yeah I dont either and I know EXACTLY what you are saying. You can do a masters in a year these days. And not just cause you have awesome marks or anything like that just because university has been corporatised and you can buy just about any degree you like.

i don't even know about masters degrees, i'm just talking about undergrad

people talk about college educations like they're honorable things to have, but fuck, just peruse the internet, college is just a fuckfest unless you're an engineer, in which case college is really hard and you don't get laid but at least you're actually qualified for a decent job

and good luck if you're a computer science major because in that case, you have to work hard only to realize that your profession's been exported to india for 1/20th the price per employee and also you don't get laid LOL fuck you for liking computers

me, originally i majored in psychology. and then i realized wait, psychology's hard, and i don't like it, and it's gonna be worthless without a master's...and i TOTALLY don't wanna go to grad school

i'd better major in political science

turns out political science (or any liberal arts major for that matter, but especially poli sci, for some reason) is only good for getting into law school (a surprisingly large amount of first year law students are poli sci majors...but if you ask me, the skills involved in a philosophy major carry over better).

and here i am. i'm doing ok but i question what success is supposed to be

i dunno i mean, my mind is beginning to fit into that whole law student mold, i'm beginning to get into a routine, i'm beginning to think like a lawyer (as best as a first year student can, at least...civil procedure's beginning to make sense, anyway, and that scares the fuck out of me), but....i'm not sure that i like what i'm becoming.

Yeah it's the same with undergrad here I just used the masters as an example to highlight the decline of tertiary education. Here because uni is government sponsored (through a loans scheme) university used to be universal in the sense that IF you could get the marks you got get into a degree. These days, because universities are corporatised, they're allowed to say how many government sponsored places they offer within a course (which you still need the marks to access) however - I was actually told for some subjects, well there's no places left UNLESS you're full-fee paying.
I'm probably not explaining it very well but what I"m saying is pretty much that if you have money you can buy a degree regardless of your academic ability. And on top of that recently they passed a law that made it legal for universities to charge what ever they like for a degree, before the government regulated how much could be charged - so its becoming more like the oldschool where only the rich and privledged get to go to university.

I am confused though, before in the other thread you said something along the lines of 'yeah but that was in college' (and I've always tried to figured it out and what I thought I'd figured was that 'college' was some sort of 'prep' you have to do to get into university, an element that we don't have - you go straight from highschool to university here)... but in this thread you say that college is university, so does that mean that you're still in college just studying law now? But it's not grad school? Where you would do a masters or phd or graduate diploma?
Perhaps to put it really simply for me tell me how long it would take you to do a stock-standard law degree without the trimmings? Here its four years.
Many degrees though you can do in three years, including mine.
Straight after highschool.

i've hit the stage in my life where i never really wanna study again. only 19 and i'll probably take that back sometime soon, but right now, i reeeeaally don't wanna.... hand in this assignment/do this exam/go to class for a while now.

law school lasts for 3 years

university (in america, it's interchangably called college) lasts 4 years

high school (which you call college, to my understanding) lasts 4 years

and grad school....i don't know. i think it varies, depending on what kind of degree you want. to be honest, i'm not sure what the difference is between law school and grad school. the name, maybe

you seem pretty smart, you can probably get a full scholarship to a shitty college at least

i mean, i got a full scholarship to a shitty law school

i didn't go, i decided to go to the most expensive law school i got accepted to (loans are generally available, if you want them, just be ready to be pay them back forever and ever afterwards), but the point is, apply to schools that are so obviously beneath you, and fill out the financial aid applications and hopefully some school will offer to pay for you to go there. and you'll always have that option.

I still am tinkering with the idea of going to law school, dunno dunno
environmental law would be fulfilling but I wouldnt be getting rich
but out here in british columbia youd never know though, lots of hippy mentality etc etc

I also want to become a librarian, but thats more of a pipe dream

I just really have no urge to get my masters right now in the science filed because it would drive me nuts to choose what topic Id feel worthy of spending 2 years of my time on and perhaps a further 2 to get my pHd.
My original degree was a three way, cellular, molecular and microbial biology so right there it would be hard to narrow my field of interest but now that ive done nothing but analytical chemistry the past 2.5 years as a living Id rather do that but I dont think my practical experience wouldnt get me into a chemistry masters program up against peolple who have actual chem degrees
I dont know this for sure though

over a year ago when I tried getting into a post degree technical program for clinical genetics they basically rejected me only because I hadnt been working in the biology field since id graduated and were all "ew! chemistry?"
and that dashed my dream of completing that program which I would have followed up by getting my masters in "genetics counselling" which required the sort of training that program provided just to apply even

so Im assuming the prejudice works both ways, or perhaps Im telling myself that so I wont be rejected like that ever again and have my dreams dashed because im a pussy

Im sticking where I am though probably because I could own this company within 5ish years and be highly successful as a female in a male dominated field and have enough money to do stupid shit like travel to holland just to buy any 80,000 dollar horse that catches my fancy like my boss does right now
and also starting in january my boss is going to pay for me to become a certified assayer, something which isnt easily attained and she'll be paying for it all plus the time I spend studying for all the exams

pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

I think getting an undergrad degree still holds alot of merit, highschool is a crock of shit and should be shortened to 2-3 years
let the them all free at 15 or 16 and those who want to go further in school can and those that dont wont be wasting the gov'ts money and can go off and do what they actually want to

I wish I would have gone to technical school for electrical engineering or some shit. liberal arts degrees are crap. I had some girl observing me today while I was "teaching" and I had my hood up and my sunglasses on and the kid was pushing my arm saying, "don't look! don't look!" because he has ADD and if I look at what he's writing, he'll just start talking about his uncle or how his shoes used to have wheels. and the chick is like "so, what exactly are you doing right now? are you not allowed to look at what he's doing?"

and I had to be like, "well, [student] likes to put on a show when I watch what he's doing" and then lo and behold, because she was watching, he started fake writing and erasing things he had already done and she was like, "he's fake writing! he's finished, and now he's trying to trick you!" and I was like, "bitch, please, if you weren't here, he'd be done by now, unh!"

my point is, college is stupid. I mean, you learn some things, but if you're dumb, there ain't no fixing it. a good healthy dose of community service carries you a far fucking way, but of all the assholes I've encountered during my community service experiences, I can tell you that 75+% of the people who do that are ONLY doing it for personal gain.

I know people who make a shit ton of money and they're dumb as rocks. it infuritates me daily.

we call high school high school. we got primary school, which is your elementry, which goes to yr 7 generally. then straight to high school, which is yr 8 to 12. no junior high for us!!

some hoity toity private schools call themselves colleges just to sound fancy. its amazing how parents can mistake outrageous fees and an antiquated school uniform for a good education.

well to be fair, that's just in SA cause in NSW and VIC highschool is grades 7-12 and in Tas highschool is grades 7-10 and college is year 11-12 unless u go to a regional or private highschool that goes up to year 12 (but usually only offers a really shitful limited range of tce/vce/hsc/whatever u call it over there subjects.

oh and haha u said hoity toity

the rest is so true though

but going back to the point at hand, having left school in year 8 my dad brought me up believing that if i just got a tertiary education everything will be alright. Well I got one AND EVERYTHINGS NOT ALRIGHT.

damn straight I have issues.

my department can boast a 100% post graduate employment rate

although some kids go into grad school, but i don't know why because its just showing you the same shit that you would learn on the job in a more stressful environment

i think in the US, college is what high school used to be. it's not a place to learn a skill, it's a place to learn to think. which is necessary, but we are delaying growth.

personally, this is why ive decided to go onto the path ive chosen. i want a phd. im too smart to be taught to think without using it properly.
