so, last saturday, cort and I were out and about shopping downtown and on our way home from the train, we saw 7 cop cars and an ambulance speeding down the street towards our block. we started walking towards, it, but then chickened out and went around it.

now there's a little candle circle and flowers and things. turns out someone was shot 5 times on the corner two blocks down from my house. the only reason we know is because a guy cort works with's roommate has the same kind of car as the suspect, so the cops had to come and ask him questions about the crime.

but I can't find anything online! nothing! and I can't find anything about the murder that was in the alley a couple months ago!

hi! I want to know why there are murders by my house please!

:(

does anyone know how to find these things out? I went on the police department website and did a search and there were no murders, but 26 crimes within a half mile of my house in the last 9 days:

2 BATTERY
1 CRIM SEXUAL ASSAULT
1 ASSAULT
1 ROBBERY
11 THEFT
3 CRIMINAL DAMAGE
2 MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT
1 NARCOTICS
1 OFFENSE INVOLVING CHILDREN
1 ASSAULT
1 CRIMINAL TRESPASS
1 UNDETERMINED
1 TRAFFIC

you are so not selling chicago as a tourist destination to me right now. what about e.r, the magnificent mile, the white sox, the sears tower, pizza?

p.s. be safe

yeah, actually I searched by my places of business, which are in nice neighborhoods, and there are 25-30 crimes there too. and 112 on part of the magnificent mile! oh boy! mostly thefts.

these are reported crimes though, it's not completely accurate. that's life in the big city I guess.

I wonder if these murders are being kept secret because they're gang related and the cops don't want things to escalate? hmmm.

where are you finding these numbers, anyway

i wonder how much crime there is in my neighborhood

and it's not that i'm making light of your situation, it's that i'm trying to distract you from it

by talking about myself

well, I'm not worried about the robberies and stuff, because that's normal city business and usually happens to people who are being careless. I'm just a wee bit worried about the rapes and murders.

boston has crime too you know! be curfull

BOB, according the internet, there are over 15,000 crimes in boston, right by your house. sometimes even INSIDE IT.

you could try to request some information by going to the closest police department, but a lot of times they won't tell you shit because they're trying to put a case together. technically it's public information, but it won't be released until the case is complete.

if you do go down there, tell them you want to know because you are terribly concerned for your own safety and want to know if there's some sort of serial rapist or a murderer targeting people in your neighborhood. they still aren't likely to tell you much, but if you mention what you saw, maybe they'll let a little bit of info slip.

Where are you getting these stats Sarky?

Chicago is a great place to live, it's a shame that the fun neighborhoods are also the sketchy ones.

It's not like they found a decapitated, naked, and unidentified body on the south side yesterday.

Oh wait...

from the chicago police website. like I said before, they're only reported crimes. THERE COULD BE MANY MORE! or less.

I just don't feel like getting shot. not so worried about the rapist, because I'm really strong and I'd twist that fucker's nuts off. there's a surveillance video of him and he was wearing a white mock turtleneck. yuck. I have to say, he looks pretty normal though.

Every police department supplies a crime log that is accessable to the public. You go to the dept and ask and they will hand you a book. When I worked in TV our city reporter would go down and check it every morning.
