I saw J5 last week and although I loved the show, soooo damned funky(bass in ya face!)I found them to be a little flat without Cut Chemist....it was a great show, but if you saw J6 you likely know what I mean....I'm wondering if the split was amicable?
2 nice radio shows for the takin'

boring? Flame on?....I guess if you find the foundations of the genre to be flat....no one drops dubs or samples as solid in old skool repoire, rhythms and rhymes,as they do/can,silly wabbit.

yeah I realize its cool to talk about how "ive been down with hip hop since 1983" and reference Busy Bee and Grandmaster Flash and all this crap but in reality a lot of the early rap was corny as fuck and nine times out of ten 50% of the verses consisted of the MCs talking about how good they are at rapping or how good their DJ is.
Jurassic 5 is even worse than that. Its like, some Pras sounding dork with his Barbershop Quartet backup singing the chorus rapping about absolutely nothing disguised as a "throwback to old school" because its boring and non threatening.

Actually I hear some of what your saying, but the Pras comparrison is weak!Tuna Fish anyday....and so much of the old school rap was exactly as you described,Grand Master Flash is one of the worst live performers I've ever seen....I find the new record to take a "club friendly" aproach which I dislike in relation to the 1st 2 records...I disagree wholeheartedly that they're disguised as anything.....what's threatening to you?Praising catching bullets, preaching unattainable lifestyles ala Fifty or the Game or encouraging the kidz to read, write and express themselves....and fuck if you ever heard the Dec 8th radio show you'll know why Kool Moe Dee Vs Busy Bee is so damned dope....."It's the place to be"

how was it corny as fuck ? Some it might sound corny now but a lot has happened in (recorded) hip hop in the last 27 years so of course stuff from back then will sound a little dated now. Corny at the time of release ? Don't be ridiculous. You weren't listening to these records at the time so you don't have any real time perspective.

irrelevant. Thats like saying we should still listen to Glen Miller because at the time the music was popular.

I still like J5 but I don't like how their latest album was a blatant attempt to be more mainstream.
regardless of if the Dave Matthews collabo works, it's still weak.

of course it's relevant. I'm not saying you have to listen to anything at all. I disagree with your point that hip hop was corny in the beginning, and i'm making the point that you are judging it against everything that you've listened to since, so obviously the music will sound dated. Production techniques have improved, lyricism has improved (well, in some areas) etc etc. Times have changed but without the original innovators you wouldn't have hip hop as it is now, and as a hip hop fan you should respect that.
I personally don't dig rock & roll, well except for little richard and a few others but as understand how important that music was, and without that most of the music i love now wouldn't have been made

I'm down with MC Corny cause musicians that take themselves serious is ridiculous.
