I've been reading reviews online and all I can say is that trying to pick out the right one is very over whelming.
I'm looking for a cam that takes excellent pictures in poor lighting and takes video with really good sound. 10 Megapixels is a plus but will settle for something no lower the 7.
I plan on spending around 400 bucks.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've been looking at the Canon PowerShot A460. The overview on at Dell.com claims that it is good in lower light, but I've red reviews elsewhere that says otherwise.

I guess I really don't care what other reviews say. I'm seriously leaning towards this one.

Yo Bionic, did you get the dvd's I sent your ways? I sent them off in the early part of lastweek?

i think that's the newer version of my camera (is it the newest?) you saw there... but you can get it for cheaper than that. i just saw it on bensbargains.net like last week for less than that. keep tabs on that website...
i did a lot of research before i got mine, but my price range was lower. i think cosmo does photography, im not sure if she was serious about the nikkon, but that might be good too?
i stick by my canon.
and no i havent gotten the dvd yet, but i havent been home. im going there tonight, so hopefully it'll be there!

my girlfriend has a Panasonic DMC-FZ5. it's a couple of years old now, but it's still pretty balla. the 12times optical zoom is sweet for a little camera like that.

nikon > canon. canon is good, but nikon's D serious = instant spoogery.
examples of shots taken w/ my brother's nikon D100 (run you over a grand but HOLY SHIT is it an awesome camera):

long exposure at night of El Capitan (http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d164/105cosmo/yosemite4.jpg)(you can even see the lights of climbers!)
if anyone wants to see any more shots, pm me and i'll send you a link. i've got waayyy better ones.
the D70 is good too. but god, i am salivating for the day he outgrows that camera.

I'm not looking for something this expensive or something this bulky. I'm looking for something I can throw in my pocket and walk around with while visiting unfamiliar places. Something I can take to a concert. A point and shoot camera.

for the cheapo cameras, not so much i think. i don't know much about cheaper digital cams. i have a casio ex-slim (i think) that had one of those huge honkin' LED screens that promptly got fucked up within a few months. it still takes awesome photos but half of the screen is a pixelly psychedellic mess. i've heard good things about canon's cheaper stuff.

my dad has that D70 I think. whenever I hold it I always feel like a kid again...not excited as such, more petrified that I'm gonna drop it and get a spanking...again.
i just bought a camera on impulse last night because it was only $180. i don't have $180 but it was too good of a deal :(
you cant go wrong with nikons period.

Sony W-100 (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/W100/W100A.HTM)
8 mb, 80-1250 ISO, great for filming with sound (can't zoom while filming tho), auto, manual or program, big screen, small camera.
I had the W-30 for 1½ years when I dropped it at the Hives's gig and the lens got wonky. This one is better in scarce lighting, and a bit better at gigs as well (better manual choices) and the quality of filming is pretty good (check out my You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/my_videos) stuff, the ones from October forward are with the new one) or check out my My Space block for pics.
Cost me approx 3250,- SEK through internet, so I guess that's less than $400, too tired to check now.
I really wanted Fuji Coolpix, but as I already had 1 GB memory cards for Sony so I didn't wanna start buying new ones, then the other one didn't fit, and the USB cable is different, as well as the batteries (on W-30 you could use ordinary AA-batteries, this one has specials, so getting a spare battery would cost some as well...)

What is the battery life like? I really wanted something that takes AA batteries. Having some crazy type battery means that you are up a creek without a paddle if your battery goes dead.
I can pick this cam up for under 300 right now.
Dungle nuts! I hate procrastinating over something like a camera. Someone needs to come up with a website the rents camera's out for a month and if you like it, you pay the rest and keep it.

All of my cameras are sony cybershot. I've got a 2 year old 5mp which is pocket sized and a dscf828.
I used to have a 3.2 mp cybershot that took impressive pics too.
Here's (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_BrowseCatalog-Start?CategoryName=dcc_DIDigitalCameras_megapixels _7&Dept=cameras) a link to some of their cameras, some of the prices of only $199 for the 6 m.p's.

wellllll jim...do you want a point and shoot, or slr? i don't know much about p&s cameras. i've heard good things about the coolpix series though. a canon Rebel is a really good starter camera...and if you have more to spend, the D series is where it's at. the thing with slrs is usually the bodies and lenses are separate and mucho dinero, but that means you can interchange them. which we photo nerds love.
looks like the D50 is right up your alley (http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-6-1MP-Digital-Camera-Body/dp/B0009GZAGO/ref=pd_ts_p_10/002-2708688-2968055?ie=UTF8&s=photo)
^that's only the body, though. but once you've got that, your lens options are wiiiide open. the things i would do with a camera like that...sigh.

Exilim.
Friend of mine has an old model exilim and it has the most annoying flash in existance. Nice and compact cam though.
Another friend of mine had this Fujifilm s602zoom (http://www.idg.es/BBDD_IMAGEN/pcontac192_fujis602.jpg) lying around and I could have it.
I like it but it has a bit too much noise in the picture for my liking. It's an oldie.

Has the flash improved on those? We used to forbid him from taking too many pictures because you'd literally be stuck with a colourful spot in your field of vision for quite some time.

You'd have to avoid the nasty looks from certain cam users though.

ok... what i have is a canon powershot a620... the pics are great, you can do a lot (not all obviously) of the stuff you can do with much higher end cameras like fucking with the f-stop, focus, aperture, shutter speed, etc. you can also attach different lenses to it, which i dont plan on doing anytime soon. the pivot/swing screen is very handy and not common in digital photo cams - its good for things like taking pics/video when you're in a crowd. you can hold the camera above you and adjust the screen. and the video is pretty damn good for a digi cam. look at the links in my signature for examples of video with sound.
i also bought the nikon coolpix 1 as a gift for someone who doesnt care much for photography but wanted something good as a point/shoot. excellent camera

Without using it they've lasted quite a few days, haven't been able to check how long tho, cause I use mine just about every day. But I've been able to fill my 512 kB several times without charging. It also depends how much you use the zoom and check out the pics you've taken... I always have to show the kids at work all the pics I've taken, they're so curious to see themselves.
