I don't think my life would be worse off if I never heard another Bob Marley song again.

The best thing about Bob Marley is that after a while he gets you interested in listening to Peter Tosh. Exodus is a great album though.

yeah. i don't think i'd be too devastated either.
my friend's ex once got so pissed at me for expressing the exact same sentiment. sure, i can respect them, but they're so played to death that i reeaaally don't need to ever hear them again. and the people that get really really heavily into marley are, for the most part, retards. she dumped him (y)
I never really got into Marley at all either. I don't protest loudly when he comes on...maybe I just don't get it.

I wouldn't be all that surprised to hear that a lot of the notions you dorks have on Marley's music are based entirely on your experiences listening to the Legend compilation.

You know, you're right. Then again, when I listen through a whole greatest hits album and nothing makes me bat an eyelash, I find my drive to listen to an artist's whole catalogue drops pretty quickly.

I haven't listened to Bob Marley in a long-ass time.
Nevertheless, that "Live!" album is one of the best live albums out of any artist.
Besides, "Redemption Song" is killer!
If you're not into Bob Marley based off of "Legend" maybe try the live album or "Catch A Fire" or something.

my notions on Marley's music are based on hearing way too much of it at parties, barbecues, weddings, in cars, smoking pot, etc etc. usually the people who put it on are the same people who love Sublime and wear baseball caps backwards.

And what do they play? Exactly. They play songs from Legend.
Peter Tosh songs are better than Peter Tosh albums.

ahaha. so true.
I think Sublime kind of fits in this same situation. I've liked and like both. But really, there are a ton of songs that if they were never played again I would't cry about it. In fact I think I might welcome it. There are lots of other good songs that get no play.
Perhaps that's for the better though so I can still enjoy them.

Legend is way overplayed, but it's a good introduction. I just don't know who can listen to it objectively since it's sort of gotten niched as the "compulsory reggae album."

he's good? He was fantastic! Lord of lords, king of kings, without him you likely would'nt know who Lee Perry,Peter Tosh,King Tubby,Bunny Wailer or Toots and the Maytals even were/are....Oh my god...The Clash would have never gone to Jamaica or the Stones or Eric Clapton or Johnny Cash........."Legend" is not a Robert Nesta Marley record it was Sony money grab... if you can buy it at a gas station it's not a Marley record......if it has to be complilation oriented I'd suggest getting into "Kaya" or "Catch a Fire".....if it's a comprehensive vibe your after, the box set "Songs of Freedom" is stunning....and if your interest is peeked read "Catch a Fire" by Tomothy White.....I just can't say enough,Marley is legacy material his importance can not be undermined...dig deeper,I know you'll fall deeply in love.....Mr Brown!
P.S: I do not endorse Jamie Fox as an appropriate actor to portray Bob...or anybody else....he annoys me.....

"New Bob Marley biopic is in the works, and Hollywood star Jamie Foxx will be playing the role of the legend. Rachid Bouchareb, best known as the producer of the 2006 Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix award-winner Flandres, will direct the movie. The film is the brainchild of Marley's widow, Rita Marley, and will cover the early part of Marley's life....."

"Ray" was really good and Foxx was excellent as Ray Charles. Bob Marley I'm having a hard time grasping, tho...

He is pretty fucking good. But he is probably my least listened to reggae artist. I didn't even own a bob marley album until last year....but have been listening to reggae for the past 15 years. Weird.
yeah marley was brilliant, however those compilations/best ofs are played out to death.
