What do you guys make of Chomsky?

He's not exactly the most exciting fella, but what he has to say is thought-provoking, to put it mildly.

There's lots of things I don't necessarily agree with, but he's got valid points.

It's pretty interesting how he's a world-renowned linguist, yet he's also esteemed as one of the big political activists of our time.

Anyways, here's a treat for you guys. Since you're all Rage Against The Machine fans, here's an interview of Chomsky by Zach de la Rocha. I'm not sure when this was done, but it probably was sometime in the 1990s...

Anarchism is flawed. I still respect and agree with anarchists.

Isn't he a libertarian socialist and a anarcho-syndicalist (whatever THAT means)?

Anarcho syndicalism is like anarchy for capitalists. I don't think chomsky is either of what you said. I could be wrong.

I haven't kept up to date with him, or really been very in depth - so I couldn't tell you what he exactly is.

I'm just tellin' ya what Wikipedia claims Noam Chomsky considers himself, so make of it what you will.

Either that or Stephen Colbert and his buddies had some fun with Chomsky's entry with their very own brand of "Wikiality"

Yeah, probably should have checked wikipedia.

EDIT: Yeah, and I was wrong about anarcho-syndicalism, too. It's apparantly more like anarchy run by the trade unions.

I guess I should check these things.

I'll certainly say this: he's an excellent debater and he clearly has an insane amount of knowledge about certain issues.

But I don't find the case for anarchism to be completely sensible. I still can't see why, fundamentally, no government is better than a properly run government. Of course one might say 'no government can be properly run', to which I could easily respond 'no non-government could be properly run either.'

There's no fundamental reason (that I see) that anarchism is better than just plain old good governance. I think most of the Marxist arguments based on class are cant. There certainly are some valid points to be made in leftist thought (namely the way physical relations fashion psychology), but still, none of this adds up, to me, to abolish the aperatti and start again.

There have been a few people talking about him lately and his old videos keep being suggested to me via netflix. What's the deal? Is there a book or movie driving the publicity?

Not that I'm aware of, he's just a popular fellow, I guess.
