View Full Version : The White Stripes vs. The Raconteurs?

Ok, which Jack White band do you prefer? Maybe this is premature (since there's only 1 Raconteurs album and we have to wait and see what they'll come up with next), but I'd love to hear your opinions.

I love both bands, but I'm gonna have to say The White Stripes take it so far. "DeStijl", "White Blood Cells," etc. all classics that still get to me.

this is tougher to say than I thought.

wait, no it isn't

WHITE STRIPES

and only because I think Brenden Benson's songwriting hurts the Raconteurs. His lyrics tend to be a little too obvious.

White Stripes easy. Raconteurs are boring.

It's kinda funny. My dad is dead-set on The Raconteurs being better. He's got a major beef with The White Stripes because they don't have a bass player (let alone the fact that they don't have another guitar player either), so he's all like: "Well, it's about time Jack White got himself a proper band."

the whole "no bass=sucks" defense is fucking worn out.

Wasn't Get Behind Me Satan recorded in like 2 weeks or some shit?

Two Weeks, Two People, No Computers. That album is a masterpiece.

My only beef with the Raconteurs album is all the songs (and the album overall) are over before they really get going. Like "Level" is so bad ass but way too short.

there are more people Id like to make out with in the raconteurs but the white stripes win musically

Is this a serious question?

Who's going to say The Raconteurs? I mean, other than a complete imbecile who knows absolutely nothing about music whatsoever.

I'm totally imbecille and voted for Raconteurs. Enjoyed their live gig more than any of the White Stripes gigs I've seen. Altho I do love White Stripes too, but at the moment Meg is pulling the shorter straw.

raconteurs are good, especially live, but it's gotta be the stripes.

If they started in the early '90s, rather than the late '90s, you know you'd be LOVING The White Stripes. :p

Stripes.

The Raconteurs gig is good stuff, but it kind of reigns Jack in too much, so he doesn't really get to freak out like he does with his own vehicle.

We'll see what happens with the Raconteurs, but, yeah -- I also think Brenden's songwriting has not so charming amateurness at times. But I dig that album a bunch.

I never liked the White Stripes till I saw them in concert. I haven't seen the Raconteurs yet. I was out of town when they played here.

I give Jack White credit for playing smaller venues when he doesn't have to.

I like "Broken Boy Soldiers" better than "Get Behind Me Satan." I dunno, I feel like Jack was kind of burned out on just straight making music by that album with the Stripes, and when he hooked up with the Raconteurs he was more interested in making a well rounded rock album without as much odd experimentation that sort of turned me off to GBMS.

If you can't at least appreciate The White Stripes you're probably either doing way too many drugs, need to start doing drugs or you're just an imbecile and more than likely humiliate your family on a frequent basis.

The White Stripes are really ill live, I will give them that. Overall, they're incredibly overrated. Get Behind Me Satan besides having a retarded album title, is utter fucking trash filled with self indulgent crap and the same minimalist approach that was interesting on their first two albums but got pretty tiring by Elephant.

Blue Orchid and Red Rain are on Get Behind Me Satan. Therefore that album can not be complete trash.

Wow, you ARE AussieBomb1999.

Anyways, there's a general consensus that "Elephant" was their best album. While it was classic (they're all classics), "White Blood Cells" is what stays very close to my heart. It feels like that one is underrated.

Isn't White Blood Cells their best selling one? I think the first album wasn't all that great. Everything between De Stijl and Elephant were BANGERZ, though.

I thought "Get Behind Me Satan" is the best selling one (or maybe it only had the best-selling debut on the charts?).

I'm more talking of critical acclaim than sales. At the time, "Elephant" was all "BEST WHITE STRIPES ALBUM EVER" but I'm standing by "White Blood Cells"

What's funny is people who think that The White Stripes are overrated. Rather than rejoice in the fact that a group that plays the kind of minimalist, non-commercial, straightforward rock music that they do, is bestowed with loving admiration by everyone from mainstreamers to hipsters to the media in general, detractors and HATERZ would rather whine about it. Why don't you direct your contempt towards bands like My Chemical Fallout Plan which not only lack talent and originality but deserve constant ridicule and to be shot at with guns and missiles and harpoons and whatnot?

I agree, but I haven't seen this thread littered with HATERZ. Aside from Cosmo, aren't most people in this thread generally okay with the band?

i never said i wasn't okay with the band! i have an album, and i listen to it...occasionally. it's not that i dislike the white stripes. i'm just not really into them. sort of underwhelmed.

You could think that the White Stripes are pretty good but still overrated. I am glad that Jack White makes his music and he is clearly a talented guy but I am glad that he stopped doing those interviews with Meg where he tried to prove how darn kookie he is.

I also think that Beck is interesting and I'm glad he's doing his thing, but I don't think Odelay was the best album of the 1990s and his live shows have never lived up to my expectations.

If you're going to be odd, I'd like you to have a sense of humor about yourself. That way, I know you're not doing a Marilyn Manson.
