View Full Version : Kerrang's 50 Greatest Punk Albums

There's so many things wrong with this list. While of course the usual suspects are here (Ramones, Clash, Dead Kennedys and such), there is something inherently stupid about the way 5-star unimpeachable punk heroes are lumped in with inferior pretenders.

Why are there so many Offspring albums in this list? AFI? NOFX? The Vandals? Less Than Jake? Okay, truth be told, I like Blink-182 just fine, but they have no place on a list like this.

What the fuck is up with the ranking? (Rancid is above The Stooges and The Buzzcocks? Oookay) And why is Social Distortion's weakest album on this list while "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" is missing?

The list feels like somebody assembled the collections of a 15 year old (the crappy bands) with his older brother's stuff (the good bands), closed their eyes and randomly chose 50 of these albums and decided: "Hey, this must be the ranking order!"

Proof that Kerrang knows nothing about punk.

How on earth could the Clash not be number 2 at least, and how the hell are Napalm Death on there at all? I'm sure they'll be surprised to know they're a punk band, seeing as they've built their career on speed metal.

So many things wrong....too much to mention.....

See, there's the thing as well. They've put up some stuff that's good, but all these bands thrown together just don't belong together. I mean, I love The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, but it's not something I'd think to put on a list like this. Best Third Wave Ska Revivalists? Okay, that'd fit. But not a list of punk rock albums.

If the magazine has written explanations, I'd like to read it (or maybe I shouldn't?).

Nirvana and Offspring, right?
And it's f***ing america-centric. What about Negazione, Manliftingbanner, So much hate, Spermbirds?

Punk is a load of shit anyway. Not the music, just everything that comes with being attached to the music.

I enjoy Bad Religion though.

Spermbirds?
Cum on your face. Weren't they from Launceston?

No, they come from the original neck of the woods, Kaiserslautern! Their singer Lee Hollis is from the US, though.

No Gang of Four? No Wire? No "Singles Going Steady" by Buzzcocks?

But no, go ahead and list "Dookie" as one of the best punk albums of all time, I'm not stopping you.

I think Kerrang was copying off of USA Today's paper. They were sitting in the back row together, and something was looking shifty.

Yeah, Nirvana is the 'punkest band' in this awesome list

Actually, Nirvana is one of the very few things on the list I would NOT change. They owe so much to the original punk and made it something their own. They're probably punker than anyone on the BBMB. ;)

There is a reason why the Nirvana/Sonic Youth documentary was called "1991: The Year That Punk Broke."

But goddam, just THINK of all the bands that are missing, or would have at the very least would be more welcome than TWO Offspring or NOFX albums:

The Cramps
Patti Smith
Mission of Burma
Gang of Four
The Cure
Husker Du
Sonic Youth
Richard Hell
Wire
The Sonics
Eddie & The Hot Rods
Jawbreaker
New York Dolls
Minutemen
Agent Orange

etc.

Yeah, punk has become something very, very fragmented and it's hard to establish a consensus, but THIS is digusting. I mean, come on.

I saw American Hardcore and told Brett about a punk band he didn't know about and he got super defensive about not knowing them because they were only around 6 months and I said that was no excuse and he got  and I rofled.

True story!

The problem with trying to make a best of punk list is that more than any other genre it's very arguable what exactly a good punk album or band is.

I don't really think Nirvana should have been on that list (not that they aren't a great band) but I think Green Day definitely should not have been on there but to each his own.

I don't have that Discharge LP. Is it top ten worthy? As much as I hate lists, I am slightly troubled when I am missing something from the top ten rock anything list. :o

I probably play that Rancid album more often than anything else on the list.

I've never once read a list of music I completely agree with. I mean really who cares... You know what albums you'd rate and higher or include and so do I. Lists like these tend to generate interest hence sell the magazine, which is the purpose. Whether an album I rate or like, or I feel holds lots of importance or whatever, is high on the list or not makes no difference as to my opinion of that record and what it means to me, which is really all I care about.

Well, that was a whole bunch of bollocks, not mistake.

I mean, no Patti Smith? Offspring higher than The Clash? Sex Pistols at number one? Napalm Death? Raw Power at 18? Blink 182 there at all? Fuck me sideways.
