Oy, the Quebec issue is such a headache in this country. :(

wow that sounds like some pointless bullshit
i think it's a great idea. it's about time that quebec and the québécois are being officially recognized as completely different from the rest of the country. it could also help to take away any future momentum from the push for sovereignty by the bloc and partis quebecois. if it's accomplished, i really hope that this is followed by native self-government somewhere down the line. i never thought that 'distinct society' fit the bill. they have their own language, culture, history, home grown and very successful entertainment and media industry. quebeckers predominantly watch their own movies, television programming and dramatic productions. and la société radio-canada is doing very well in the province, unlike the rest of the country - albeit the flagship programs - due to the shithead management, ie 'the one'. regardless of the fact that harper has stolen ignatieff's concept and is trying to save face due to his rapidly dropping poll numbers and retarded stances on kyoto/global warming and the israeli/lebanese war, i think it'll only make it easier for ignatieff in the long run and strengthens him as the front-runner in the leadership race, seeing as all three of the federalist parties endorsed it in the house of commons. the question is now, seeing as stephane dion supports it, how long will it take bob rae to get behind it.

I see what you're saying, but there's the worry it'll have the OPPOSITE effect. That being it'll only reinvigorate the separatists' resolve and go for pure sovereignty.
But if it does indeed take away the Bloc's momentum, then good stuff.
I'm all for giving Quebec its own autonomy, but I don't want all-out separation.

That's almost as cute as Canada trying to be a separate nation from the United States.

I'm pretty sure there is more to being a nation than just saying so, "language, culture, history" are part of it, economic life is most of it.
How seperate is Quebecian (?) capitalism from regular canadian capitalism?
quebec is a province, and just like every other province, they have an economy which contributes to the overall economic structure of the country. the proposal is to recognize them as a nation within canada, therefore requiring the constitution act to be updated.
