Let's look at the phenomenon of 'Politicking'. So, to use athletes who get in their coaches ears to serve their own ends; one definition has politicking as activities within your job, extraneous to your work, that will benefit your goals within the position.
Many misconstrue it as ass-kissing, and while it is true that often one's success is at the expense of another, it is also indicative of the kill or be killed nature of many modern workplaces.
In an example not necessarily tied to the workplace, it can be seen as relationships which are ultimately of benefit in some shape or another, being maintained in the hope of said benefit coming to fruition. You may maintain ties with somebody simply because contact with them increases chances of a pay-off in the future.
I have talked about people behind their backs at work, and to this day maintain relationships which are as viable as the options they present. If I'm missing the point of what politicking is by nature, then please chime in. I'm keen to learn.
