...this weekend was an odd one for hearing remakes in the air. I heard both in... where was I? It wasn't the movie theater... was it the dentist's office?

I dunno.

But I heard, on the radio, some lady covering Journey's "Open Arms" (at least that one made listen-to-MY-pipes kinda show-offy sense) and somebody else covering Big Country's "In a Big Country." Sounded like a kind of gentler Bono singing it or something.

Weird. I mean, no reason why not -- "In a Big Country" is actually a good song -- but it was a little jolting.

Any covers out there that have surprised you lately?

"I didn't think they'd try it on..." :)

(!) Veering off topic, when I was in Berlin last month I switched on MTV in the hotel and was absolutely horrified to be watching some horrible guy absolutely butchering 'Stand by Me' with a dozen girls grinding away in leather bikinis and draped over cars in the background. It was very upsetting.

terrible first time round. Even worse when 'remixed' by dubious (probably european) act called Meck.

That Lovesong cover by 311 was horrendous

I would have said no one should be allowed to remake "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, but a few years ago there was a very decent version on the radio. I should find that...

The other day I heard a cover of Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi's Dead, sung by some female. It was surprisingly good.

I hate to be the one pointing this out but...

I never thought anyone would cover "My Prerogative." Just sayin.

Oh man, I think you heard the Dashboard Confessional cover of Big Country. It is shit.
