yo, so I went to paris last weekend! I am going to share some pictures with you all. no, it’s not as bad as being forced to see your family’s tourist snaps because it’s on the interweb and I will have readable commentary that may be interesting on its lonesome. and hey, some people may be genuinely intrigued. some of you fools have never even been to europe before! le shock! oh, and to make it even more special i am going to punctuate it with the same pidgin french ranald and I had to communicate in when we got there.

okeydokey. so, ranald told me where we were going on the Friday night so I could, like, spend the evening googling and finding somewhere good to eat. you know, all the important things. we left glasgow at 5am or something ridonkulous and flew to birmingham and then arrived at paris charles de gaulle round lunchtime.

oh yeah, this is the channel and the english coast. goodbye england, bonjour france!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3358.jpg

the passport guy said bonjour to us and I was instantly charmed! my previous experience of france has been mostly spent in petrol stations and driving in a car to various ferry terminals so I was really pleased to be there.

anyway, we managed to get on to the RER and navigate the metro really easily, and found our hotel in a snap. btw, we stayed at l'hôtel auteuil tour eiffel which I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone – it’s in the roland garros quarter which is just a short stroll away from the eiffel tower! BONUS!

so we checked in and we went for a stroll to the eiffel tower. here it is. I have many more pictures in about 50 different angles and orientations but this should suffice:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3370.jpg

ummm we didn’t go up it that day cos there was muchos queues. so we walked up the palais de chaillot/trocadero and went umm, up some street that would lead to the arc de triomphe and the champs elysées, which I didn’t take any pictures of because I was too busy gawping at the people with money shopping at louis vuitton and chanel and what not. we walked down this and ordered a crazy baguette with crazy french ingredients and went to various shops and got to the end near the place de la concorde and generally suffered severe leg fatigue.

anyway, yadda yadda, we walked and walked that afternoon. my googling the night previous I had decided to eat at this famous brasserie in the bastille area called bofinger. ranald, the ABSOLUTE DARLING he is even attempted to book a table over the phone in french but the lady said to just try coming in off the street, no reservations being taken, so we did and we succeeded! let me tell you this, it was one of the finest dining experiences of my life! I had read about 5 billions guardian and observer reviews raving about it and it certainly did not disappoint. I didn’t take any pictures because I was absolutely shitting myself with fear but the inside is gorgeous with a fabulous art deco ceiling (see here (http://data1.blog.de/blog/s/sommer/img/bofinger.jpg))

I will tell you about eating in france because someone might still be interested and – shock – even read to this point in my holiday tale (thanks to anyone who is taking the time to read this btw). wow, they certainly know how to do their history justice. ranald was absolutely bricking himself with fear too because we were sat almost shoulder to shoulder with locals on either side, the whole floor (which is surely a sign of a good restaurant) absolutely packed. it’s strange what they say about “career waiters” here. it’s so true. the waiters are waiters because it is their career, their profession, not to get a quick buck. and they were fantastique!

well, the menu was in french so we couldn’t understand it all and I almost ordered the steak tartare. and they I remembered what, um, steak tartare was and what “froide” (cold) was so it was like PASS! anyway, there are three things with french origins that I am a big fan of so I thought “why not try these dishes in their home country?” so I ordered the french onion soup, steak au poivre and the crème brulee. oh man. now I will never be able to have these dishes again without being disappointed. absolutely DIVINE french soup with a thick crust of cheese and melt in your mouth steak with potatoes dauphinoise and superb crème brulee. ranald had the fois gras, steak and sorbets. we had a 35 euro bottle of côtes du rhône and that was fantastic, too. and coffee and meringues and ohhh lovely. the french people next to us did stare. a lot. I heard that the parisiens were haughty and arrogant and they weren’t in our experience, but they did stare. which was slightly disconcerting but hey. and they were eating quite scary things like this (http://data1.blog.de/blog/s/sommer/img/3gbofinger-2.jpg) that i would have loved to of tried but, yeah, we were scared and couldn’t read all of the menu. but I am really proud that we overcame our fear and had a great time. beautiful restaurant. you really should seek it out. I love being called mademoiselle.

sooo yeah that’s about it for the first day. the next day, however!

we had a tres magnifique breakfast and got to the eiffel tower early to avoid the queues. the lifts were sorta old school. there were a couple of americans in the same bit as us who were all like “LOL these lifts are only about 100 years old and break only about once a month, HOHOHO!” not cool. this is us and my forehead wrinkles going up. ranald wasn’t up for posing for a picture:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3386.jpg

but then I dragged him closer:

when we got to the 2nd floor (which actually has a better view – the top is quite foggy) ranald was all “uhhmmm I don’t know about you but I’m quite happy here if you want to stay” and I was like “NO WAY MAN! we paid to get to the top so stop being a pussy!” (but seriously, it was slightly terrifying. it does do something to your body being up that high). so this is me at the top! une photographe specialle pour pres zount since he mentioned a na§tee et eiffel tower picture. the flash makes me look a lot more white than I actually am:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3381.jpg

we had a hot chocolate and a gaufre aux chocolat on the 2nd floor and I took a picture of the adorable signage on the lifts:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3390.jpg

oooh what did we do then. oh yeah, we went to the ile de la cite. on Sundays they have a bird and flower market outside the cite metro! it was great. there were some bebbe hamsters. they were cold so I was a bit sad for them but yeahyeah I took a picture for the ladiez:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3401.jpg

soo a short walk from there and we got to notre dame, which is fantastic. here is my below-par tourist photograph #1:

inside, it was so fantastic and gothic and I felt as if dracula himself was going to swoop down and kidnap me. and it was Sunday, so mass was on. I’m not a christian, and I don’t mean this as offensive towards any of our catholic friends, but the pomp and circumstance involved in these ceremonies is very attractive even to me. it’s just so.. camp. in a beautiful way. I mean no disrespect. I tried to get a picture of the jesus dudes but didn’t want to disrupt the congregation. anyway, he’s jesus and mary yo:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3425.jpg

here is either the north or south rose windows. gorgeous! and to think these things were designed c. 1260!

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3423.jpg

this is one of the priests performing mass and the other north/south rose window. it’s sorta big, this place.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3441.jpg

another touristy view of the interior of the cathedral. yes, I’ll say again, it’s quite tall. an ideal place to shout out loud by yourself but since that’s generally frowned upon at mass I was like eehhhh. anyway, I bought a rosary and stuff and donated some money for the upkeep of the cathedral (you don’t pay an entrance fee). actually, that reminds me, I need to do a paris gift, purchase or other. we didn’t get to go up the tower and look at the scary gargoyles and maybe jump off it ala amelie cos the queues were muchos long.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3443.jpg

we walked round more of the island and bought cool things. on the bridge between ile de la cite and ile saint-louis there was POSSIBLY THE MOST GORGEOUS PEKINESE PUPPY I HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE HISTORY OF CUTE BABY PUPPIES and a wee french girl was playing with it. here’s an unnecessary amount of puppy pictures:

the dog here is like “WTF?”
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3449.jpg

and then she dragged it along the floor. awww!
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3450.jpg

um, anyway, when I was revived from my faint of cuteness on the floor we went back to notre dame and had an extremely overpriced verre de vin rouge in the shadow of the cathedral:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3453.jpg

ummm ooohhh where did we go then (seriously, I’m sorry if this is boring people but it’s filled my boring hours at work/evening doing this part-time) oh yeah, we shopped some more. in the evening we went to monmartre and sacré-cœur which was, um, pretty scary.

scary BECAUSE, well, the basilica is at the highest point of the city and to get there you have to either walk some hella stairs or take the fenicular railway and at the bottom it was absolutely packed packed packed with a shatload of west africans (yes it is important to the story that they are african, give me a break. and no none of montmatre’s cultural diversity is included in amelie which was set there). anyway they were grabbing all of the tourist wrists and trying to get some bracelet thingy on them. obviously I thought if they managed to get it over my hand I would have to end up paying for it so I was all je suis désolée!! and just marching towards the stairs.

but RANALD, dear polite I don’t want to offend them RANALD was all listening to their bullshit while I was marching up one steep set of stairs after the next when two of them start arguing in really aggressive French while both having a hold of my hands and one says in English “you stole the customer! that was is mine!” and I’m like “ARGGH I’M NONE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS JE SUIS DESOLEE!” and eventually made it mid-hill huffing and puffing like a motherfucker. but ranald was no-where to be seen!

I was terrified I had lost him but eventually he plods up. motherfucker got duped into buying a fucking friendship bracelet symbolising the unity of Africa (or the unity of smelling like a bucketload of weed like they all did) the guy was asking for 10 euros! TEN EUROS! but ranald only had 4 so he managed to get away with that. but the bracelet was impossible to get off so even if you were like “yeah, Africa, united, I’m totally for it but please take this motherfucker off my wrist” you couldn’t.

anyway yeah there was more to it but I was scared and lost and half way up a hill in montmatre and at the top I was in a bit of a bad mood and there was a band outside singing james blunt which only made it worse. you couldn’t take pictures inside but this is it outside:

ummm oh man it’s late. it’s so late. I want to go to bed but I have like three more pictures left! erm. that night we went to a more relaxed place for dinner on the ile saint-louis again where it was a freakin’ buffet paradise with unlimited wine and salad and cheese and meat and mmm. when they said salad we didn’t expect a humongous basket of radishes, tomatoes, peppers, cos lettuce, cauliflower (??!) etc etc. here it is for proof. and our repeatedly filled jug for vin rouge:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3462.jpg

things got pretty hectic pretty quick, and there was some fat dude singing guitar in French (ranald: “that guy is so a paedophile”) who we thought was a local but turned out he’s from bloody cornwall and has just lived in france for 28 years. anyway I took this picture after about 6 jugs of wine but it gives the impression of said ambience:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3464.jpg

we would have stayed longer but the metro closed at 1230. this is me and an exit sign:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3473.jpg

we went to bed and slept off the vin rouge.

the following day we only had a couple of hours to go until we got our flight so we went to la galleries layfayette (superb French harrods-type store) and outside they was an organ grinder. normally he has a cat and a dog in a wee bed with “peace not war” or something on the outside (I mean, if un chat et un chien can sleep in the same bed, can’t we all??!) but today there was just the cat. ranald swore they were drugged to make them sleep all the time. again I fed the guy money to look after the cat and keep it warm. I covet it:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c361/nastee/IMG_3489.jpg

oh man, that’s the last picture (I’m fucking tired and you’re not reading anymore) so I’ll leave you there. we went to the airport and flew home.

I loved it. it was great and I’m considering learning French again so I can brush up my language skillz. it was so embarrassing seeing some arrogant arseholes order their food in English and not even attempt to communicate in a host country. if I can make a little sense it would be great to live there. that of course is a long way off but I’m so in love with the place i’m not surprised I’m jumping the gun.

yeah. j’adore paris. go and visit sometime.

goodnight and thanks for listening!

AWESOME WEEKEND WRAP-UP!

I swear claire is my long-lost scottish relative, I almost see myself in some of her facial features

we even have the same slightly chubby yet oh so darling fingers meant to be kneading dough like some cute old grandmas except our nails are just too damn gorgeous and thus deserve to be painted wonderfully delicious colors that can be properly shown off only when holding a large vessel containing liquor!

Awesome!
Glad you had a great time there!

I just saw the movie with that ^^^ name and realised I haven't been there for like 25 years or so! I've never even been there overnight, just over the day a couple of times, on the way to Spain or somewhere...
In the movie there was some familiar scenes, especially from Pere Lachaise (I don't know where there should be é or è or whatever) and the tombstone of Oscar Wilde all covered with kisses! When I was there it was just put up and so shiny and new! And Jim Morrison still had the statue...

Awesome snaps, and your commentary is always good times.

We stayed in Notre Dame, namely 'Bacteria Alley'. It was wicked. Heaps of crazy shit going on at night, and wicked gothic architecture everywhere. Paris is probably one of my favourite cities in the world, next to Dunedin (ha!). We went at this time of year, too. It's a beautiful time to see Paris.

rands, there's quite a bit of dog shit (had to ventilate my boots on the balcony the first night cos i stepped in a massive pile) cos there's, um, lots of dogs, but actual litter and stuff? hardly any. TELL YOUR MUM TO GO SUCK A COCK OKAY! just joking. just joking : )

pauli, we didn't have much of the sex0rz. it was very tiring. the sex0rz and the walking around all day. oh and the jugs of vin rouge. together they don't contribute to a high "wanna screwwww?" demand of my body.

You mentioned me! I'm flattered.

Isn't it strange how the tower is actually a brownish color? Cartoons lie. The view from the restaurant up there is amazing, also. Did they do the flashing lights at night? I don't remember reading about that. Anyway, it looked like you had a ton of fun.
