View Full Version : I'm scared.

I'm applying to University of Alberta for the fall 2007 semester. It looks like they have a pretty hard history program, so I don't know if I'll get in. I have decent grades, not sure if they're enough. I have excellent letters of recommendation and relevant work experience in my field.

I keep putting off submitting the application because applying is the first step towards failure. Plus, it's $100 CDN to apply.

If I don't get in, I'll be sad, but I won't exactly be shocked either. I mean, I'm an international student trying to get in as a qualifying graduate student...it seems like an uphill battle. I'm just pretty scared about pressing that "submit" button. :(

perhaps i of all people am unqualified to be asking this but

why do you want a graduate degree in history?

I have my undergrad in history. I'll be going into US Cold War military history which can actually further my career. I'm planning to work in the government. Can't give specifics, but it actually would help and advance my salary.

And Heiress, I'll be applying for Fall '07. I'm just scurred cuz they said I need a 3.5 in my last 2 years of school (I have a 3.32) otherwise I'd be considered for a "qualifying graduate" which means I'd have to get up to a 3.5 my first year. I'm confident I could do it, but I don't know if I'll be able to convince them that I could. :-/

Ohhh shit yeah I forgot you already had your undergrad!

naw I think youll get in, I worked with a chick who was fucking retarded and the most worthless conversationalist ever and she got accepted to U of A for grad school in the field of chemistry but then she got kicked out because I think they realized they'd made a mistake

so getting in should be somewhat easy and I know you got your shit together so youll be fine once you get over that first acceptance hump

I keep wondering if I'd have a better chance if I lived in Canada though. I know for UMD, they HAVE to accept a certain amount of in-state students before they start accepting others. North Carolina does the same for their undergraduate program - 80% of the kids that go to state schools in NC are from that state...it's pretty damn hard to get in if you're an outsider.

I don't know if they do the same thing for graduate school, or if Canada even does that all. Like in-province people are preferred to people from out of province or whatever.

Ah well, I can hope. Thanks for the words of encouragement Airesse. :o

Heh, I'm pretty sure there's no quota system at U of A... there's probably more kids there from Saskatchewan than Alberta. I know lots of people from high school who attend or attended U of A. So I doubt your origin will factor into the equation.

On the other hand, at my university foreign students (of who there are a great many) pay double the tuition Canadian citizens do. I don't know if U of A has a similar policy, but you might want to check that out if finances are a concern.

You want to hear something ridiculous?

You all complain about tuition, and apparently the international students get "screwed." Yet if I were to attend U of A, I'd pay $7500 CDN per YEAR (which equals around $6,600 USD). If I were to attend University of Maryland as an IN-STATE student (this would be the lowest price for students) I'd pay $6,600 per SEMESTER.

I would save 50% by attending a school 2,000 miles away and in another country. How's THAT for high tuition?

UMD was about $3,900 per semester for undergrad in-state students. For out-of-state students, it was around $10,000 per semester just for tuition. That's right. 10 THOUSAND per semester. Their degree, with everything included, would be more around $100,000. Jesus.

SEE?

Pipe down, Canadians. You have everything better up there and don't even know it.

Brett was all "My tuition's gonna be $5,000." And I was all "Holy shit that's a lot. I felt bad for complaining about $4,000 a semester!" "No, Diana, this is per year." "THEN STOP YOUR BITCHING!" :(

FACT

its pretty fucking cheap to go to school In Canada

my first year, two? I caught the tail end of "the tuition freeze" era in my province and paid 800 bucks a semester for school
800 BUCKS!

my books would end up costing as much as my tuition each semester!

technical schools here have pretty pricey tuition, but you get more bang for your buck that way

Good schools want students who aren't local -- they want diversity so they can show that they're not just a lame local college. I would think that you would be a desirable candidate unless for some freaky reason there are a lot of other east coast americans applying. You never know who your competitors are, so just need to concentrate on how great you would be in the program and do your best to sell yourself.

I've thought about grad school in canada and I can't believe how cheap it is compared to even the worst schools in the US.

Annnnd I applied online yesterday and sent in all my materials (except one survey which will be sent next week) into the school. My package is about 95% complete and submitted. It's still very scary to me, I don't want to hear an answer from them, really. :(

My boss told me there's no doubt in his mind that I got in, so at least if I don't I can go yell at him. :o
