View Full Version : i'm just discovering arrested development
and i really really like it
i slept on it for far too long but i've finally picked it up. i signed up for netflix and after a series of mishaps they've finally sent the first disc to me
but as it happens a friend lent me the whole first season on the same day, so cool
but yeah, this show rules. i'm a little weirded about by the whole george michael and his cousin thing but hey, it's an emotion and i'm feeling it, so that's cool.
david cross continues to be awesome
i'll be sure to provide continuous updates as i go

i would only watch it if nothing else was on, but it wasn't a bad show though, i just never got into it
the only thing i don't like about it is ron howard's narration
i don't like ron howard, i prefer it when he's invisible
buster's great
Fantizmic show. Keep us posted.
Ooh - also - it wouldn't be a bad idea to check out the wiki guides to inside jokes and running gags for episodes you've already seen.

i like them both, the show and the band. i always feel a bit out of place listening to their music because it's all very black, but I still enjoy it. The show is just genius (y)

It's one of the few TV shows where you have to pay attention. I laughed out loud at almost every episode. That doesn't happen with TV very often.
I know what you mean about the Ron Howard narration. At first, it bothered me, but by the 3rd season it was quite funny. I don't know if that's because I got used to it or whether I just enjoyed all the Happy Days references. Oh, and when the narration went on and on about how the show wasn't saying anything bad about Andy Griffith . . . . :p

It took me the longest time to get past the fact that the kid was named 'George Michael', and that at every opportunity he was referred to as 'George Michael'. Fuck, I had to rewatch the first 3 episodes because I was Hawwww-hawwwing about his name.
...and that's why you always leave a note!

The episode where Michael has to look after Buster is gold. When Buster goes off about his mother, the reactions of the room evoke The Office.
haha! it's james lipton, and david cross, in a scene together! david cross lampooned the fuck out of james lipton in a stand-up bit, this is great

Gob and Dwight are very similar. Watch an episode of each back to back and you will be surprised.
Like I said, the best thing about Arrested is that is just gets better and better. All the subtle references to things that have already happening, running jokes, makes it a show you can watch a billion times over and find something new every time.

What a fun show.
Yeah, Bob -- like folks are saying, as you get further and further into it, the layers of jokes keeps building. It's amazingly subtle for a show that is kind of a joke about sitcoms in the first place.(y)

OMG!
Just finished disc 1 & 2 of season one...waiting on netflix to get the 3rd. I finally got conned into getting it after listening to everyone in my family constantly quoting it. I LOVE IT!
my cousins always do the "countdown" but I don't think I've gotten that far yet, what season goes that start?
I love Buster.

When Lindsey and Gob do the Chicken Dance. Thats the good shit right thur.
I also feel kind of sad when I see all 3 seasons on DVD next to each other at home. There are two normal sized boxes and then this piddly one for season three. It almost brings a tear to my eye.

It's funny -- I was just re-watching season one this weekend. the show got so much better and snappier as it went along. Amazing.
Does anybody else notice that Jason Bateman is basically channeling Albert Brooks? Almost identical deliveries, except that Bateman never finally wigs out like Brooks does.

Bob Loblaw cracks me up. I love his "This isn't the first time I've taken over from Barry Zuckercorn. I can do everything he can do. Plus skew younger......with jurors."
Also, how Eve Holt's catchphrase in Gob's yearbook is "Eve Holt!". :D
G.O.B is by far the funniest character, but Buster is a close second in my book.
All the pot references in the show are great.
Buster trying to get George Michael to get him some pot for Lucille 2:
"I'm not S'ing around, man. My old lady's on the floor."
When Michael asks Oscar to give Lucille a little Afternoon Delight:
"I wonder how I'm gonna get it in her? Maybe I'll stick it in her brownie."

I still think the best moment is when George Michael wears the rocket suit and goes after David Cross in a mole suit while he's trashing the tiny housing project while being watched by Japanese businessmen. I'm laughing as I type this.
Or it could be when Gob does his show outside the courthouse in front of a "free chicken" sign.

hahaha, i watched that the other day, that was great. in any other show, it would be such a tacky ridiculous scene, but it was set up so impossibly well that it actually worked, i really can't wrap my head around how they managed to do it

That particaular scene was the culmination of 4 separate pretexts, meshing together flawlessly to form unbridled hilarity. I laughed so fucking hard when that scene started, and fell off my seat when George Michael flew in. Shit. It is an incredible scene. (y)

I think right around when the third season got canceled there were talks of doing an Arrested Development movie.
So wasn't the third season great?
yes, very much so
i still think the narration was annoying, but the show rules regardless. it's got such impossibly clever writing, even tobias' gay jokes manage to be constantly clever and not lame.
tobias: i should tell the hot cops to change to a more nautical theme...perhaps 'hot sailors'...better yet! hot seam-
michael: iiii like hot sailors
tobias: me too...
it's a shame to see it go before its time. not that 3 seasons is anything to scoff at. some of my other favorite shows (the office, spaced) only have 2 seasons, and they're still classics, but i'm assuming that they stopped after 2 seasons because they wanted to, not because they were cancelled. so that's annoying.
oh well, i'm looking forward to watching them again
i've been drinking more juice lately, and every time i do, i think of buster

I really liked some of the jokes the narrator did, what didn't you like about it?
i just thought it was really intrusive. like, he'd explain the punchlines to the jokes, but i think they'd be much more satisfying if you got them on their own.
for example, in the one where they build a house (which is both the title, and an accurate description of the episode), there's a scene earlier in the episode where mike and gob are playing rock paper scissors, and michael always chooses rock and gob always chooses scissors (or something, i forget who chooses what, it isn't important). and then later in the episode, when they build the fake house and it collapses, gob attacks michael with the ceremonial scissors, and michael picks up a fake rock to defend himself. that's a hilarious callback joke, but the narration comes out and explains the punchline to you, i dunno, i just didn't like it.
