View Full Version : let's lynch the landlord
so my downstairs neighbors' ceiling collapsed because apparently water is leaking from our shower pipes, or something, i dunno, the point is, i can't use the shower until it gets fixed. and our landlord (management company actually, which is like a landlord with a bureaucracy) is absolutely horrible about maintenance. in fact, they're actually getting sued over it.
so i have no idea how long it's gonna be before i can bathe again. this is gonna be unpleasant
it's not a bad apartment, it's not like i'm up to my knees in roaches or anything, in fact i haven't even seen a bug since i've moved in, it's just that the owners are so negligent. it's a shame, i really like this place, i like the price, i love the location, i love the room, i really hope it doesn't get condemned or anything.
i dunno what i'm gonna do about this shower thing though. i wish i'd made some friends, maybe they'd let me use theirs. there's gonna be some pret-ty skanky bob hair by the end of this week i imagine

i was thinking sponge bath, yeah
serious though, i'm drunk right now and i'm not too concerned but i dunno what i'm gonna do about this. this company SUCKS, they refuse to fix things, and i can't bathe until they do. i'm about to develop such a stank, this is not what i need in life right now

In Australia, in this case, you can sue (well seek compensation) your landlord/body corporate whoever manages your building for compensation in these circumstances if it is not fixed within a reasonable amount of time, and furthermore if their lackof maintenance caused the issue because it had been previously been reported you don't even have to wait the 'reasonable amount of time'.
IF it's true what they say that you can sue for anything in U.S.A I'm sure you can do that there too.
Why am I telling you this, you're the one doing law.

ha
i should do some research, but i've already got this research assignment and it's boring enough
but like i said, they're apparently already being sued for not maintaining the property, so i don't know that it would help. i don't even care about money or whatever right now, immediately, my only interest is in taking a goddamn shower.
i will update you as this story develops.
i really dunno what's going to happen now, i'm drunk and i'm sort of forgetting the issue but in the back of my head i know, i'm not gonna be able to bathe for like a month, that's fuckin gross

Bob - when you are sober again, go talk to your bank about setting up an escrow account for your rent. You shouldn't be paying rent to them if they are not maintaing a habitable property. But, you do need to be able to show that you can pay the rent, but that you are refusing to until the problem(s) is rectified. So if this is not fixed (really fixed, not "this band-aid will hold it" fixed) by the next time your rent is due, you pay it into the escrow account and notify your landlord that you have done so. This way you cannot be evicted for nonpayment, because technically you have paid conditionally. If you are tight with your neighbours, they can pay into this account as well, and all the money will be held in escrow until such time as the property is suitably repaired.

actually, we haven't paid rent for 3 months over it (not this particular incident but just generally the negligence issue). i'm not too sure about the details...actually, i should reeeealllly look into those details, they might be important.

About 6 years ago my shower was fucked. I used to take 'Whore's Baths'. It was a great opportunity to tell people I was taking 'Whore's Baths', and it still is a great opportunity to tell people I took 'Whore's Baths'.

What's a whore bath?
Washing your genitals with a washcloth and using only a basin. Popularised by Victorian-era prostitutes on particularly busy nights. I like the expression so, so much.

is there nowhere else you can have a shower?
eg. if i couldn't shower my options would be
go to the city to use the pay showers
go to the local pool and use the showers there
go to my parents
go to a friends
surely there's gotta be a shower somewhere?
backpackers?
i'm not aware of any public showers
my family lives in connecticut
i know someone who's in my class who lives down the street but i'm not sure i'm friends with her such that she'd be willing to let me come to her house every morning to bathe and be naked in her house
i dunno, i'm gonna see how long this lasts, and then, i'll ask her because you can only be so greasy for so long

actually, when ms. peachy metioned the YMCA, i realized, as a student of the university, i have access to the gym and i can use their showers
so i guess if it comes down to it, that's what i'll do but i dunno, standing naked and wet in a room with a bunch of wet naked men i dunno sounds kinda gay

back when i was in a team, i used to shower in the gym showers. those are always interesting experiences, trying to wash yourself in front of other people...
ok, so i've decided i'm just going to shower in the gym in the mornings until this gets settled. in a way it'll be good, maybe i'll start exercising. i'll get up, go to the gym, maybe do a lap around the track (just so i'm not some extremely creepy guy who goes to the gym and goes straight for the showers), shower, and start the day...
one question though, and it's dumb, but i feel like i should know: you ARE supposed to be nude in there, right? i don't wanna go, only to have someone walk in wearing a bathing suit and go "why the fuck are you naked?" or something. i've never showered at a gym before, i've always avoided it. do people generally bring soap and shampoo and stuff to the gym? or is it usually just a quick rinse-off? will i look weird if i'm working up a lather or something? i have no other choice really, it's the only place i can do it, but i don't want to look weird.

in my experience, people usually bring at least soap and shampoo and all to the showers. you won't get odd looks if you bring all your toiletries - a lot of people have their morning routines at a gym after working out, and then they go to work. most of the time a good gym will have soap dispensers there for you but it's always really cheap, awful stuff. so bring your own. and bring good flip-flops. you don't want your feet touching that floor. and yes, you shower naked.

yeah, when I used to go to the gym more often you do shower naked. bring a little thing to keep your soap and stuff in and wear good flip flops.
to avoid awkwardness, have a "I'm busy and don't have alot of time to take a shower" look on your face. The creepy old dudes won't notice you then.
put a towel onright afterwards though. don't be one of those gross dudes that walks around the locker room nekkid. those guys smell like Taco Bell.

One thing to this day I've never mastered as a social grace: in the company of others, can you vigourously scrub your ass? It's one thing to clean, another entirely to simply moisten day-old dingleberries. I hope there's doors on bobs showers.
well, it's a university gym, you need to be a student (or i guess faculty) to get in...i suspect there will be a minimal amount of creepy old men. only athletic college students for me to feel inadequate next to (and NO i don't mean that in the way that you think i mean that, i just mean in general terms of physique)
i don't think there are doors but it's hard to tell
here, if you feel like downloading a 45 meg file, you can take a video tour of the place

they don't show the showers for very long but it looks like it's just an open air affair

Since I've been here in the US, I've been showering most days at the Y. I drop the baby off at the nursery, then I have some exercise, and then I shower. It's all communal. Of course I'm not a guy so I don't know 'male locker room ettiquette', but none of the women where I go seem especially modest. Just get in there and do your stuff, dude.
