Lady Sovereign: (http://www.harpmagazine.com/articles/detail.cfm?article_id=4777)
The Real Slim Lady
By Trevor Kelley
This year, London-based rapper Lady Sovereign looks poised to become England’s answer to Eminem: on Public Warning, her highly anticipated full-length debut, the self-proclaimed “biggest midget in the game” employs the same melodic inventiveness and hard-hitting working class rhymes that made Slim Shady a multi-platinum star. With this in mind, Harp called the 20-year-old Sovereign and asked her to provide us with five of the most surreal moments she’s experienced as the big leagues beckon.
1.) Made Page Six of The New York Post
After being involved in an unexpected scuffle at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Sovereign found herself sharing column space with people like Ivanka Trump and Nick Lachey. “It was so stupid,” she says of the incident that led to her brief gossip rag fame. “My manager ended up getting a pounding by, like, seven massive, pumped-up Miami guys and some girl basically hit me in my face.”
2.) Hung out with a Beastie Boy
An avid fan of Sovereign’s music, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz invited her over to his apartment in New York earlier this year to work on some beats. “He’s a cool guy,” she says. “We had a lot in common. It didn’t seem like I was chilling with Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys. I wasn’t really fazed by that. We was just chilling, man.”
3.) Found out that someone at Red Bull is a fan
After mentioning in a handful of interviews that she likes to have a Red Bull and vodka before hitting the stage, the ubiquitous energy drink company showed Sovereign some love. “Every time I go to a hotel in America it’s like, ‘Sovereign, you have a package.’ Then I open this bag and it’s full of vodka and Red Bull,” she says. “It’s like, ‘What are you trying to do to me?!!’”
4.) Had a bad burger, became an Internet sensation
Hours before her live debut in New York City, Sovereign began experiencing stomach pains due to a rather regrettable pre-show dinner at McDonald’s. As numerous blogs reported the next day, the show was a bit iffy—“It’s known as the cheeseburger show,” she laughs—but Sovereign has remained a favorite among online tastemakers ever since.
5.) Was asked to rap on the spot by Jay-Z
Before signing to Def Jam—currently overseen by Jay-Z—her freestyle capabilities were tested by the iconic Brooklyn rapper when he asked her to rhyme for him on the spot. A few verses later, she had a recording contract, but the label still hasn’t offered her a gold and diamond-encrusted necklace, which is probably for the best. “I think it would break my neck if I tried to wear one of them,” Sovereign insists. “Seriously, them things is big.”
