CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Washington Wizards leading scorer Gilbert Arenas underwent two different surgical procedures on his left knee on Wednesday and will miss about three months.
Arenas had been experiencing swelling and soreness in the knee which he had surgically repaired late last season. After sitting out the past two games, Arenas did not travel with the team to Charlotte and underwent an MRI Wednesday morning, which revealed a cartilage tear.
"I'm just going to sit in my sorrows again. I have three months to (be) back positive again, but right now, it's hard," Arenas said in a posting on his blog Wednesday. "I need to start thinking about longevity in my career instead of just this injury right now. Every great player has missed at least one year."
Team physician Dr. Marc Connell repaired a partial tear of the meniscus and performed microfracture surgery on a non-weight bearing bone on the side of his knee.
"It's not as bad as the injury in April, but it's tough," wrote Arenas, who will begin rehabilitation next week.
"We expect Gilbert to make a full recovery," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said.
The 6-foot-4 Arenas is averaging 22.4 points. The Wizards won both games against struggling Portland and Philadelphia without Arenas and were on a five-game winning streak before Wednesday's game against Charlotte.
"We did win two games in convincing fashion without him, but it wasn't like it was the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs," Wizards center Brendan Haywood said. "Playing without Gilbert Arenas is going to hurt this team."
Arenas began the season by playing as though nothing was wrong, averaging about 40 minutes per game. But after Washington's third game, he said his knee felt stiff, "like a 5-pound weight is on it."
He then had excess fluid drained from the knee for the second time in three weeks on Nov. 7. He played the next night, a loss to New Jersey that dropped the Wizards to 0-4, but had a long conversation with Nets star Jason Kidd on the court after the final buzzer. Kidd offered advice about dealing with a return from surgery.
Arenas stayed in the lineup until missing Saturday's game against Portland, then sitting again Tuesday against Philadelphia. Without Arenas, coach Eddie Jordan said Antonio Daniels will continue to play point guard.
"Every team goes through it, and every team tries to find a way to win on a consistent basis," Jordan said. "We've gotten better at moving the ball."
This whole ordeal has all been a bit new to Arenas - a three-time All-Star - whose only previous significant injury in the NBA was an abdominal problem that limited him to 55 games in 2003-04.
He finished third in the league in scoring average in 2006-07 at 28.4 points, but missed the last two weeks of the regular season and all of the playoffs after having knee surgery.
"Gilbert worked extremely hard this summer to be ready for the beginning of the regular season," Grunfeld said. "This is very unfortunate because he was starting to play at a high level prior to the surgery."
It's another blow to the Wizards, who lost Arenas and Caron Butler to season-ending injuries late last season. Etan Thomas is out this season after undergoing heart surgery, while Oleksiy Pecherov is recovering from a broken ankle.
Haywood said he wouldn't play against the Bobcats because of a sprained left ankle, leaving Washington with only nine healthy players.
"That's the business, man," Haywood said. "Life's not always fair. He's out right now and everybody is down about it. Everybody wishes him the best. Right now all we can do is pray for him and hope he has a speedy recovery."
Jordan wouldn't say whether he'll push management to sign another
it's gonna be blog mania now for gilbert

NEW YORK (AP) - New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd is being sued by a 23-year-old model who accuses him of groping and threatening her at a Manhattan nightclub two months ago.
The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, says Kidd "battered and assaulted" the woman in the Lower West Side club Tenjune on Oct. 10 when he "grabbed her buttocks and crotch on multiple occasions."
"He kept staring at her and then went over and grabbed her butt," the woman's lawyer, Russell S. Adler, said Friday. He said, "She told him 'Get off me! Get away from me!"' before bouncers pulled Kidd away.
Words were exchanged and Kidd grabbed the woman again, pushing her against a wall and putting his hand under her dress, Adler said. When she protested, the lawyer said, Kidd asked, "If we have a fight, who do you think is going to win?"
Adler said when his client tried to send a text message, Kidd slapped her cell phone out of her hand. Adler said she left the club in the Meatpacking District a short time after that.
A spokesman for the New York City Police Department confirmed on Oct. 17 that the woman had filed a criminal complaint against the All-Star guard, accusing him of the acts now alleged in the lawsuit that was filed Thursday.
Adler said he was unaware of any law enforcement action against Kidd related to that complaint. "We are hopeful that the district attorney's office will file charges against him," the lawyer said.
The woman's lawsuit asks for unspecified compensatory and punitive damages.
Kidd's agent, Jeffrey Schwartz, did not immediately return a call for comment.
Another spokesman for Kidd, Scott Miranda, did not immediately return a call for comment, but he said in October the accusation was "a complete fabrication" and that it was "sad that someone would make something like this up."
Gary Sussman, Nets vice president for public relations, said Friday the organization had no comment since the claims involve a pending legal matter.
Kidd, in the midst of a divorce, has denied his wife's charges that he cheated on her and physically abused her during their 10-year marriage. He claimed in his divorce papers earlier this year that he was the victim of spousal abuse.
The couple married in 1997 and were involved in a domestic violence matter six years ago when Kidd was playing for the Phoenix Suns. He pleaded guilty to spousal abuse, was fined $200 and ordered to take anger management training.

"December 24, 2007 — Chicago Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations John Paxson today announced that Scott Skiles has been relieved of his duties as the team’s head coach.
In a statement released this morning, Paxson said:
“This was a difficult decision to make, but one that was necessary at this time. Scott helped us in many ways during his time with the Bulls; most importantly, he helped this franchise get back to respectability. I am appreciative of his hard work and the imprint that he left on our team.”
At this time, no decision has been made on Skiles’ replacement. On Nov. 28, 2003, Skiles became the fifteenth head coach in franchise history when he succeeded Bill Cartwright.
Over the span of five seasons with the Bulls, he compiled a record of 165-172 (.490), and guided the team to the playoffs three consecutive years, highlighted by a first-round series sweep of the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat in the 2007 NBA Playoffs.
In eight-plus seasons as a head coach in the NBA, Skiles owns a career coaching record of 281-251 (.528)."

PHOENIX (AP) - Suns forward Grant Hill was scheduled to undergo an appendectomy Wednesday evening and is expected to miss at least two weeks.
Hill felt ill after arriving at the US Airways Center for practice Wednesday morning, Suns spokeswoman Julie Fie said. At first, everyone assumed he had the same flu that teammate Raja Bell recently had. But after being taken to see a physician, it was determined to be more serious.
He was hospitalized and scheduled for surgery.
Hill signed a two-year deal with the Suns in July and hoped to overcome seven injury-plagued years in Orlando, where he played in about a third of the Magic's regular-season games.
He's been injury free since coming to Phoenix, playing in all 34 regular season games and averaging 15.9 points.

he'll probably loose 2/3 of his institines and his colon knowing his luck and have to shit out his belly button or something.
The Celtics have 30 wins. I hate to say that I try to find them on the tube lately instead of my Heat.
I remember as a kid I used to be a Celtics guy. My Pops went to Ohio State with John Havlicek. I used to watch Jo Jo White, Dave Cowens, Hondo, Paul Silas, Charlie Scott (I met him at an airport once. He was cool and I think surprised that someone recognized him) and on and on. I can remember watching the '76 Celts/Suns thriller. Still the greatest game I ever witnessed.
I went into Mitchell & Ness in Philly intent on buying a Jo Jo White jersey once. It was like $200 so I bought a Mitchell & Ness hat. Anyway, congrats to the Celtics. I might have to pull out my long sleeved Celtics T but then I would be a poser. So I will leave it to TurdBerglar to stand in the spotlight of the green machine.

DENVER, Jan. 15 -- Denver Nuggets forward Nenę underwent successful surgery to remove a testicular tumor yesterday. Results of a biopsy to determine the presence of cancer are pending.
“A right testicular mass was found incidentally and it was managed surgically,” said Dr. Fernando J. Kim, Chief of Urology at Denver Health Medical Center. “Nenę is recovering well and in good condition.”
“I want to thank my fans, my teammates, the Nuggets organization and everyone that’s been supporting me,” said Nenę. “My victory will represent their victory as well. Thanks for being with me in this moment. I will remember all the appreciation. I thank God that we could detect this at such an early stage.”
Last week, an examination by team physician Dr. Saurabh Mangalik revealed the presence of a tumor. Nenę then consulted with Dr. Kim, a graduate of the University of Săo Paolo School of Medicine in Nenę’s home country of Brazil, who performed the surgery.
“As a cancer survivor and someone who has watched his son go through two cancer-related surgeries, I know firsthand the emotions and fears that you feel when someone says you might have it,” said Nuggets Head Coach George Karl. “Our job now is to support Nenę and be there for him as a family. Basketball is at the bottom of the totem poll at a time like this. We just want him to get healthy.”
On Jan. 11, the Nuggets announced Nenę would take an indefinite leave of absence from the team. There remains no timeline for his return.

With the Lakers lurking in the Western Conference, they turned to a team far out of the running for a big boost in the playoff race.
Los Angeles has acquired Pau Gasol from the Grizzlies in exchange for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton and first-round picks in 2008 and 2010, according to multiple published reports.
Gasol, who has spent his entire career with Memphis, is averaging 18.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game and figures to give Kobe Bryant a formidable big man to fill the void while Andrew Bynum recovers from a knee injury.
The move provides salary cap relief for the Grizzlies, as Brown is in the final year of a contract paying him just over $9 million this season.
Los Angeles is currently 28-16, 3.5 games out in the Pacific Division and in the sixth spot in the Western Conference playoff chase.
The Grizzlies are headed in the opposite direction, sitting at 13-33 and in last place in the Southwest.
A source also told the Memphis Commercial Appeal that the Grizzlies have reached a deal to send Stromile Swift to the Nets for Jason Collins. The trade is expected to be finalized Monday, the report said. Swift was sent home from practice Friday, the report said, and will not play Saturday's game against Utah.

The Miami Heat's season has come to this: Shaquille O'Neal may be on the trading block.
Citing two sources close to the situation, the Miami Herald reported on Tuesday that the team has told the center that he should be prepared for a possible deal.
The Herald goes on to report that a trade of O'Neal to the Phoenix Suns for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks has been discussed. One of O'Neal's representatives told the newspaper that they were informed that talks with Phoenix were ongoing and serious.
ESPN.com's Marc Stein reports that this scenario has been rumored for a week, but it will not work without major modifications due to financial restraints.
The Heat have a league-worst 9-37 record and have lost four straight. O'Neal has missed the last six games with a sore left hip. Heat coach Pat Riley said on Tuesday that O'Neal will undergo an MRI.
''We just want to back it up and see, after two weeks, what it shows,'' Riley said, according to the Herald.
O'Neal led the Heat to the 2005-06 championship, but he is averaging a career-low 14.8 points per game, while adding 7.8 rebounds in 32 games this season.
Trading O'Neal would open considerable salary cap room for Miami, which is due to pay the 35-year-old $20 million in each of the next two seasons.

i like watching the suns. its fun basketball. but im not going to kid myself and think the suns are going to get it done in the playoffs. teams in the playoffs play a slowdown game. it kills what the suns do best and eventually kills their hopes at winning a championship. they probably realized they gave it their best shot for 3/4 years with that core. it flat out was not/is not going to get it done.
than there is the thing a lot of people are overlooking here. shaq never came to play in the regular season. he shows up when it counts. now hes back in a conference with that bitch kobe. you think he wants to get shown up by him? with how that whole shit played out. not to mention his wife is divorcing him she resides in florida. who wouldnt want to get the fuck away from a chick divorcing them?
i think nash driving the lane can collect even more assists with little dump offs for monster slams to amare and shaq. add onto that you still cant leave one guy on an island with shaq. i dont care how old he is. you need to help and collapse on him. shaqs still a good passer, he kicks it out to anyone of the suns 5/6 good 3 point shooters and they are wide open to do what they do.

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Suns have acquired Shaquille O'Neal in a stunning, blockbuster deal that sends four-time All-Star Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat.
The improbable pairing of the speedy Suns and the slow but once-mighty O'Neal became official when he cleared a physical exam Wednesday.
The trade, a dramatic move by first-year Phoenix general manager Steve Kerr, signals an unexpected change in philosophy for the Suns, adding a 7-foot-1, 325-pound center who has won four NBA championships but has been plagued by injuries in recent years and turns 36 next month. O'Neal has been out with a hip injury and underwent an MRI exam in Miami on Tuesday. He flew to Phoenix on Wednesday for the physical.
O'Neal has averaged 25.6 points and 11.5 rebounds in his 14-plus NBA seasons.
This season, plagued by injuries and going through a divorce, he's averaging 14.2 points. His 14-year streak as an All-Star choice came to an end this year.
He missed much of the 2006-07 season with a knee injury and finished that year with career-lows in games (40), scoring (17.3 points), rebounds (7.4), minutes (28.4) and free-throw percentage (.422).
Phoenix gambled he will be healthy and more motivated when he moves to the desert.
For the three-plus seasons since Steve Nash came to town, the speedy Suns have been darlings of NBA fans grown weary of the slow style that has prevailed for years. But the Suns have fallen short in the playoffs, never making it to the finals.
Marion, weary of being third fiddle to Nash and Amare Stoudemire, asked to be traded before the season began. He didn't get his wish and, although he refused to talk publicly about it, remained unhappy with his role.
Still, his talents fit well with the fast-paced style that coach Mike D'Antoni wanted, especially with his ability to finish on a fastbreak. He also was the team's best defender, guarding everyone from Tony Parker to Yao Ming. Marion, who has spent all of his 8 1/2 NBA season with Phoenix, made the All-Star team four times, including the last three seasons.
This year, though, he failed to make it, while Nash and Stoudemire did. Marion has an NBA career averages of 18.4 points and 10 rebounds per game. This season he's averaging 15.8 points and 9.9 boards.
The Suns have the best record in the West (34-14) but have not played up to their own expectations. Their interior defense is among the NBA's worst. Kerr apparently felt that without a large presence inside, Phoenix could not combat the big men, such as Andrew Bynum and Tim Duncan, in the playoffs.
With O'Neal on the court, Stoudemire can play his more natural power forward position.
O'Neal's move west adds fuel to the already intense rivalry between the Suns, the Lakers and his old teammate Kobe Bryant.
The trade required a significant financial commitment from the budget-conscious owner Robert Sarver because O'Neal is scheduled to make $20 million this season and $20 million more each of the next two.
Marion makes $16.4 million this year and could opt out of the $17 million final year of his contract after this season. Banks has been in and out of the Suns' rotation the past two seasons.
O'Neal entered this season talking about how he wanted to win at least one more title, saying his "legacy" wouldn't be complete unless he left the game with at least five rings.
The Heat, though, have lost 19 of their last 20 games and have the NBA's worst record at 9-37.

the best part about this trade is marion going to the worst team in league. he was complaining he wasnt the man and felt disrespected and stuff.
well have fun being the man on a team thats hitting more L's than snoop dogg.
I think Shaq will give the Suns much needed muscle in the middle. I am sure Shaq loves escaping South Florida to a team with a viable shot at a championship. He is going through a nasty divorce and the new atmosphere gives him a fresh start in the twilight of his career. The funny thing is that I somehow believe the Suns will win the title. Shaq will come off the bench for 5 to 8 minute stretches. It might just work.

The more I think of this trade the more I think the Heat made out like a bandit. The headline reads.....Shaq traded but when the Lakers completed their trade the headline read...Laker GET Gasol. Hmmmm?
I do think Shaq will do well with the Suns but not my original off the cuff reaction of them winning the title. The Heat can now compliment D Wade on the break and draft a young center next year.

this is interesting. the whole 51 seconds do-over game was scheduled for March 8th between the Heat and the Hawks before their next scheduled game.
that game revolved around Shaq having 5 fouls and the Atlanta Hawks scorers table saying Shaq fouled out with 6. the Hawks were fined (the home team hires the scoring crew) and the game is to be reset from the moment the mistake happened, with the Hawks leading 114-111.
now there will be no Shaq, and I don't see the new Heat players being able to play, since the stats reflect the game played in mid- December...
O'Neal trade raises new questions for Heat-Hawks replay
By CHARLES ODUM, AP Sports Writer
February 6, 2008
ATLANTA (AP) -- Shaquille O'Neal is leaving some unfinished business behind in Atlanta as he heads to Phoenix.
The Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat must replay the final 51.9 seconds of their Dec. 19 game in Atlanta on March 8, but now O'Neal won't be with Miami for the game.
O'Neal was traded to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday. The deal sent four-time All-Star Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to Miami, and thus the new question: Will the two new Miami players be eligible for the replay of the end of the Dec. 19 game?
"The league doesn't know. They'll have to make a determination," Hawks general manager Billy Knight said Wednesday night.
The replay is necessary because the Hawks' official scorer ruled incorrectly that O'Neal fouled out of the game.
The Hawks won 117-111 in overtime. Play will start from the time after O'Neal's disputed sixth foul, with the Hawks leading 114-111.
Knight said NBA officials brought up the possibility of an O'Neal trade when they announced last month that the end of the game must be replayed. Knight said he was told be officials last month that a decision would have to be made about the eligibility of any new Miami players if there was a trade.
The Hawks also were fined $50,000, with commissioner David Stern ruling the team was "grossly negligent" in failing to address the mistake.
The protest is the first granted by the NBA since December 1982, when then-NBA commissioner Larry O'Brien upheld a request for a replay by the San Antonio Spurs after their 137-132 double-overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers the previous month.
The Spurs and Lakers finally finished the game in April 1983, with San Antonio winning 117-114.

Jason Kidd was supposed to usher in a new era for the Mavericks when they drafted him in 1994. Now, he may get a second chance.
The Nets are on the verge of trading the 9-time All-Star point guard to Dallas, according to multiple published reports Wednesday.
The reports differ slightly on the specifics, but the Nets would send Kidd and possibly Malik Allen and Antoine Wright to the Mavericks in exchange for Devin Harris, Devean George, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSegana Diop, Maurice Ager, and a package of draft picks.
The New York Post reported the Nets would receive two No. 1 draft picks, a second-round pick, and $3 million cash. One source told the Post the deal was "all but done."
"Now I think it's pretty much a done deal," Stackhouse told The Associated Press.
Stackhouse added that he may be able to rejoin Dallas within 30 days, an indication the Nets would buy out his contract.
"I feel great. I get 30 days to rest, then I'll be right back," he said. "I ain't going nowhere."
If the deal goes down, it would save the Nets $11 million off the salary cap for next season.
"I think Dallas felt they had to do something," one NBA executive told the Post, referring to the trades that sent Pau Gasol to the Lakers and Shaquille O'Neal to the Suns in the already loaded Western Conference.
Dallas selected Kidd with the second overall pick in the 1994 draft, adding him to a trio of talented young players with Jim Jackson and Jamal Mashburn. The group yielded minimal success for the Mavericks, who won only 62 games the next two seasons with no playoff appearances.
Kidd was then traded during the 1996-97 season to Phoenix, where he led to the Suns to five consecutive playoff apperances before he was traded to New Jersey for Stephon Marbury.
In New Jersey, Kidd lifted the Nets to the NBA Finals in each of his first two seasons, but the team has not made it past the Eastern Conference semifinals since.
Trade speculation has followed Kidd since last February when the Nets reportedly were close to making a deal that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers.
In December, Kidd sat out a game against the New York Knicks with a migraine, a move suspected by some to be a one-day walkout to force a trade or new contract.
At a news conference, Kidd denied those were his motives, saying, "I am having one of my best seasons — why would I want to be asked to be traded? And as a team, we are doing better than last year."
By late January, Kidd was singing a different tune.
"We tried to make this work. We've found out it doesn't," Kidd told ESPN The Magazine. "It's time for us all to move on."
Kidd, in his 14th NBA season, is under contract through the end of next season and will make $19.7 million this year and $21.3 million next year. He is averaging 11.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game. He has 99 career triple doubles.
The Nets are 23-29 and would be the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs if they started today
i think they need to find a way to keep stackhouse

NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA reinstated Chris Andersen from a drug suspension on Tuesday, and the New Orleans Hornets will have the first chance to sign their former player.
Andersen was kicked out on Jan. 27, 2006, for violating the league's drug policy. Since he was "dismissed and disqualified" for a specific violation, he was forced to wait two years to apply for reinstatement.
Anderson's rights belong to the Hornets, provided they offer him a contract in the next 30 days, which they are expected to do. The team scheduled a news conference following practice Tuesday.
"We were always more concerned with Chris Andersen the person rather than Chris Andersen the player and are pleased that he has taken the appropriate measures to get himself reinstated by the NBA," general manager Jeff Bower said in a statement.
"We will now begin the process of getting him back on the court and back in a Hornets uniform as quickly as possible."

Chris Webber is ending his comeback attempt with the Golden State Warriors and will retire after 15 seasons in the NBA.
Warriors spokesman Raymond Ridder said Webber will make the announcement at a news conference Wednesday.
Webber played only nine games with the Warriors before being sidelined by a bum left knee that's hampered him in recent years.
Webber was the most prominent member of the Fab Five at Michigan and played for Golden State, Washington, Sacramento, Philadelphia and Detroit in his NBA career.
Webber and the Warriors hoped that a return to the spot he started his NBA career would help both parties. But he ended up having little impact on the Warriors after signing with the team Jan. 29.
Slowed by the knee injuries, Webber struggled to keep up with the fast-pace Warriors and averaged only 3.9 points per game in his brief stint with the team. He had not played since March 2 because of the injured left knee and had not been around the team as of late. The news was first reported Tuesday by ESPN.com.
The Warriors are in eighth-place in the Western Conference, a half-game ahead of Denver for the final playoff spot. Even if Webber had been healthy enough to return, it would have been unlikely there would have been enough time for him to work his way back into the rotation.
Webber's second stint with the Warriors came to a much quieter ending than his first, which ended with a feud with coach Don Nelson, a public trade demand and finally a deal to Washington.
Webber was acquired by the Warriors in a draft day trade with Orlando in 1993 after becoming just the second sophomore ever to be the top pick in the NBA draft. He won the Rookie of the Year award and made the playoffs in his only season in Golden State.
But he clashed with Nelson and demanded a trade before his second season, and was eventually dealt to Washington in November 1994 for Tom Gugliotta and three first-round picks.
"I probably should have explained myself better, but I'm happy with the way my career turned out," Webber said when he re-signed with the team. "I never would have got to play with Sacramento or Washington on great teams. I never would have got to play for Coach again. I forgave a long time ago. Hopefully I've been forgiven a long time ago, and it's time to move on."
Webber had his greatest success in Sacramento, where he helped revive the Kings and turn them into one of the league's best teams. But they were unable to make it to the NBA Finals, losing in a seven-game series in the conference finals to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2002.
Webber's career began a downward slide after he underwent microfracture surgery on his knee the following year. He was dealt to Philadelphia in 2005 and spent the second half of last season in Detroit with his hometown Pistons.
Webber was a five-time All-Star, who ended his career averaging 20.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists a game.
Webber broke onto the scene as a part of Michigan's heralded recruiting class that arrived on campus in 1991. Teaming with Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson, Webber helped the Wolverines make it to the NCAA championship his only two years in college.
But Michigan lost both times, to Duke in 1992 and North Carolina the following year. Webber was most remembered for calling a timeout when Michigan had none remaining in the final minute of the 1993 loss to the Tar Heels.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland Trail Blazers rookie Greg Oden participated in a pickup basketball game at a 24 Hour Fitness facility in Tualatin, Ore., on Wednesday night, the Oregonian reported.
"We heard about that, and I talked to him today," coach Nate McMillan said. "I let him know he can't do that."
Oden is in the sixth month of his rehabilitation from microfracture surgery on his right knee. He is on schedule to return in time for training camp in October. Oden has been cleared to participate in light drills at practice and the team wants to control his running and jumping.
"I know he is excited to be moving again, but as I talked to him about it he said 'Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...'. And I was like -- 'I really don't care',"' McMillan said. "The thing is, we were surprised. So we let him know that he doesn't need to be there. We have plenty of workout equipment and gym space at our facility."
After Oden took part in two pickup games Wednesday night one of the participants went home and posted an account on the internet. By Thursday morning, word had gotten back to the Blazers, who were in Oakland, Calif., for a game against Golden State. McMillan said he then called Oden.
"Right now, these young guys don't know their value," McMillan said. "That's part of growing up and maturing. In a couple of years he will understand how stupid that was. I understand it, because I've done it.''

NBA commissioner David Stern and NCAA president Myles Brand are expected to make an announcement on Monday afternoon in San Antonio that they have reached an agreement that would make certain that players are in college for at least two years before leaving early for the NBA.
"It's a big step for the owners and the commissioner to say they're ready to bargain in good faith to get the rule passed," said one college coach who wished to remain anonymous. "The NBA is willing to give up something to get this rule passed; we just don't know what it is yet."
The NBA adopted a 19-year-old age limit through the collective bargaining agreement which expires in 2010-11.
If the new rule goes into effect, it would eliminate the one-and-done players such as Greg Oden and Kevin Durant and force them to spend at least two years in college.

DENVER (AP) - NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony was arrested early Monday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, hours after his worst game of the season.
The Denver Nuggets forward was arrested on Interstate 25, police said. He was alone in the car and pulled over for weaving and not dimming his lights.
Detective Sharon Hahn said Anthony failed a series of sobriety tests. He was charged with DUI, then taken to police headquarters before being released to a "sober responsible party," Hahn said. Anthony is due in court May 14.
Mark Warkentien, the Nuggets' vice president of basketball operations, said the team was aware of the situation but declined comment. The Nuggets did not practice Monday and Anthony wasn't available. He's expected at practice Tuesday.
Anthony's attorney, Dan Recht, said his client consented to a blood test, but results won't be available for about two weeks.
"Carmelo apologizes to his fans, the Denver community, his teammates and the Nuggets organization for the distraction this is causing them," Recht said.
The Nuggets (49-32) clinched their fifth straight playoff berth Monday night when Golden State lost at Phoenix. Denver had beaten Houston 111-94 Sunday night to move a-half game ahead of the Warriors for the eighth spot in the Western Conference.
Anthony was held to 11 points on 3-of-14 shooting against a Rockets team that was missing defensive specialist Shane Battier. Anthony did extend his NBA-best streak of double-digit games to 206.
On Saturday, he committed a flagrant foul against Utah's Deron Williams that changed the course of a close game. The Jazz went on to win 124-97.
Anthony was named an All-Star starter for the first time this year. He's fourth in the NBA in scoring (25.8) and is averaging a career-best 7.4 rebounds.
Last season, he was involved in a brawl at Madison Square Garden. After J.R. Smith was collared on his way to a breakaway basket in the closing minutes of a rout, Anthony, then the league's leading scorer, dropped the New York Knicks' Mardy Collins with a punch that drew a 15-game suspension.
In February, Anthony was ticketed in Colorado for driving 25 mph over the posted speed limit. A hearing is set for next month.

The 6-11 forward led the Celtics in rebounds with a 9.2 average (7.3 defensive rpg), to go along with 18.8 points, 1.2 blocks and 1.4 steals. He recorded a team season-high seven blocks against Chicago on Dec. 12.
As part of its support of the Defensive Player of the Year Award, Kia Motors will donate a brand-new 2009 Kia Borrego seven-passenger SUV on behalf of Garnett to Boston Centers for Youth and Families, the cities’ organization supporting the same youth as Kevin’s “Big Ticket Challenge” program. Kia Motors will present a Borrego to the charity of choice of each of the four year-end award winners in 2008 as part of the “The NBA Performance Awards Presented by Kia Motors.”
Garnett helped the Celtics to league-best records of 66-16 (.805) overall and 31-10 (.738) on the road. Boston held opponents to just 90.3 points (second in the NBA) after allowing 99.2 points per game a season ago. Garnett led the Celtics to the biggest one-year turnaround in NBA history as the team won 42 more games this season than in 2006-07 (24-58), surpassing the previous record of 36 games, set by the San Antonio Spurs in the 1997-98 season.
The 12-year NBA veteran became the 32nd player in league history to record 20,000 career points on March 8 against Memphis. Garnett is only the fourth active player to reach this milestone, joining Phoenix’s Shaquille O’Neal (26,296), Denver’s Allen Iverson (22,988) and Kobe Bryant (21,619) of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Garnett received 493 points, including 90 first-place votes, from a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Denver’s Marcus Camby, who won the award last season, finished second with 178 points and Houston’s Shane Battier finished third with 175 points. Players were awarded five points for each first-place vote, three points for each second-place vote and one point for each third-place vote received.
The 2007-08 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award presented by Kia Motors is part of a series of on-court performance awards called “The NBA Performance Awards Presented by Kia Motors.” The awards, which are part of a multi-year marketing partnership between Kia Motors America and the NBA, also include the Most Valuable Player, Sixth Man Award, and Most Improved Player. The series also includes the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month presented by Kia Motors. From worst to first. I think he has a great chance of getting the MVP.
and to answer your question.....The Dream....and he was the NBA finals MVP
Hakeem Olajuwon
During his 18-year career, Nigeria-born Hakeem Olajuwon staked his claim as one of the greatest players in NBA history. Long considered a physical marvel since his days at the University of Houston, his aesthetic and productive play -- highlighted by the Houston Rockets’ back-to-back NBA titles -- earned him a place among the game’s best. "Hakeem the Dream" had a storybook season in 1993-94 when he became the first player to be named NBA MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and NBA Finals MVP in the same year.

i'm shocked that "the glove" only got defensive player of the year once.
It is very difficult for a small guard to get defensive player of the year. Big men can block shots which can turn into a steal and rebound. I think you will find that most of the winners are forwards and centers.

Chris Paul is in another world. I can remember watching him play for Wake Forest against my college in the NCAA tourney. Virginia Commonwealth had them on the ropes but they eeeked out the victory. I thought he might be overrated since our point guard was schooling him throughout the game. Ha! I was way off base. He is impressive.
My memory must be bad. Here is the synopsis of that game. Paul had a very good game and sealed the victory. Maybe I thought THAT DAMN CHRIS PAUL! Instead of he was overrated.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL: EAST RUTHERFORD; WAKE FOREST 79, VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH 78
In three seasons at Wake Forest, Coach Skip Prosser has turned the Demon Deacons into a power in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but his team did not make it past the second round the last two seasons. Yesterday, Wake struggled to beat Virginia Commonwealth in a first-round game. The freshman Chris Paul, the A.C.C. rookie of the year, scored 22 points and sealed the victory with four free throws in the final minute. ''Coach Prosser and my teammates have the ultimate confidence in me,'' Paul said, adding, ''At the end of the game, Coach kept giving me the ball, so I thought it was my responsibility to come through.'' The NetsNew Jersey Nets want to do something, they need to do something and they will do something. The million dollar question is, What? They should start getting a better handle on matters after tonight's lottery.
The Nets, who will have investor/minority owner Jay-Z in Secaucus, are slotted to pick 10th - they have an 87 percent probability of staying there - but if they move up to any of the top three spots their chances of dealing the pick greatly increase. They have been talking around the league and one of the teams they will revisit is Denver, where Carmelo Anthony is available. League sources insist the Nuggets are making Anthony available for the right price. The Nets have spoken to Denver - Nets GM Kiki Vandeweghe drafted Anthony and reshaped the Nuggets roster when he was there.
Vandeweghe refused any comment on talks with the Nuggets but admitted the Nets will look to be active this summer but only in "trying to make deals that are good for your team so you are always talking to everybody around the league. But I am a firm believer in not making trades just to make trades."
So where the Nets pick will add to their summer intrigue. They have their own pick (likely 10) and No. 21 from Dallas through the Jason KiddJason Kidd trade. Should they get No. 1, they would keep it for Michael Beasley of Kansas State. Same with No. 2, assuming Memphis' Derrick Rose went first to another team. If they got three, they might look to deal and a higher pick could be attractive to Denver.
The Nets and Nuggets discussed various parameters of a deal, which would not occur until after June 30 when the full $14.4 million on Anthony's 2008-09 contract kicks in. He is a base year compensation type, which makes trades difficult. One proposal contained "a lot of pieces" including the Nets' pick, Richard JeffersonRichard Jefferson and Marcus Williams for Anthony and Marcus Camby. One source stressed nothing is imminent and talks are still in the infancy stage

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - The NBA will begin fining players guilty of flopping beginning next season.
Although the exact amount of fines has not been determined, the clubs have been informed that a new rule is on the way.
"We have not finalized what the system's going to be and certainly we will before the beginning of next season," NBA vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson said Friday.
"Our objective is to get the most egregious flops, the ones where the player's just flat taking a dive."
Whether suspensions could be a part of the punishments is not clear. The league has an escalating scale of punishments for technical fouls and could use something similar for flops.
Players who flop in international basketball get a technical foul.

Philadelphia just got a lot bigger.
The 76ers and coveted Clippers free agent big man Elton Brand have reached a verbal agreement for a multi-year contract, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.
The report, citing an NBA source who requested anonymity, says the deal is believed to be for five years and in the $80-million range.
Brand, a two-time All Star with L.A., opted out of the final year of his deal with the Clippers last week.
The move must come as a shocker to new Clippers PG Baron Davis, who agreed to sign a five-year, $65 million deal with L.A. last week, with expectations of returning to his hometown to pair up with Brand.
In nine NBA season with the Bulls and Clippers, Brand has averaged 19.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.
has brand really been around for nine years???
marsdaddy
07-11-2008, 05:06 PM
Brand wouldn't have helped the Warriors -- they can't run the 1/2 court, and certainly not without a pass-first PG. Losing Davis sucked, but he did help restore some level of respectability to the W's. Maybe he can do the same for the sad sack Clips?
Last year the W's had their best record in years, won 48 games, and still missed the playoffs -- in the East, they would have been the #4 seed.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Baron Davis just got some help in L.A.
The Clippers have acquired center Marcus Camby from the Nuggets in a move to create salary cap room for the Nuggets.
The Clippers will give up a 2nd-round draft pick in the deal.
"Most of all, I'll miss the Denver community; it became my home. It's where I have my foundation, and I was very involved there," Camby said in a statement.
Camby led the league in blocks last year with 3.61 per game, becoming only the second player in league history to do so in three straight seasons. Camby was the league's defensive player of the year in 2006-07. He ranked second in the NBA in rebounds, averaging 13.1, and put up 9.9 points and 3.3 assists while shooting 45 percent from the field.
He played the last six seasons in Denver after four years with the New York Knicks.
But the superstar trio of Camby, Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony couldn't get the job done, as the Nuggets were eliminated in the first round after being swept by the Lakers.
Camby is set to make $11.25 million in '08-09, followed by $10.9 million in '09-10
what the fuck?

what do you reckon about people going from the NBA to euroleague while still in their primes?
childress, delfino, that spanish dude...possibly landry and west.
oh and brandon jennings [his clips on youtube are pretty good plus he has a high top fade]
none of these guys are stars but at the same time they're all in the rotation and all contribute as solid role players
i reckon good on them - get money and more playing time...plus the season doesn't seem so much of a grind.
ph yeh and i was just watching some ricky rubio clips...looks skilled plus he's only 17
Drederick Tatum
07-25-2008, 10:39 AM
rubio can definitely pass and looks like he can play the passing lanes on defence. however he also looks pretty slow. but I suppose he's still growing.
moving to Europe for some of these players is a good idea. as you said, lots more playing time and those sweet sweet euros. I think Childress has an opt-out clause each year of his contract so he can go back to the NBA. he'll be back and probably be a better player and person because of the time away.
marsdaddy
07-26-2008, 01:11 AM
Decent NBA players moving to Euro leagues is all about the benjamins, or in the case of Childress, cashakenos. He would have not had ANY leverage, had he just taken the mid-level exception available to him from the Hawks. And he couldn't force a sign and trade deal.
Now, he can get some more cash, go to Greece -- not a bad option, I might add -- and help highlight his game. He might just convince the Hawks or some other team to offer him a max deal, if he develops.
Not to mention, with 3 stars on a 12 man roster -- and lots of one-on-one basketball -- the NBA is about to be overtaken by the Euro league game.
Now, what about Rick Mahorn laying out Lisa Leslie? I kept waiting for Rick Flair and Rowdy Rody Piper to show up.

Before Ron Artest arrives in Houston, his reputation is preceding him.
Artest's potential teammate with the Rockets, Yao Ming, commented from China about the mercurial forward's controversial past and expressed concerns about team chemistry.
"Hopefully, he's not fighting anymore and going after a guy in the stands," Yao said, according to the Houston Chronicle. Artest was suspended 73 games for his role in a 2004 brawl with Detroit Pistons fans.
Told of those comments, Artest said Yao had bought into "all the propaganda" about him, according to the Sacramento Bee.
"I understand what Yao said, but I'm still ghetto," Artest said, according to the report. "That's not going to change. I'm never going to change my culture. Yao has played with a lot of black players, but I don't think he's ever played with a black player that really represents his culture as much as I represent my culture. Once Yao Ming gets to know me, he'll understand what I'm about.
"If you go back to the brawl, that's a culture issue right there. Somebody was disrespecting me, so he's got to understand where I'm coming from. People that know me know that Ron Artest never changed."
The Rockets and Sacramento Kings agreed Tuesday to a trade that would send Artest to Houston for Bobby Jackson, Donte Greene and a first-round pick. The deal can't become official until Aug. 14, a month from when Greene signed his rookie contract.
Yao said he exchanged text messages with Rockets teammate Luis Scola after hearing about the deal, according to the Houston paper.
"For some reason, I like (Artest)," Yao said, according to the report. "Because in the games we play against him, I hate him.
"When I text messaged with Luis, we talked about team chemistry. That's only what worries us. We worry about the new attitude to the team. We are adding talent to the team and we need that, but building team chemistry is important. This is not bad. I don't mean he is not welcome to Houston. But a new player always needs some time.
"Also, he was the biggest part of a team in Sacramento. He was a star player. We need more chemistry and more communication."
Artest seemed to take exception to those comments, according to the Bee.
"I guess once Yao Ming approves [the deal], I'll be a Houston Rocket," Artest said, according to the report. "(Yao) probably should've called me first. But at the same time, it's Yao Ming's team.
"Whatever Yao Ming wants me to do, I'll be there. Whatever Tracy McGrady tells me to do, that's how it's going to go down. Ultimately, whatever (Rockets) coach Rick Adelman tells me to do is exactly what I'm going to do."
Artest, who has one year remaining on his contract, said he was looking for a long-term deal from the Rockets, according to the report.
"We've still got to make sure there's still a commitment (from the Rockets)," Artest said, according to the Bee. "That's the main thing, is to make sure there's still a commitment. When I speak to the powers-that-be of the Houston Rockets' organization, we're going to find out how much they really want me there. We'll find out. I'm still waiting to find out if this is just a trade or if this is like a long-term commitment-type thing. I haven't spoken to anybody yet. I'm still waiting."

Williams enjoyed a 10-year NBA career that saw him take the court for three different teams, (Sacramento 1998-2001, Memphis 2001-2005 and Miami 2005-2008). A member of the NBA Champion Miami Heat in 2005-06, Williams started all 23 playoff games and averaged 9.3 points and 3.9 assists for Miami in helping to win the organization’s first title.
The West Virginia native leaves the NBA with career averages of 11.4 points, 6.3 assists, 1.3 steals, 2.4 rebounds while shooting 39.6 percent from the floor, 32.5 percent from three-point range and 81.6 percent from the foul line in 679 total games. Williams finishes his career with a 2.77 assist-to-turnover ratio.
He enjoyed his best statistical season in 2001-02 when he averaged 14.8 points, 8.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds for Memphis. In his four seasons with the Grizzlies, Williams became the club’s all-time assists leader and all-time leader in three-point field goals attempted in addition to being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2002-03 season by Sports Illustrated when he finished tied for second in the league in assists per game.
Originally drafted with the seventh overall selection in the 1998 NBA Draft by Sacramento after one season at the University of Florida, Williams was named to the 1998-99 NBA All-Rookie Team following an electrifying first season that saw him average 12.8 points and 6.0 assists. Over the next nine seasons, Williams emerged as one of the most dependable point guards in the NBA, averaging double-figures in scoring and at least five assists per game in eight of his ten years in the league.
wtf? he has a shitload of game left in him...

Allen Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups, Stephen A. Smith reporting

11-03-2008, 01:39 PM
The NBA season is barely a week old, and there is already a blockbuster trade in the works.
The Pistons are expected to trade Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess to the Nuggets for superstar Allen Iverson, according to multiple reports Monday. The Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News reported on their Web sites that the deal was still being finalized.
A basketball official also confirmed the deal to The Associated Press.
Detroit was determined to shake up its core last summer following a third straight exit from the Eastern Conference finals, but never made a major deal. Two games into the season, the Pistons have pulled off a blockbuster many expected months earlier.
Pistons spokesman Kevin Grigg declined to confirm the trade to The Associated Press, and messages were left by AP for a Nuggets spokesman as well as for the agent of Billups and McDyess.
Iverson, an eight-time All-Star, has averaged 27.7 points and 6.3 assists per game over his 13-year career. The 2001 MVP with the Sixers was beginning his third season in Denver alongside fellow superstar Carmelo Anthony.
Billups, a year younger than Iverson at 32, has averaged 14.8 points and 5.5 assists over his 12-year career, but has emerged in recent seasons as one of the most reliable point guards in the NBA. Billups has also developed a reputation as a clutch, late-game shooter.
McDyess, 34, would add another big body to a Denver front line that has suffered through injury after

this is gonna be really interesting if it actually happens. the pistons are full of all stars that don't demand the ball. this will allow iverson to go full tilt. also the pistons have seemed to lost their edge since ben left. iverson is a firey little shit. maybe this will instill some intensity back into the pistons. who knows if this will be beneficial though. the pistons were all chemistry.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators charged Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban with insider trading for allegedly using confidential information on a stock sale to avoid more than $750,000 in losses.
The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil lawsuit against Cuban on Monday in federal court in Dallas. The agency alleged that in June 2004, Cuban was invited to get in on the coming stock offering by Mamma.com Inc. after he agreed to keep the information private.
The SEC said Cuban knew the shares would be sold below the current market price, and a few hours after receiving the information, told his broker to sell his entire stake of 600,000 shares in the search engine company before the public announcement of the offering.
The SEC is seeking a court judgment against Cuban finding that he violated the antifraud provisions of the federal securities laws, an injunction against future violations, an unspecified civil penalty and restitution of the losses Cuban allegedly avoided.
Unless he is subject to an injunction, Cuban "is likely to commit such violations again in the future," according to the SEC suit.
Attorneys for Cuban in Washington and Dallas didn't immediately return telephone calls seeking comment.
The 50-year-old Cuban also owns Landmark Theaters, a large national chain dedicated to independent films, and the HDNet cable television channel.
He is one of the richest people in the world, according to Forbes magazine, which pegged his net worth at $2.3 billion as of March 2007.

they negated the 10th rebound
—LeBron James never saw this steal coming.
Two days after Cleveland’s superstar recorded an apparent historic triple-double in a 107-102 win against the New York Knicks, the NBA stripped James of one of his 10 rebounds after reviewing game tape. The league said the rebound with 39.3 seconds left should have been credited to Cavaliers center Ben Wallace, who tapped a loose ball that James grabbed.
Wallace finished with two rebounds but probably should have had more as several tip-outs were not scored as rebounds by the stats crew at Madison Square Garden.
A release from the league said: “All NBA games are reviewed to ensure the accuracy of the game statistics.” Wallace benefited from a review in a game at Charlotte on Dec. 6, when a blocked shot originally credited to Zydrunas Ilgauskas was changed to Wallace.
meanwhile, the Lakers traded Vlad Rad for Adam Morrison and scrub Shannon Brown
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—The Charlotte Bobcats sent struggling forward Adam Morrison and reserve Shannon Brown to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday for forward Vladimir Radmanovic.
The move is the third trade the Bobcats have made this season in a roster shakeup under first-year coach Larry Brown.
Morrison was the third overall pick of the 2006 draft and managing partner Michael Jordan’s first major move since buying into the Bobcats. But Morrison had failed to crack the starting lineup and his minutes had declined under Brown.
Morrison will give the Lakers an outside shooting threat, while the 6-foot-10 Radmanovic gives the Bobcats more depth up front.

I thought Howard got jobbed on the dunk title.
They should have just ended the entire contest alltogether when he came out of the phone booth with the Superman cape and dunked on the 12ft. rim like it was 8ft.
All Robinson did was bounce dunks. He pushed off of Howards back to go over him, and the one where he went off of Duhon's back was embarressing.
He got it because he's a Knick. NYC is going to respond to a phone poll better than Orlando would.

it's Yao's team now for the rest of the season and the Playoffs.
I think with Scola, Artest, and Battier they can make up for the loss of this shell of an All-Star.
Add the bench with Landry, Brooks, Brent Barry, and Von Wafer.
They should try and upgrade the pg position before the deadline...

Rockets' Landry shot in leg near downtown Houston (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/6316071.html)
Houston Rockets forward Carl Landry suffered a gunshot wound to his lower leg early this morning in a possible drive-by shooting or failed robbery near downtown, police said.
Landry, 25, was released after treatment at Memorial Hermann Hospital. A team spokesman said he suffered a flesh wound and is expected to be out of the lineup for one to two weeks.
The incident happened in the 3100 block of Leeland, a short distance southeast of downtown, about 4:20 a.m., Houston police said in a preliminary report.
Landry and the rest of the Rockets had just returned from New Orleans after their 95-84 victory over the Hornets. The team's charter flight landed at Hobby Airport shortly after midnight, according to a team spokesman.
According to police, Landry was driving when another vehicle bumped his car. He got out to inspect the damage and two shots were fired from the other vehicle as it slowly passed him, team officials said.
The second shot struck Landry.
Descriptions of the vehicle and its occupants were not yet available this morning. Police have not determined whether the vehicle may have bumped Landry's car in an effort to rob him.
Landry, in his second professional season with the Rockets, had played 23 minutes, totaling 12 points and six rebounds, and played a key role in the Rockets’ win at New Orleans. He is averaging 9.3 points and 5 rebounds this season.

Derek Fisher wins restraining order
Lakers star accuses a woman of stalking him
By Victoria Kim
April 29, 2009
Lakers guard Derek Fisher obtained a temporary restraining order Monday against a woman who has allegedly stalked him for years and changed her last name to Fisher, according to court papers.
The woman, Symone Fisher, has allegedly sent a number of e-mails, messages on social networking sites and letters to the Lakers star claiming to be his wife, even though the two have never met, Derek Fisher wrote in a declaration. She recently began showing up at the Lakers training facility in El Segundo and near his home, according to court papers.
"Her repeated attempts to contact me, her delusional notions that we are married, her angry and hostile tirades against me, her appearance at my place of work and her recent travels near and around my place of residence are all extremely frightening to me," Derek Fisher wrote.
The 40-year-old woman started contacting Fisher during the 2001-02 basketball season, when she had a different legal name, sending him packages of CDs with love songs, according to a declaration by Duran McGregory, his personal security manager. She re-emerged during the 2005-06 season with Fisher as her new legal name, sending him letters saying that the two should get married and that God wanted them to be together, McGregory wrote.

yeah that was unbelievable. plus whenever rondo drives to the hole, there's always a foul called, but nothing when rose goes for a layup. it's pretty obvious that the league wants boston to win, as the bulls are getting called for everything and the celtics are getting away with everything, as our forwards are constantly being hacked and pushed around. oh well, i'm thrilled we've taken boston to six games, with four games so far being very close with multiple lead changes and ties, and three games going into overtime. i think it's been by far the best series of the playoffs so far, as the bulls are really providing a challenge for the defending champs. we're going to have a great team and i'm excited for the future. hopefully we'll win at home tomorrow night and force a game seven. if boston prevails in this series, i can't see them getting by cleveland.
