....this isn't exactly "other music," but what the hell.

Let's talk about packaging.

One thing some boxed sets do that really get my goat is when they use just the cardboard sleeves for the CDs. I mean, these things are BUILT to scratch the CDs, practically. I understand that Japanese manufacturers have the little glaccine (?) sleeves inside the carboard sleeves -- that would be much better. All in all, I still prefer a jewel box or at least the foldout packaging with plastic hubs (and NOT so that the CDs overlap, folks-who-did-the-Faces-box).

Another thing that bugs me is when there are virtually no notes or booklets or anything. Motown did a really bad job with this in years past, sometimes packaging things so awkwardly that you couldn't just hold the CD case in your hand and know which track you wanted, because the info was printed on a slip of paper someplace else.

-- at least if you're going to do that stuff, do it like Trojan did -- three CDs with just track title, artist, and writing credit on each sleeve, and each box sold for the price of one CD. That's very cool, in its own way. (They recently jacked all theprices up, though, which is VERY uncool.)

I think the industry needs to embrace vellum!

My favorite packaging of the year was the Peeping Tom record, neat trick,I just opened and closed it a hundred times like a pop up book.

But for a truly impressive package Pavements re-release of "Wowee Zowee" is untouchable. Matador has done a fantastic and consistent job of all the Pavement re-releases,much bang for the buck. An enthusist has hours of art, info and hand scrawled lyrics/notes to ponder for a while.

Hands down, for my puchases, the most disapointing package of the year was Pearl Jam,"Pearl Jam"....since "10" Jeff Ament had spent alot of time and thought composing and collecting beautiful imagery and photography to compliment the sound.

What reall "gets" me is when songs are "out of order" or "without number" on the back of a record. Uncool under any circumstance!

It looks like a sort of slipcase, but you pull this piece out and the CD tray pops out the other side, revealing sexy silouettes and all....
