i've started watching this show again on hulu and goddamn it's funny.

one thing i love about it has how many genuinely horrible, horrible things happen in every episode and yet they manage to make it funny without being lame about it. like i just watched the 2-parter where they accidentally steal coke from the mafia and when you think about what actually happens in the plot there's really nothing to laugh about - they steal drugs from the mob and then the mob threatens to kill them and in order to pay off the debt they sell drugs, frank turns his son into a prostitute, dee and charlie trick rickety cricket into becoming a drug dealer/addict and then when the mob comes to kill them they get out of it by getting rickety cricket's legs broken

but it's all funny

i think "it's seinfeld on crack" is the worst tagline for the best show i've ever seen

Drederick: I think you would enjoy the first two seasons if you gave them a try. I actually liked them the most, before Danny Devito became a regular member of 'the gang' He's not as funny, to me, as the others.

Not to be a crabby-pants or a bossy-butt or anything, but just to save myself the repeated embarrassment of this, I wish people would announce in the body of their post that they are bumping an old thread. I'm just not in the practice of checking the dates. If it's at the top, I always assume it's brand new. I guess that's just the nature of this place; rapid thread turnover.

As long as we're talking about the show though; Isn't Charlie an incredibly complex character? He's got such a blend of deviousness, violence, rage, and innocent hope at the same time. All at once he can be the victim and the aggressor of a situation.

He wants love but he's creepy. He's always sweating and apparently smells bad. He's illiterate, easily excitable, has learned over the years to make his own clothes and to steal them. He drinks a lot- of course, they all do. What else do we know about Charlie?

"I got the good lord going DOWN on me!"

Not to take away from Mac. He's probably second in fascination. He seems to have high morals and religious principles in an abstract kind of way while in practice he just succumbs to baser instincts. But I like how hopeful he is, how he seems to want to be a great success at things, like TV reporting, or connecting with people. At least he plans things out, like putting in time with the hot tranny so that when he has her sex change, he'll be right in prime position.

Mac is my favorite for the reasons listed above. He seems to be blissfully unaware that his lifestyle is cynical and you get the impression that he's really a hopeful, optimistic kind of dude.

This show is so unlike Seinfeld in all kinds of key elements. Just because they're a bunch of jerks we love, that's not enough to call it a version of Seinfeld.

The thing with Seinfeld was that those people really seemed like grown-ups. Even though they were immature and never seemed to learn anything or get life right, they still seemed to have mastered a certain sophistication. They blundered through dating and jobs, yes, but in a world a few steps higher than Philly. They were aware of who they were, they had moments of luxury and class, and seemed to be sincerely trying to figure things out. Most importantly, the main thing about Seinfeld was the dissecting and analyzing of the minutia of daily life. That was the whole show, the Jerry Seinfeld "did you ever notice..." type of comedy.

On Philly, these people are dirty children having adventures. They don't just blunder through dating and jobs, they blunder through grasping even the concept of dating and jobs. There's no class or luxury in their lives and they're not trying to figure things out. The moment they have an idea, they think...no, they KNOW they've got it figured out. There's no self-awareness or introspection, no admission of uncertainty, and there certainly isn't a single attempt at an examination of the minutia of daily life.

I know! He actually thinks he's smarter and better and more deserving than the others. He seems to think there's some injustice in his life.

Funny, I never got the impression from the Seinfeld cast that they were genuine in any way. I always just thought they were self-absorbed to the exclusion of being self-aware. Couldn't see beyond their own noses so to speak. I never really liked the show.

You're right, they thought highly of themselves, even when they were cynical, like George. But they genuinely seemed to want to get things right in life. Or they thought they were reasonable about doing it. I don't know, I'm not explaining it very well I guess. I just sense that there were some really big differences in the whole premise of the show.

annnd you retarded.

if you dont like seinfeld....egads man.

but onto the seinfeld v. sunny comparison.

i see it.

the 1 girl. 3 guys. the 1 main guy who gets the girls. the 1 guy who is the odd ball. then the other buddy.

and the "on crack" reference fits. they are devious like the seinfeld characters are, just way way worse. the characters of both shows are always scheming on something. the characters on both shows are all so lovable in their own way.

This is very good analysis. I'm very impressed (and frankly a little jealous...)

This show almost killed me the first time I watched it as I was laughing so hard I couldn't inhale and I couldn't make my body stop laughing to breathe. I saw stars and the world went all white at the edges and I was probably fractions of a second from blacking out. True story...
