There was a pretty good wind storm earlier this week and my dad and I found a fairly large spruce that was downed. When it dries out I'll have two months of good firewood. (y)
I wish I would have brought my camera because this thing was impressive. The roots and dirt that were exposed were at least twenty feet in diameter. When I chainsawed through it (about twenty feet from the base) the weight of the roots just pulled the rest of the tree right back up in the air like a giant weeble wobble.
I love the woods!
I'm a muthafuckin' lumberjack!

20 feet?!? Are you sure? That's fucking massive *does math* like 6 or 7 meters. No way.
edit - oh wait i see what you're saying now. the roots and stuff not the trunk. roger that. forget what i said.

lumberjacks rock!
Well not really only if they collect old discarded wood. Cause recycling rocks (!)
Its funny the government put up a sign not far from the old growth forest (well the place where the old growth forest used to be) that my parents live near advertising the 'big tree' that was spectacle that everyone should go see (cause they are fucking big they're been here since before the last ice age after all) anyhow this ones falled down I'm not sure when cause it was fallen down all my life well before that sign got put up... anyhow the irony is where the tree is is completely been deforested and surrounded by plantations but somehow we should go marvel and what used to be.!
Before we fucked it up.
Oh wood cutting. I remember having to do that on the weekend as a kid. God how I hated it.
I guess I dont think lumberjacks rock so much after all.
But if you like it, it must be cool. :)

I think it's cool because I heat my house using a natural resource that is just going to rot up in the woods if I don't cut it up and haul it out.
Sweet for my pocketbook and sweet for the environment.

Yeah but the smoke created by wood fires is actually bad for the environment there's a lot more environmentally friendly ways of heating and rotting wood is a normal part of nature and actaully is needed for a healthy sustainable eco-system.
But yeah I'm not saying it's not cool cause it is as long as you're not chopping down actual trees and anyhow my parents did it all my life and still do it today their house has like 3 fires (4 if you count the one in the cabin) 2 for heating one for cooking/hot water. And they call themselves envinronmentalists  . But anyhow going back to not cutting down living trees we shouldn't because that's just dumb. We need trees otherwise I wouldn't have things like well this desk for example.
OR my doors. Or my kitchen table.

Don't you think wood heating is better for the enviornment than electric heat like baseboards or forced air?

yeah but doesn't electricity come from burning fossil fuels which is actually a natural resource anyhow? (sorry that's not answering your question it just occured to me before when you said you'd rather use natural resources)
I dont know, I think solar power is good but probably not an option for you.... I think natural gas is probably a lot better than either electricity or wood.
But whatever you gotta make do with what you got (y)
