I was just talking to my old roommate Gay Sean the other day. He's moving there in January. I'm going to visit and see if I like it. I'm scared though. I mean I'm a city boy but man that is THE city

I don't know about you, but for me, the first time I went was a little overwhelming; second time was GREAT and I was much more at ease. (y)

My first time was just...awesome. I was comfortable very quickly. Of course that was only a few days so obviously I can't make a choice just based on that. I don't know...I know a good handfull of people there, the film industry makes Utah look like a peanut, and there's so much good comedy around there. I actually feel a strange twinge in my heart about all the amazing comedy shows I hear about that I can't go to...is that weird? I don't know.

Yes, I've thought about all of that and the big answer is - I have no idea.
I love my boyfriend, more than I ever though I could love somebody, but he would never move to a place like New York.

Sorry Mute I don't do cumquats...
You saw what happened to Joe Buck. When you succumb to the living breathing beast that is New York City......you don't want to be riding a bus to South Florida and have Ratso Rizzo pee on your leg.....do you?

Not bad. I think you've been to NYC more times in the past 3 years than I have, and I live 45 minutes away.

It's the kind of thing that you should do when you're young if you're ever going to do it. It's easier to be flat broke when you're young. It's easier to live with roommates when you're young. When you're older it's hard to give up the creature comforts. It seems that everyone of a certain age who visits NYC for the first time wants to move there. I've got a family member going through that now because she's an artist.
If you move there, promise yourself that you'll live on what you make or you will leave. Don't be one of those women who racks up $100,000 in credit card debt and has to move back home. (I always think of this article in the New Yorker about a woman from the midwest who got a job in Manhattan as an editor and couldn't live on her salary.)
You should also be aware that sometimes the city smells of sewage. You were there during one of the best months of the year for a visit--so I suggest another visit or two. :p

yeah if I was going to move to the NY area I would seek out NJ for housing...otherwise you're gonna pay $600+ for a shoebox sized studio in Queens or Brooklyn or the Bronx. One of my sisters friends lives in Manhattan for some reason and her rent is around $1100 for an apartment the size of my closet.
I like Minneapolis, but if i was going to relocate it would be Chicago.

new jersey smells bad.
like i told heiress, move to new york and we can all live together in a big geeky house, and we can live in harlem and be protected. i truly believe that.

Thanks for the advice peoples...definetly a lot of stuff to think about. If I moved there there's no wayyy I'd live in Manhattan, hahs. Anyway I'd have to visit a few more times like you said Doc.
Anyway, there's a lot of other shit I want to do too and I feel like I have to just choose one. I've thought about doing the teaching english thing in South America because I loved it there...but you don't get paid shit there. If you do the Japanese route like my friend is right now, you make bank. Hrmph.
There's a billion things!! ahhhh!

Ha! You're not even allowed to live on the street for $600 a month in Manhattan.
Expect to pay a least a 800 a month if you plan on living anywhere within an hour of Manhattan.
And that's with a roommate.

do what you want and find a way to make it happen...
I have lived in the East Village, Spanish Harlem, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and Washington Heights and I have never paid more than $650 for my share of rent... yes that is with roommates and I have lived in 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartments...
no broker fees, no bullshit... there are good deals out there for apartments in Manhattan... you just have to realize you're not going to be in a high rise building with a doorman and a laundry facility/gym
