Maggot Brain by Funkadelic was the best, most immense and amazing pure funk ever made in the history of funk. Anybody disagree?

i'm a massive fan of funkadelic, but that early era funkadelic had a lot more in common with hendrix than the funk at that particular time. Sure it had some very funky moments, but the best pure funk album ? no

Funkadelic's thing was kind of more rock/funk fuck/rock than pure funk. That's the sense I got, anyway -- that Parliament (or, hell, even Bootsy's Rubber Band) was more about the funk and Funkadelic was more about making a brew of things.

4 sure
the first Funkadelic albums were more of a psychedelic rock funk mix, with moments of blues and gospel thrown in. As they developed probably around America Eats its Young the rock started to slide a little. Then Lets Take it to the stage was more funky (if memory serves me right that was the first album Bootsy played on, and he brought with him order and "the one" from his experiences with the JB's), but there was always that heavier element to the funkadelic records

I recently decided to start listening to Funkadelic and I bought an original pressing of One Nation, how good is that album compared to some of the other Funkadelic and Parliament records?
I'm hoping it will be at my house today because I've been waiting a while now :(

it's a good album but it's hard to compare with the earlier stuff because the sound is so different. It's better than uncle jam and hardcore jollies but not as good as tales of kidd funkadelic and lets take it to the stage, but you know, thats just my opinion. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, the title track is a classic of course

So the style of the band pretty much changes a good deal from album to album? If so that's a good thing, that way they all will sound unique and different if I decide to collect some Funkadelic records (y)

hmmmm i wouldn't say changes a good deal from album to album but if you start at the beginning with funkadelic and go through to one nation there's definately a massive change in the sound. From psychfunkrock to the straight up p-funk they became famous for
also pick up cosmic slop and standing on the verge of getting it on AND music for your mother is very nice. A collection of all the singles they released on westbound with the b-sides

The whole P-funk crew did some great stuff, and I wouldn't trade things like Maggot Brain for the world, but if I could have just one single iddy biddy album of the whole catalogue, I'm pretty sure it's be Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo System. I fuggin' LOVE that album.

i know what you mean, it's far from the best but if you're going to be a completist it's still an important part of the jigsaw. Plus it gave some clues to the sound George was heading for with his solo material

let me think on this one, i'm not sure i could think of one album above all the others that was "the" most essential. For me everyone has it's moments of genius.
