So we're in the market for new flooring. Tell me what to buy and why.

Does anyone here have wood-covered stairs? I am apprehensive about how safe they would be.
edit: thanks for injecting a bit of life into this thread, jabumbo.

If you're want hardwood, get Pergo (http://www.burnsideflooring.com/images/pergo-room.jpg). My parents got it for my kitchen/hallway at my old house before we sold it and it looked awesome.
If you're getting carpeting, I don't know much about it. I know my parents looked into Burbur (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/146644/2/istockphoto_146644_hi_res_detail_of_burbur_carpet. jpg) because it's cheaper and you can spill shit on it and it's pretty easy to clean up.

I really want bamboo. Really, really. My son has asthma and the carpet doesn't seem to be doing him any good at the moment.

Oooh! My coworkers and I were talking about bamboo floors. I hear they're really cool-looking. You should do it.
As far as carpet, burbur is pretty good for allergies. My brother has bad allergies and that's what they suggested for us.

wood floors are safe enough unless your kid likes to hurl himself up and down the steps all the time.
they arent really slick unless you are wearing socks

all kinds of homes have wood stairs.
pergo is good, but hardwood floors are so much nicer, and you can really tell the difference. my ex and i had considered pergo, but we were doing everything but the bedrooms and bathrooms. we had friends with pergo, and it looked nice in their dining room, but when we looked at the wood samples, there was no way we could do pergo.
man i shouldn't have given him that house.

When you install carpeting you should open doors and windows. Increasing the amount of fresh air in the home will reduce exposure to most chemicals released from carpet.
During and after installation, use window fans and room air conditioners to exhaust fumes to the outdoors. If you have a ventilation system, be sure it is in proper working order. Operate it during installation, and keep it running for 48 to 72 hours after the new carpet is installed.

Months later, I'm still leaning towards getting bamboo.

this is the absolute best money can buy.....it's all made from old growth forests....sooooo environmentally questionable/unsustainable,but can not be topped in quality...my pal is an installer,it's gorgeus stuff......bamboo is the eco-friendly alternative, for sure.....my cousin has installed those little runner/catch strips on her stairs for the her little ones, steep approach requires it pretty much....great fun to chase cats on.....(y)

It wasn't, mister  .
But the tiles reminded me that the playroom/family room needs new carpet as well.
The bamboo *wishes* is for the downstairs living room and the dining room.
