My mother has macular degeneration. She cannot see people's faces and it is very difficult for her to read or watch television. She is, for all intents and purposes, legally blind. She can only see peripherally in her left eye and her vision is blocked in that eye due to macular degeneration. Basically, a large black spot blocks the vision in her left eye. Her right eye is very hazy and causes her vision to be non-existant other than side to side in her left eye.
Today, she had a very risky operation to remove the lens in her right eye. The risk was being totally blind in her eye. The cataracts were removed and the lens on her pupil was replaced with a new lens. The doctor believed that it would take some recovery time to evaluate the results of the surgery. Miraculously she came out of surgery able to see people's faces and read signs without her glasses or contacts. She is very excited because now she can see her grandchildren instead of blurry figures. She can now watch television, read books and look at photographs. Her eyesight has been a heavy burden on her life and she now feels like a ton of weight has been lifted off her shoulders. Her next goal is to have the cataracts removed in her left eye although it will not solve the problem of the macular degeneration. The results of her surgery could not have been better and have drastically improved her quality of life.
I am sure now that she can see more clearly the divorce papers will be filed to my father. The years have wrinkled his face and she may want to find a younger man. Ha!

I am very excited. Her voice on the phone was quivering with excitement. She was talking and saying things like----I can see that sign----look at that cloud. Good vision is taken for granted until you have to hold your mother's arm when walking and describe photographs and other details. We really thought she would be totally blind in a couple of years. It is amazing what doctors can do. Now she can see my little man.

That's pretty amazing. I can't even imagine such a fundamental, taken-for-granted aspect of life being restored. Good for her. (y)

She was very worried. She is a devout christian that trys to get her son (me) to pray and go to church. Of course, I am a heathen of great proportions. She told me last night that it was in God's hands. I am more of a realist and think the doctor did all the work. Call me a cynic......or jerk. Whatever.
My younger brother is about to enter theological studies to become a minister. He is quitting a six figure job to pursue his calling. I can't complain because he wants to move his family to Texas because he is tired of Washington DC beltway traffic. Anyway, back to the subject.
Her friend had the same surgery and it did not work. She lost her vision in both eyes. I guess my mother's prayers were answered. She always puts me on her prayer chains at church and things work out fine for me. Maybe, I should become a believer or at least less of a cynic.

"God's will" is a pretty tricky thing to speculate about. Plenty of times, the answer is "no."

I think it strikes a person pretty square in their spirit when something supernatural really was involved, though. There's an unshakable "I just know" that the person can't disregard. If you're a cynic, I think you're kind of stuck with that until something changes your mind.

It's hard to be cyncial and yet not stubborn.
