My mother has macular degeneration. She cannot see people's faces and it is very difficult for her to read or watch television. She is, for all intents and purposes, legally blind. She can only see peripherally in her left eye and her vision is blocked in that eye due to macular degeneration. Basically, a large black spot blocks the vision in her left eye. Her right eye is very hazy and causes her vision to be non-existant other than side to side in her left eye.
Today, she had a very risky operation to remove the lens in her right eye. The risk was being totally blind in her eye. The cataracts were removed and the lens on her pupil was replaced with a new lens. The doctor believed that it would take some recovery time to evaluate the results of the surgery. Miraculously she came out of surgery able to see people's faces and read signs without her glasses or contacts. She is very excited because now she can see her grandchildren instead of blurry figures. She can now watch television, read books and look at photographs. Her eyesight has been a heavy burden on her life and she now feels like a ton of weight has been lifted off her shoulders. Her next goal is to have the cataracts removed in her left eye although it will not solve the problem of the macular degeneration. The results of her surgery could not have been better and have drastically improved her quality of life.
I am sure now that she can see more clearly the divorce papers will be filed to my father. The years have wrinkled his face and she may want to find a younger man. Ha!
