no offence at all, and i mean that, but these artists are among the well known, not lessr known, but yeah, my vote is for the late 80's early 90's for sure. you're gunna need erik b and rakim, run dmc, ummm how about the hit squad groups such as k-solo, das-efx, redman, erik sermon.... or the heroglyphics groups such as Casual, Del, souls of mischief.... there are thousands of great groups out there.. dont forget PE !!!!!!!!!!!!

Lord Finnesse-Return of the Funky Man and Showbiz & AG-Runaway Slave (if you can find it).

I had the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy album as a youngster and got rid of it because Michael Franti, although well meaning, had an awful flow.

Give him some Stezo, Digital Underground, Main Source, 3rd bass, Nice & Smooth, Kwame the Boy Genius, Geto Boys, Brand Nubian, KMD, Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy, Special Ed and one of the most underrated ever: Poor Righteous Teachers (y) ! Da shit!

Just give the guy a copy of "Rapcats" by Quasimoto and tell him to check out every name dropped on that track - it pretty much covers everything you need to hear from that era.

Heh heh. Thing is, about 2 months after that 12 dropped and everyone was loving it, we used to do a night at the Afro-Caribbean club in Doncaster and K.I.D and Carruthers turned up. Unfortunately, no-one knew what they looked like and so we didn't realise it was them until the end of the night when they introduced themselves - by which point it was too late for them to get on the mic. Bugger.....

I can't help but be read as a bit biased nowadays. But yo, I got to agree with the Guy Incognee. Peep my posts from the days of way back before I was a got damn Goat. I was touting The Tricks from day one and then some. It's definitely worth tracking this joint down.

Can't remember the name of the night, but was Fridays. 1 room hip hop, 1 room reggae and 1 room Jungle, when jungle was first coming up.

I know Tickhill, and a few guys from there - mainly ex graf writers. I am 33 so if the person you know is between 30 and 36 - I'll probably know them (especially if they were part of Brotherhood, Eyecatchers or Untouchables crews)

just curious, if you think this is lesser known hip hop from that period, what do you consider known ?

I see it in 4 levels, and break it down like this:

Pop Hop - Top 40 & MTV shit - Run DMC, Dre, Cool J, etc.
Good stuff all hip hop fans know about, Tribe, De La, EB & Rakim, etc.
Good stuff that never got the attention it deserved
Obscure shit that's underground for the sake of being underground

I'm looking for the good stuff that never got the attention it deserved

He doesn't like Kool Keith or Ultramagnetic.
He knows about Pharcyde, Funkdoobiest, Slick Rick, Black Sheep and such.
I played him Masta Ace before, and he thought he bit Eminem's style.

Thanks for the suggestions. There is some good stuff here I didn't even think about, and shit I've never heard of. I'm downloading that mix right now
