me and this girl at work. I work with her on sundays and wednesdays and she doesn't talk very much. when she does, it's pretty brief. she's not awkward or unfriendly, she just doesn't appear to want to make conversation. I asked her about where she's from, what she went to school for...um, if something's funny on the radio, I say, "ha ha". or, like today I was listening to NPR and it was pretty interesting, and if the other girls I worked with were there, we'd be discussing the programing....but not this girl. hmph.
also, I'm like, the boss of her...I have to give her tasks. maybe that's why she doesn't talk much. I'M TOO INTIMIDATING! or maybe she just doesn't care about neanderthal DNA or virtual products getting sold for real money for games like warcraft and second life. :(
anyway, give me some suggestions for topics we can discuss. she went to school for dancing and she's from colorado.
go!
butts
i'm one of those people, it's always so awkward when i'm with someone else who doesn't say anything
but talk about butts, everyone likes butts

yeah, me too, that's why it's hard. BUTT, wouldn't you like to talk about neanderthal DNA? AND WHAT MIGHT BE DISCOVERED?!

Maybe she feels uncomfortable around you. Just start a conversation about NOTHING. That's right. A....Conversation.......about....NOTHING!

Talk about how you have nothing to talk about.

I'm totally that girl. :( I'm usually better at conversing when there are 3 or more people interacting. If I'm one on one with someone I don't know very well, I get shy and feel sort of uncomfortable and have a hard time coming up with topics of conversation.
I'd bet she would loosen up if you took the reigns. Ask her questions about herself, but light-hearted things like her feelings on our current economic status and her stance on abortion. She'll warm right up to you!

I kinda don't get why you need to be talking with her. Sometimes it's OK not to talk, you know? She just might be a person that doesn't feel a great need for conversation while working. You said you get on fine and it's not like she's unfriendly, just not a chatter. Why worry about it?

maybe she's gay for you
that'd be cool

i wish more people would ask that question. there's no need for silence to be uncomfortable, just shut up and enjoy the moment

go!
Did you have trouble breathing in Colorado due to the high altitude?
Why did Colorado turn down the 1976 winter Olympics? Are they too good for curling?
Have you ever been to Dove Creek, Colorado? Did you know it is the Pinto Bean capital of the world?--- And Rocky Ford is the melon capital of the world.
Have you ever tried country western line dancing? I prefer bellydancing....do you want to look at my six pack abs?
Dancing is a major? I know a guy that majored in basket weaving.
Can you pop?
That should get you thru lunch. Good luck.

maybe you're right. I suppose I just feel awkward because I feel like I should be the one facilitating the conversation...but I suppose it's not my fault if there's no talking. I guess I'd just rather be alone though, so I can sing and talk to myself and practice my fake accents. :/
I have a feeling she's not going to be working there forever though. she'd rather be a dance teacher. I like the other new girl better, she talks about her interior design classes and cats and we watch youtube cat videos. she's from wisconsin and she was shy at first and didn't talk, kinda awkward too, but she giggled at some radio commercials that I also find hilarious, so I knew she was cool. also, her birthday is the same day as mine AND our boss's. that's pretty weird.
I suppose I'm just not used to being in a position of authority. it's working out fine otherwise though, and I've gotten two raises since I started there less than a year ago, meanwhile 3 people have been fired.

She's probably the same way.

I should ask her about her purse, it's Betsey Johnson. it's pretty cool.
I don't know what I'm talking about, I don't think I said more than 5 words the first 3 months I worked there.

there's a guy in our place, complete geek, good programmer but has zero personality...he lives in a very small village and doesn't even know the name of his only pub round the corner from his house....he's 33 and lives at home with mummy....he's the same, doesn't talk to anyone but he has a bit of a crappy attitude anyway....

I just swear at inanimate objects that aren't functioning at their peak levels and sing along badly to the stereo if I work with someone I hate
