it's the optimism, it is so bright that it somehow calls attention to how fucked up things really are. Nothing is impossibly wonderful in real life like "surfer girl" or "little duece coupe", these things only make me think of broken horrible things.

You're probably not that far off. Yeah, their early material that paints this picture of sun, fun, surf, cars & girls isn't exactly what I'd call "dark," but as Brian Wilson developed as a songwriter, many of those hopeful whistful songs have the undertone of melancholy.

Listen to "Wouldn't It Be Nice"... that song represents what he WISHES things were like, not the reality.

It also helps that Brian Wilson had a nervous breakdown.

The Beach Boys kick ass. I saw Mike Love and Bruce Johnston play live with the new beach boy line up and then I saw Brian play with his new band for the Smile tour when they hit Chicago. Great stuff.

diana, not all of their work was that poppy and sunny brightness of their youth. seriously, go deeper into their catalogue.

kokomo was the firt 45 i ever got. in kindergarten (or maybe preschool), the headmistress or whoever walked in and asked the teacher who had done the best that day. and she said me. :o it was kokomo on one side, little richard - tutti frutti on the other. no idea why.
