pull me away (sometimes it was rather hard to breathe), but I thought if I'm gonna go now at least I'd go happy... Unfortunately at that same festival a few years later 9 people died during Pearl Jam because of people crushing and trying to get forward... :(

Its actually pretty standard for crowds to get like that at Beasties shows. I think it was even worse back in 94-95 when "moshing" was supposed to be the cool thing to do and a lot of people never really got it so they tried to hurt people. So not only did you have everyone pushing forward from the back, but you also had these fools actively trying to hurt people as soon as the show started and 250 idoits kicking you in the head with hiking boots because they want to "crowd surf". You also have this really dangerous sexual assault threat for females, that was highlighted by the incidents at Woodstock 2000 (what a joke). It just got out of control.

The Beasties seem actively aware of these issues and have done more than most bands to try to settle people down, they do the "take 3 steps back" routine, and try to make sure everyone is having a good time. But some of it is truely out of their hands.

They Beasites also tend to cause a lot of havoc by keeping people waiting so long before they come out. I don't know if they do this on purpose or not (to build tension), it might be totally out of their control, but it used to be that they'd wait some extraordinary amount of time before going on. At a show like Lollapalooza, it would be 30-45 minutes before a band came on and for the Beasties it would be like an hour and a half. In their defense it might be the amount of equipment, but it always seemed like they did it to build crowd anticipation. As it gets closer to showtime, and then past showtime, people would keep packing in and moving forward (packed like sardines in a can). Its hard to explain how crushing it can get down there. I'm medium build person and I've always been okay although there have been times when everyone's packed so tight your lungs get pushed in and its hard to breath because you can't expand your lungs. Its that tight! I'd hate to be a small person stuck in that siutation. The whole crowd will swell and move and its hard to keep your footing when that happens. It gets tighter and tighter the closer it gets to showtime because more people are pushing to get to the front and there's no space. As soon as the Beasties come on everyone immediately pushes for space and it gets kind of dangerous up front. When you add the crowd surfing and moshing it makes it even worse. It can be really fun, or really scary, depending on what your expectations are and how big you are. I used to like being in all that way back when, now I try to get good seats so I don't have to deal with a bunch of sweaty dudes, haha.

It sucks that you have some fans up front waiting to see the Beasties for the first time and they just aren't ready for the physical difficulty of being in that spot. If you haven't been up front at a Beastie show before you just don't know what to expect and that can put you in a situation where you can get seriously hurt. I'm surprised more people don't die in these situations because you can easily see someone getting trampled. Usually people will try to help if they see someone fall but sometimes its just this retarded mob mentality and people do stupid shit.

Overall this type of stuff seems to have gotten better as the moshing trend has died, or maybe its just that I don't go up front as often anymore. The fact that the Beasties address the crowd issues (they even had a "how to dance safe" flyer on the quadrophonic tour) is encouraging. At the same time it would be cool if they figured out a way to ease some of the pre-show tension because its the moments right before they go on and the first couple of songs where things are the worst.

^^During the 95 Quadrophonic tour the Beasties had an unusual rail devised that kind of split the floor area (would be mosh pit area) into two areas to minimize the pits. And in the Tourzine they had an article asking the crowd to not mosh.

Here is the what the Beasties Boys said in the Official Tourzine from the Quadrophonic Tour in 1995.

EMERGENCY LIFESAVING TECHNIQUES - Mosh Pit Don't and Do's Presented by the Beastie Boys
DON'TS
1. Don't Elbow, Kick, Punch, Thrash, Smash, Skank...or do any other dance that can only be performed at the expense of others. Respect all peoples, not just yourself!

2. Don't Float! Unless you're a certified waif* AND, as Bikini Kill fanzine reminds us, "Don't think that 'cuz you are in the pit that you can get away with grabbing girls' breasts or putting your hands down their pants or undoing their bras, etc., etc. A girl has as much right to mosh as anyone else and just 'cus she's slamming up against you doesn't mean she is in LOVE with you."

3. Don't Encourage Floating! Don't offer potenetial moshers a stirrup -- you're not a horse! Floating also leads to being passed over the barricade, which usually involves injury, ejection or humiliation at the hands of the authorities.

4. Don't Kick Up Dirt! Or tomorrow morning you'll have black boogers --plus it's wack! (This rule may not apply at arena shows but follow it anyway.)

5. Don't Taunt Security! They're only doing their job, so why don't you do the same and act like a homo sapien!

6. In Short, Don't Be A Knucklehead! Just because you're a jock, ex-jock, or would-be-jock doesn't mean that this is just another game. Save the macho bullshit for American Gladiators tryouts, tough guy.

DO'S
1. Do Help People When They Scream "HELP!" Or Fall Down! Don't just stand there grinning like an idiot! Take charge of a bad situation, tell people to mellow out and help the disadvantaged party to their feet. Be Pro-Active --and not just in the pit! Don't let hassles happen anywhere on the premises. If you want hassles, take it to the Marines.

2. Do Something Constructive With Your Time & Life! Be creative within your own space. Don't infringe on other people's right to enjoy themselves. When the band starts to play, don't act like your mom's at a K-Mart sale and stampede the joint. Do yourself a favor and learn how to really dance a real dance step... A) Pogo B) Go-Go C) Smurf D) Breakdance E) All of the above.

The Beasties were definitely into moshing during the CYH tour of 1992. It was absolute chaos at those shows.

Hey M, I know you kinda expected the rough crowd and stuff. But, if you had to do it over again would you have held the rail, or was there a better/safer spot you would have chosen?

Was the venue in a big open field? Or a stadium with seats?

I had some dude piss on my leg at a BBoy show in Dallas back in '95. It was right before they came out and the lights went down and some crazy drunk asshole whipped it out and started pissing right in the middle of the floor! Eveyone around us felt it on their leg and was like WTF! Needless to say whoever this guy was (I'm hoping it was a guy) got away with it. Anyway the show was still fuckin kickass but it still sucked.

I hate the scum who think that just because a band or performer is popular then they should go to said performers concert, get drunk, and fight their way to the front.

At a mixmaster show a month or two ago, Susan and I had secured spots near the front, and we were surrounded by people that seemed very cool to just nod their heads and enjoy the various line-up of turntablists. As soon as mike came out, drunk and drugged up arseholes started thrashing forward and pushed everyone out.

Some dumbfuck who was elbowing me in the kidney the whole time, spat on the back of my neck and said "sorry". So I elbowed him in the face and said "sorry" back.

Also, security can be luck of the draw. The security guards at some venues seem to be content with looking macho and telling people to "fuck off", rather than try to break up fights or get people to stop crushing others.
