who is else shocked as hell that both orlando and utah are leading their conferences? Mickey Mouse and the Mormons.

two thirds of the eastern conference is below .500! The east has faltered in the past 5 years with only 5 good teams to compete with the west.

more than two thirds of the west is ABOVE .500! The west is loaded with good teams.

melo leads the league in scoring! He plays for Denver so he has to shoot all the time. He was given the new NBA ball in advance so he has an unfair advantage.

corlos boozer came out of no where! He came from Duke. I'm not convinced he is the man yet. Too slow and clunky for my taste but is a nice roll player.

the bulls were projected to be atleast the #2 team in the east! Big Ben is not a franchise player. Even I knew that....since watching him in his college days. He is great with a great surrounding cast.......and he wants to wear his damn headband.

is kevin martin from sacremento an allstar? Kevin Martin will not be an all-star. People vote and most people have never heard of him.

iverson needs to be traded! To the Heat please.

the union actually filed a grievance claim with the National Labor Relations Board...

how long until the old leather ball returns? no timetable as of yet...

finally Stern realizes he is not the dictator and he responds to players complaints...

anyone who saw that Vince Carter three point buzzer beater earlier in the season saw a dead ball on the rim... and they say it cuts their fingers...

the bulls signing ben wallace was just dumb. they already played great team defense and rebounded well, their problem was a lack of scoring in the low post. so for them to sign wallace to a long term deal made no sense.

SOFT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

dude clearly rocked the shit out of collins' jaw and then got his bitch ass on by backpeddling like he was in the hood about to get dealt with.

the initial collins foul wasnt right but it was understandable. you got starters still in during a blow out and some one wants to dunk hard, you're gonna catch a hard foul.

Nate - you're a 5'9 turnover machine, you're mediocre at best. . As a knicks fan its a real shame that i have to see them make it seem like this 5'9, turnover machine, is a decent player.

carmelo - when chris childs snuffed kobe and gave him a 1,2 combo you could see the bitch in him when he instantly backed up and waiting for players to come in and keep them apart. This was 100x times worse, carmelo for bitch of the year.

yeah the sixers are awful, and billy king is the primary reason. you know you could've had carlos boozer and the #7 pick in last years draft (which wouldve been randy foye or brandon roy) if king had decided to trade iverson last summer? i really feel for sixer fans. it was like this around here when pitino was running the celtics

Report: Iverson to Denver
Marc Stein and Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com report, "The Denver Nuggets have reached an agreement in principle with the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire Allen Iverson, according to NBA front-office sources. The trade, pending league approval, some two weeks after Iverson demanded a trade in Philly, would send Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two 2007 first-round picks to the Sixers for Iverson and perhaps another minimum-salaried player or two. It was expected to be completed later Tuesday barring any snags."

Denver made a very good decision. George Karl is a fine coach and Iverson could put them over the hump. Iverson is good at hitting people with chairs so he can help with any future brawls with the Nuggets (Allen went to prison because he hit a lady in the head with a chair at Circle Lanes Bowling Alley in Va Beach. He spent 4 months in prison before being pardoned by Gov L Douglas Wilder).
The thin mountain air will make everyone dizzy when he does his crossover. It will be very interesting to follow the Nuggets and I hope Allen is happy.
The trade for Philly on the other hand will not produce much in the way of wins. Andre Miller and Joe Smith are role players and I do not see it helping the Sixers although they may add to team chemistry. Who knows? This chemistry experiment might explode and pollute the Delaware river.

Living in no championship city since '83, the Sixers were merely looking for cap room in the next 2 years (Lose A.I's 18 million, Joe Smiths 8 mil. comes off the books and in 2 yrs. you lose webbers 23.)

Plpus the key is the 2 first round picks (The sixers if the finish higher then 7th in the EAST forfeit their pick to the Hawks)

The Sixers were not going to be any good regardless who the got back. The key now is to just not fuck up the June 07 Draft.

I do not fault Philly in the least for dealing Iverson. They did get a decent deal. Andre Miller has shown that he can score 20 pts a night and hand out assists. Joe Smith is a little long in the tooth but can help under the boards. The key is the two 1st round draft picks and they need to make good on those picks. Billy King has not shown that he is a good evaluator of talent. He never put a good surrounding cast together to help AI. The only time they did make a run to the championship with Iverson he took them on his shoulders. I really think they need to fire Billy King. He has made some curious moves in the free agent market....Webber--Van Horn--etc. Paying those guys big $ was a huge mistake.

Isiah Thomas is a no good punk.

When the Celtics beat his Pistons in the playoffs he cried--If Larry Bird were black he would just be another player.

He took over the CBA and ran it into the ground. After he left, the league nearly had to file bankruptcy. He was a total a-hole when he ran the CBA. The owners celebrated when he left.

He goes to the Knicks and sexually harrasses a team secretary. He backstabs Larry Brown and then shows that he is a terrible coach.

Can you tell that I despise Isiah Thomas? The sad thing is that he keeps getting chances to run leagues and teams. When is someone going to realize that he has the intelligence of a piss ant?

January 11, 2007 - The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired guard Earl Boykins, guard/forward Julius Hodge and cash considerations from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for guard Steve Blake, General Manager Larry Harris announced today.
“Given our current situation, we were able to make a deal to help us solidify our roster, both in the short-term and long-term,” said Harris. “Earl gives us added firepower and depth at the guard position. Julius is a young player continuing his development, but shows a high skill level at both the two and three positions.”

Boykins, 30, averaged 15.2 points, 4.3 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 31 games with Denver this season, including a 26-point effort on 1/8/07 against Milwaukee. He ranks sixth in the NBA with a 90.8 free throw percentage and is a career 88.1 percent free throw shooter. The 5-5, 133-lb guard is currently in his ninth NBA season. Not drafted out of Eastern Michigan in 1998, he played for five NBA teams in five years before spending the past three-and-a-half seasons with the Nuggets. He has also spent time with New Jersey, Cleveland, Orlando, the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State, and owns career averages of 9.4 points, 3.4 assists and 1.4 rebounds in 449 games.

Hodge, 23, is currently in his second NBA season after being drafted by Denver in the first round of the 2005 NBA Draft (20th overall). He appeared in four games with Denver this season, averaging 1.5 points and 2.5 assists in 9.2 minutes per game, and nine games in the D-League with the Colorado 14ers, averaging 12.1 points, 9.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds. Last season, the 6-7, 210-lb guard/forward split time with Denver (14 games) and the D-League’s Austin Toros (17 games). He averaged 17.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists while with the Toros, including a season-best 33 points on 3/12/06 against Fayetteville. He finished a four-year collegiate career at N.C. State as the team’s third leading scorer (2,040 points) and all-time leader in minutes (4,258) and free throws made (596).

Blake appeared in 33 games with the Bucks this season, including two starts. He maintained averages of 3.6 points, 2.5 assists and 1.4 rebounds in 17.7 minutes per game. The 26-year-old guard was traded to Milwaukee this past summer on 7/31/06 along with Brian Skinner and Ha Seung-Jin in exchange for Jamaal Magloire. He was selected by Washington in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft (28th overall) where he played for two seasons. He spent the 2005-06 campaign in Portland. Through 220 career games, Blake is averaging 6.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.7 rebounds.

why? i don't get this. boykins has been awesome since iverson has been around and you trade him away for some unproven no-name? i really liked the idea of the two quickest players in the league together both in the backcourt.

troy murphy is solid, but his contract is for another 4 years. he should do ok for himself playing in the eastern conf though, especially alongside a physical frontcourt player like jermaine oneal.

dunleavy just sucks plus he has an awful contract with 4 years to go on it. that's a huge gamble on walsh's part taking this guy on... and he's 26, which means the whole "oh yeah, this kid has potential" angle doesn't really work anymore.

stephen jackson is batshit insane, and i think the pacers biggest motivation for making this deal was to shake things up by getting rid of him.....and i'd say that al harrington is the best player in this deal, so my instinct tells me that GS got the better of the deal.

MIAMI, Jan. 28 (AP)-- Shaquille O'Neal put his police skills to use early Sunday.

O'Neal, the Miami Heat's All-Star center and a reserve officer with the Miami Beach Police Department, followed a driver who allegedly crashed into his Cadillac Escalade and tried to flee the scene, the team said.

O'Neal and bodyguard Jerome Crawford followed the driver for about five minutes. When the driver, identified by The Miami Herald as 18-year-old Emmnueo Cibrin of Tampa, stopped near a gas station, O'Neal approached the car and summoned a nearby police officer.

Police did not release an incident report Sunday night. Miami-Dade Corrections officials said they had no record of anyone by Cibrin's name being booked on a criminal charge, and it was unclear if he was ticketed for any moving violations.

The incident happened around 4 a.m., shortly after the Heat got home from a Saturday game in Chicago. O'Neal was helping Crawford, a team security official, unload luggage outside Crawford's home in Miami's Coconut Grove neighborhood when the accident occurred.

O'Neal, through the team, said Sunday night that he followed proper police protocol during the chase, including pursuing at a safe distance and speed. He contacted police officers along the way, he said.

O'Neal was sworn in as a reserve officer in 2005. He has long said he intends to pursue a career in law enforcement when he retires from basketball.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer has a hairline fracture in his left leg, and is expected to be sidelined a few weeks.

The injury was initially suspected to be a bruised knee, but an MRI and X-rays confirmed the fracture in the top of the fibula. It typically takes four to five weeks to fully heal, the team said Wednesday.
Boozer was injured in a collision Saturday with New Orleans' Tyson Chandler. He missed a game Monday against the New Jersey Nets.

Boozer, averaging 22.1 points and 11.8 rebounds before the injury, missed long stretches of two previous seasons because of injuries.

MIAMI (AP) - Pat Riley will resume coaching the Miami Heat following the All-Star break, an official within the NBA said Monday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because Riley has not formally announced his plans. Riley is expected to announce his return at a news conference Wednesday morning in Miami. His first game back would be Feb. 21 at Houston.

Riley's decision was first reported by WTVJ television and on the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Web site.

Riley left the team on Jan. 3 because of ongoing hip and knee problems, both which required surgery. He had a procedure to repair cartilage in his right knee on Jan. 5, then hip replacement surgery Jan. 11.

Miami assistant coach Ron Rothstein will coach the Heat against Portland on Tuesday night in their final game before the All-Star break.

Players were reportedly told of Riley's decision on Monday.

Saying he was "tired of the pain and the medication," the 61-year-old Riley decided to step away nearly six weeks ago to address his health issues. The Heat were 13-17 when he left, plus had been without center Shaquille O'Neal for much of the season while he recovered from knee surgery.

But now, with six wins in their last seven games, the Heat could get back to the .500 mark with a win Tuesday. And while a 25-26 record is hardly what Miami wanted at this point, the Heat are only four games behind Washington in the Southeast Division.

"We had a very, very rough, very challenging start, mostly due to our faults," O'Neal said Monday, hours before word broke that Riley's return was imminent.

The Heat are not expected to practice Wednesday, while O'Neal and All-Star teammate Dwyane Wade, along with 3-point shootout competitor Jason Kapono, get ready to head to Las Vegas for the weekend's festivities.

The team could practice in Miami next Monday, the day after the All-Star game, but it's unknown if Riley plans to run that session. He is expected to fly with the team to Houston on Tuesday, coach against the Rockets on Feb. 21, then at Dallas — where the Heat won last season's NBA title — the next night. His first home game back would be when Miami hosts Cleveland on Feb. 25.

Riley, who also is the Heat president, resigned as coach shortly before the 2003-04 season, then returned to the bench in December 2005, replacing Stan Van Gundy and postponing his hip replacement. In September, Riley said he didn't expect to need an operation this season, but the pain soon became too much to bear.

Tim Hardaway: I wouldn't play with a gay man
Story Tools:

FOXSports.com
Posted: 2 minutes ago

One week after retired NBA player John Amaechi publically identified himself as gay, retired Heat guard Tim Hardaway said on a Miami radio show that he would not want to play with a gay man.

"You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known," Hardaway said Wednesday, according to a transcript on the Miami Herald Web site. "I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."
Hardaway was a guest on the show and was asked at the end of the interview how he would handle having a gay teammate.

''First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team,'' Hardaway answered. "And second of all, if he was on my team, I would really distance myself from him because I don't think that is right. I don't think he should be in the locker room while we are in the locker room. But stuff like that is going on and there's a lot of other people I hear that are like that and still in the closet and don't want to come out of the closet, but you know I just leave that alone.''

Hardaway doesn't think he's alone in that view, either.

''Something has to give,'' he said. "And I think the majority of players would ask for him to be traded or they would want to be traded...If you have 12 other ballplayers in your locker room that are upset and can't concentrate and always worried about him in the locker room or on the court it's going to be hard for your teammates to win and accept him as a teammate.''

He later apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with Fox affiliate WSVN in Miami.

"Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that," he said. "That was my mistake."

Writers and NBA personalities, including Heat center Shaquille O'Neal and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, have widely praised Amaechi's revelation.

But Amaechi himself said he was overwhelmed by the attention he's received and still believes homophobia is rampant in and out of sports.

''We are much further behind than I'd like,'' Amaechi said, according to the Herald. "People in America and England would like to think racism is over, sexism is over, and homophobia is over, but it's not. My coming out will show that gay people don't all look like Jack from Will and Grace. Some of us are big, athletic men, and that should be OK.''

Amaechi also said he had not heard from a single former teammate or NBA player, but had been contacted by Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers. He also urged heterosexual players to support the cause.

"It's hard to get straight guys to step up," he said. "When men stood by women during the suffrage movement, they were called progressive and bold. When whites stood by blacks, they were heroes. But a straight guy standing up for a gay guy faces discrimination, and that's a big part of the battle we're fighting."

Scottie Pippen planning NBA comeback
Story Tools:

Associated Press
Posted: 2 hours ago

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Scottie Pippen is tired of retirement. He wants to return to the NBA for a chance to win his seventh championship ring.

With most of the league's stars and decision-makers gathering at the All-Star weekend festivities in Las Vegas, the 41-year-old Pippen announced he's hoping for a late-season return to a contending team — preferably in a warm-weather city — nearly 2 1/2 years after he left the league.
"I know that I have the skills," Pippen said. "I think it's sort of been on my mind the last couple of months. It's just about me going out and polishing my skills."

The forward hasn't played since his retirement on Oct. 5, 2004, following a 17-season career with Chicago, Houston and Portland. He won six titles in his famed role as Michael Jordan's wingman with the Bulls, and was part of two gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic teams.

Pippen has been working out in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., during the winter, and he believes the time is right to add his experience and defensive prowess to a contending club, perhaps in Miami or San Antonio.

"This is definitely a stage I can use to get the word out there," Pippen said. "I would only do this for a contender."

Pippen once was one of the NBA's most feared defenders, and his offensive skills were an ideal complement to Jordan's abilities. He had most of his best seasons at Jordan's side, while his scoring averages and general satisfaction with the game dropped considerably after Jordan's second retirement in 1998.

Pippen retired after returning to the Bulls to play just 23 games in the 2003-04 season. Chicago retired his No. 33 on Dec. 9, 2005.

Pippen said he would be open to offers from any team, but also said he would contact a few unnamed teams in hopes of getting the best destination.

The All-Stars gathered in Las Vegas mostly seemed warm to the idea of playing with Pippen - or even alongside him.

"I know it's hard when guys leave the game," Washington's Gilbert Arenas said. "They're sitting there analyzing, and they're getting itchy. If he's ready, he's ready. Maybe I can get another autographed jersey from him.

Miami's Dwyane Wade also liked the idea of a comeback with the Heat.

"I'm already playing with (Gary) Payton and Shaq, two guys I used to play with on video games," Wade said. "To add Scottie Pippen to the mix, that would be crazy."

MIAMI -- Dwyane Wade will try to come back this season. The Miami Heat guard said Monday he has decided to delay surgery and rehabilitate his dislocated left shoulder with the goal of returning for the playoffs.

"My decision for the next two to three weeks is to rehab with the possibility of coming back, but with no guarantee," Wade said. "I'll find out after therapy and rehab how my body responds to things."

Sacramento Kings forward Ron Artest was arrested Monday and excused indefinitely from the team after a woman said he shoved her to the floor inside his home and prevented her from calling 911.

Placer County sheriff's authorities said the woman reported she and Artest were arguing inside the home Monday morning when he pushed her. The argument moved outside when Artest tried to leave in his Hummer, sheriff's Sgt. Andrew Scott said during a news conference.
"It resulted in some pushing," Scott said of the argument. "Mr. Artest had shoved the victim to the floor several times, then he attempted to leave."

The woman threw a pot at the Hummer, shattering its windshield, Scott said. He would not disclose the woman's relationship with Artest but said a 3-year-old girl was inside the house during the incident.

Deputies arrived around 9:30 a.m. at Artest's five-acre estate in the Sacramento suburb of Loomis and arrested him on suspicion of domestic violence, sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin said. He also was arrested on suspicion of using force or violence to prevent the woman from reporting a crime.

"He was very cooperative," Scott said of Artest, found sitting calmly outside the home. "He gave no problems to any of the officers on scene."

Artest, the central figure of the infamous 2004 brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans, was booked into the Placer County Jail and released later on $50,000 bail. His arraignment is scheduled for March 22.

Sheriff's deputies have been called to Artest's home at least once before, but there were no arrests, Erwin said.

Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations, said the team was removing Artest from the team, pending a full investigation.

"The Kings have excused Ron Artest indefinitely from any further participation with the team due to his arrest today for domestic violence," Petrie said in a statement.

Team spokesman Troy Hanson told The Associated Press that Artest had not been suspended and still was being paid.

An emergency protective order obtained by sheriff's officials prevents Artest from returning to his home or contacting the woman until she can obtain a restraining order. Scott said this was normal procedure.

Sheriff's officials said the woman had injuries but would not describe them. She declined medical treatment.

Artest, who joined the Kings from the Indiana Pacers in January 2006, has had previous run-ins with police.

He was at the center of the Nov. 19, 2004 brawl between Pacers players and Pistons fans at The Palace in Detroit. Just when a confrontation between players seemed to be over, Artest, lying on the scorer's table, was hit with a cup filled with an icy beverage. He bolted into the stands in a rage, followed by fist-swinging teammate Stephen Jackson. Artest and teammate Jermaine O'Neal later slugged fans on the court.

Two days later, Artest was suspended for the rest of the season - 73 games, plus the playoffs - in a move that cost him almost $5 million.

Artest and Jackson were sentenced to one year of probation and 60 hours of community service after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault charges. In January, Artest was released from that probation.

Artest has spent nearly 14 months with Sacramento since the Kings acquired him in a blockbuster trade for fan favorite Peja Stojakovic. His short tenure is following a familiar script for the volatile former St. John's star: Initial excitement and outstanding play, followed by disinterest, distractions - and now, more legal trouble.

Last month, county animal control officers seized Artest's Great Dane, Socks, from his home in a gated community about 25 miles northeast of Sacramento. They said the animal wasn't being fed.

Last season, Artest guaranteed the then-struggling Kings would make the playoffs shortly after he arrived, and they surged to the No. 8 seed and an impressive performance in a first-round loss to San Antonio.

Artest's dogged defense and passion fit in well with Sacramento's devoted fans, who adopted him as a community favorite.

This season hasn't been as easy for Artest, who's averaging 18.7 points and 6.6 rebounds while the Kings struggle at 27-32. Sacramento, which hosts Artest's former Indiana teammates on Tuesday night, has battled poor team chemistry and inconsistent play under new coach Eric Musselman.

Though Artest had been a model teammate in his abbreviated first season, he sparked controversy two months ago by indirectly criticizing Mike Bibby's defense. Artest also missed a handful of games with a knee injury that came as news to the Kings - and last month, he sat out of the Kings' visit to Indiana for undisclosed personal reasons.

The Kings were rumored to be exploring trades for Artest but didn't make a deal at last month's trade deadline.

Sacramento has won its last three games, with Artest playing well in road victories over Portland and the Los Angeles Lakers — after shaving the word "Kings" into the back of his head.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A man is suing the Indiana Pacers and the performer who portrays its feline mascot, alleging the 6-foot-tall performer permanently injured him when he was tackled during a free-throw shooting contest.

Nathaniel Jackson, who lives in northern Indiana's Adams County, alleges in his lawsuit that as he entered Conseco Fieldhouse for a March 11, 2005 game against Golden State he was asked to take part in a free-throw shooting contest during a time out.
Jackson, who is in his mid-20s, initially declined, saying he was recovering from back surgery but was assured that "there would be no reason for concern or injury," according to the lawsuit, which was filed March 2 in Marion Superior Court.

After taking part in the free-throw contest, the lawsuit states that Jackson began to leave the basketball court but was tackled from behind by the team's mascot, "Boomer," a 6-foot-tall blue cat with gold whiskers.

The employee who knew about Jackson's back surgery immediately told the mascot about the surgery, and Boomer responded by kicking at Jackson's legs, the lawsuit alleges.

The complaint names the Pacers organization, Conseco Fieldhouse and the unidentified performer who portrays Boomer, and accuses them of negligence.

Jackson's lawsuit seeks compensation for his medical bills, lost income, pain, suffering and "permanent injuries," which are not detailed in the complaint.

In a statement released Thursday, the Pacers declined comment, saying team officials had not reviewed the lawsuit.

"We have just received word about the filing of this lawsuit. Until we can review the details and speak with all parties concerned, we will withhold comment," the statement said.

Jackson's lawyers declined comment on his behalf, saying they would prefer to allow the lawsuit stand for itself.

"Since that was just filed and we're in the midst of litigation and we have been unable to get the case resolved prior to filing suit, I feel the best avenue at this point in time is to let the litigation process continue," said Stanley Rosenblatt, a Fort Wayne lawyer representing Jackson.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Miami Heat forward James Posey was arrested early Monday on a drunken driving charge after an officer pulled him over for stopping in the middle of a road.

Posey had stopped his car on a double-lane Miami Beach road, talking to occupants of other vehicles and pedestrians, police said.
Once out of the car, Posey displayed "bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath," the police report said. The player also was unsteady on his feet and swayed while standing, police said.

Posey was arrested and taken to Miami-Dade County jail.

The Heat declined immediate comment. The team is scheduled to practice Monday morning before flying to Charlotte for a game there Tuesday. It's unknown if Posey would be on the traveling roster.

Posey, in the final year of his contract, is making about $6.4 million this season with the defending champion Heat.

It was the second DUI arrest involving a Heat player in Miami Beach this season. Rookie Robert Hite was charged in January, but that was later dropped when tests showed Hite's blood alcohol level well within legal limits.

The Heat decided after the arrest Hite should take some time away from the team, and ultimately released him. He is playing in South Dakota with an NBA Development League club.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Prosecutors can tell a jury that former NBA star Jayson Williams wiped down a shotgun and jumped into a swimming pool to conceal evidence after a man was killed in his bedroom, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.

Prosecutors want to present that in a retrial of Williams on a charge of reckless manslaughter. The athlete was convicted in 2004 of attempting to cover up the slaying but jurors were unable to reach a verdict on the reckless manslaughter count.
Williams was acquitted of the more serious charge of aggravated manslaughter, with his lawyers arguing the shooting was accidental.

His lawyers argued that it would be improper for the new jury to hear what happened after Williams snapped the shotgun shut, which sent a single blast into the chest of hired driver Costas "Gus" Christofi on Valentine's Day 2002.

In a 4-3 decision, the high court rejected that argument, saying "consciousness of guilt evidence is relevant to defendant's mental state at the time of the shooting for which he is charged with reckless manslaughter."

Prosecutors had told the court that evidence of a cover-up is relevant to whether the shooting was reckless or an accident.

Prosecutors and defense lawyers had no immediate comment on the ruling. The trial judge has told both sides to not talk to the media.

No date has been set for the retrial.

Christofi, 55, was with a group of friends and Harlem Globetrotters touring Williams' Hunterdon County estate following a Globetrotters game in Bethlehem, Pa. He had driven some of the players to a restaurant with Williams and his friends, then took some of the group to the estate.

Williams, 39, retired as the New Jersey Nets center in 2000. He has remained free on bail since his arrest in 2002 and plans to appeal.

Sentencing on the four cover-up counts was postponed until after the retrial. Collectively, those charges carry up to 13 years in prison. Reckless manslaughter carries up to 10 years in prison.

DALLAS (AP) - Losing a tense, physical, emotional game to their top rival and being forced to settle for the third seed in the Western Conference was bad enough for Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs.

Even worse: Duncan is convinced official Joey Crawford is out to get him, with a brawl possibly needed to settle things.

Around the NBA

Game of the day: The Spurs led the Mavericks before Tim Duncan was ejected late in the third quarter. Dallas held San Antonio to 10 points in the final period and rallied for a 91-86 victory. Full story ...

Crawford hit Duncan with two technical fouls just 1:16 apart late in the third quarter of San Antonio's 91-86 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. The second came while he was laughing on the bench and meant an automatic ejection, just the second of his nine-year career.

"He looked at me and said, 'Do you want to fight? Do you want to fight?"' Duncan said. "If he wants to fight, we can fight. I don't have any problem with him, but we can do it if he wants to. I have no reason why in the middle of a game he would yell at me, 'Do you want to fight?"'

The Spurs sorely missed their top player down the stretch, failing to score a basket over the last 6:32 while allowing a 9-0 run to end the game. The loss ended their hopes of catching Phoenix for the No. 2 seed and home-court advantage if they meet in the second round.

While this was a thrilling game between Western Conference powers, the story of the day turned out to be Duncan vs. Crawford.

"He came into the game with a personal vendetta against me," said Duncan, who had 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two blocks in his limited action. "It had to be because I didn't do anything the entire game. I said three words to him and the three words were, 'I got fouled' on a shot. ... That's all I said to him the entire game."

Crawford disagreed, saying that "he was complaining the whole game."

"And then he went over to the bench and he was over there doing the same stuff behind our back," Crawford said. "I hit him with one (technical) and he kept going over there, and I look over there and he's still complaining. So I threw him out."

Crawford spoke to a pool reporter before Duncan spoke to the media. Asked about Duncan not thinking he deserved to be tossed, Crawford said: "That's his opinion. He said nothing when he was walking off the court and he called me a piece of (expletive). Is that nothing?"

San Antonio had won six straight and was on a 12-1 roll. The only loss came against Indiana - another game that Crawford worked and another game that he rang up a T on Duncan.

"I kind of imagine it stemmed from that," Duncan said. "I don't have a problem with Joey. Obviously he's got a problem with me."

Teammate Bruce Bowen, who also got a technical from Crawford in the third quarter, couldn't believe his superstar teammate was tossed, especially for something so mild.

"Do I think it was deserved? No," Bowen said. "For a former MVP of the league, a guy that doesn't curse out the officials like I hear some of the other guys cursing out the officials, I think it was unfortunate that he was dealt this blow."

Said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich: "My beliefs will be shared privately, not with (reporters)."

Dirk Nowitzki and Devin Harris each scored 21 points in a game the Mavericks may have used as their dress rehearsal for the playoffs. They won for the 66th time this season, tying the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks for ninth-best in league history. They also sealed their home record at 36-5, tying the best in franchise history.

Because the only intrigue left to the season is who Dallas will face in the first round and when, coach Avery Johnson rested various top players over the past five games. Not this time, even though he said before the game that he'd be watching players' minutes. Fans realized Dallas was going all out when Nowitzki returned from a long rest early in the fourth quarter, cheering loudly.

Part of the motivation was that the Mavericks wanted to bounce back from a lackluster home loss to Utah.

"We didn't want to lose two in a row at home so we went for it," Nowitzki said. "We kept on fighting to win the game."

His jumper off a rebound tied the game at 86 with 1:15 left. On San Antonio's next series, Manu Ginobili drove past Greg Buckner but Josh Howard was there to strip the ball. Buckner took it all the way for a layup and the lead with 50 seconds to go.

Bowen missed a jumper from the left side on the Spurs' next trip and Jerry Stackhouse made one of two free throws. With San Antonio down by 3, long-distance ace Brent Barry got the ball but had to put up a long, wild heave. Harris made a pair of free throws to cap the last possible meeting between the teams until the Western Conference finals.

The Mavericks knew they dodged a break by avoiding Duncan the last 13-plus minutes.

"It was a big momentum shift," Dallas' Jason Terry said of the ejection. "They needed him down the stretch. They needed him to go to."

Dallas won the season series 3-1, taking the last three. This was the first game won by the home team.

Tony Parker led San Antonio with 23 points. Ginobili scored 16, but the Spurs scored their fewest points since March 17. They had scored at least 109 the previous four games.

Howard had 15 points and six rebounds. Stackhouse, playing only for the second time in five games, scored 14.

Notes: Dallas center Erick Dampier missed his third straight game with a shoulder injury. ... San Antonio has 58 wins with two games left. The Spurs are trying to reach 60 for the fourth time and third in five years. ... Dallas finished the regular season with 234 consecutive sellouts. They drew a crowd of 20,444, some of whom were returning hours later for an NHL playoff game between the Dallas Stars and Vancouver Canucks.

JC suspended for the playoffs! no chance of a fix this year...

Referee Crawford suspended for actions toward Duncan
April 17, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- NBA referee Joey Crawford was suspended indefinitely by commissioner David Stern on Tuesday for his conduct toward Tim Duncan, who contends the official challenged him to a fight.

Crawford, who has worked more playoff games than any active ref, ejected Duncan from a game in Dallas on Sunday. He called a second technical foul on the San Antonio Spurs star while he was on the bench.

"He looked at me and said, 'Do you want to fight? Do you want to fight?"' Duncan said. "If he wants to fight, we can fight. I don't have any problem with him, but we can do it if he wants to. I have no reason why in the middle of a game he would yell at me, `Do you want to fight?"'

Crawford's suspension will last at least through the NBA finals. He apparently will have to meet with Stern after that to discuss reinstatement.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league has not ruled out any penalties against Duncan. The Spurs said they did not yet have a comment.

Stern said Crawford's actions "failed to meet the standards of professionalism and game management we expect of NBA referees."

"Especially in light of similar prior acts by this official, a significant suspension is warranted," Stern said in a statement. "Although Joey is consistently rated as one of our top referees, he must be held accountable for his actions on the floor, and we will have further discussions with him following the season to be sure he understands his responsibilities."

Crawford comes from an officiating family. His brother, Jerry, is a major league umpire, as was his father, Shag.

Joey Crawford is in his 29th season as an NBA referee. He has officiated more than 2,000 games during the regular season and 252 in the playoffs, including 36 in the NBA finals.

But his temper has gotten him noticed before, especially in Game 2 of the 2003 Western Conference finals, a matchup involving the same teams as in Sunday's game. Crawford called four technical fouls in the first 10-plus minutes, leading to ejections of then-Mavs coach Don Nelson and assistant Del Harris.

Crawford also called a technical in a recent game against Duncan, who said Sunday that Crawford has a "personal vendetta against me."

Duncan was called for his first technical foul Sunday with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter for arguing about an offensive foul. Crawford hit him with the second technical 1:16 later after Duncan was on the bench laughing about a call that went against the Spurs.

With Duncan gone, the Mavericks rallied to beat the Spurs, ending San Antonio's chance of earning the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.

Speaking to a pool reporter before Duncan spoke, Crawford was asked about Duncan thinking he had done nothing to warrant the ejection.

"That's his opinion," said Crawford, adding that Duncan referred to him with an expletive. "Is that nothing?"

the Warriors have won five straight against Dallas since last season...

could we have an upset in our midst?

I like this storyline:

Nellie returns to the Warriors, who he guided to their last playoff appearance 13 years ago....

Avery meets his mentor...

Father vs. Son (Nelson vs. Nelson Jr.)

Go Warriors!

NEW YORK (AP) - There are no plans yet for what happens if the SuperSonics leave Seattle. Las Vegas still has hopes of being the possible destination.

Las Vegas' goal of landing an NBA franchise is still alive after commissioner David Stern said Friday he will appoint a committee of owners to study the proposal Mayor Oscar Goodman submitted about how his city would handle a team.
Stern has been opposed to playing in Las Vegas while there is gambling on the league, though he invited Goodman during All-Star weekend to make his proposal and said he would include it on the agenda during the two-day board meeting.

Goodman's letter failed to offer a compromise that would block betting on a potential Las Vegas franchise, but that hasn't yet ruined his chances. Stern said that after subsequent discussions with city officials, the owners asked for the committee so there could be further study "without prejudging anything."

"We're not sitting still because we're forming an owners' committee," deputy commissioner Adam Silver said.

Silver said the committee likely would be established in the next several weeks, consisting of owners from stable franchises with no potential of moving. Besides the gambling issue, the committee would study where the team would play and what a possible relocation fee would be.

The NBA currently has no team to move. But that could change in a year.

Stern said the SuperSonics updated the board on the "disappointing week that they had there in terms of not even a vote on their measure."

Washington's legislative leaders recently announced they wouldn't vote during the current session on a proposal to use county taxes to help build a new $500 million arena in the Seattle suburb of Renton.

The Sonics' lease at Key Arena runs through 2010, but the Sonics aren't obligated to play in Seattle past next season without a new arena deal, and owner Clay Bennett said after the failed vote measure that he doubted they would do so.

Oklahoma City would seem to be the likely destination if the Sonics do move, since Bennett is from there and the city strongly supported the New Orleans Hornets over the last two seasons. But nothing was decided this week.

"There's no current Plan B," Stern said. "There's a willingness by the team to meet with any and all who are in Seattle."

bad idea. las vegas is probably the absolute worst place for any professional athelete.

I have to give YoungRemy props for his Warriors. I was flying back to Texas from Virginia this weekend. I was talking to a guy in a Mavs hat at 8 am. I mentioned that Golden State went up 2-1. His face became very crimped and I thought he was going to tear up.

I am a Heat fan so I will now crawl into my cave and hibernate until next season.

heh... theyre not my team, but they were my pick to upset the Mavs...

1. I hate the Mavs
2. the warriors had their number all year
3. My Rockets, even though theyre tied 2-2, have their backs against the wall

I would love to see a Rockets/Warriors matchup, but both teams still have alot of work ahead of them to get out of the 1st round

Wow! This is a huge upset if they can finish.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Baron Davis banked in a 3-pointer from midcourt at the halftime buzzer Sunday night. While his Golden State fans nearly deafened their team, absolutely nobody in either uniform seemed terribly surprised.

Davis has something in him these days that even the mighty Dallas Mavericks can't match -- and now his crazy, carefree Warriors are one win away from a historic playoff upset.

Davis had five of his 33 points and two key assists in the final 3 1/2 minutes, and Golden State roared from behind for a 103-99 victory to take a 3-1 lead over the NBA's best regular-season team in their first-round playoff series.

dunk the fucking ball, you are SEVEN FOOT SIX

but I think they can pull this one out in 6 or 7 and with a matchup against GSW, make it to the Conference Finals

I'm afraid you might be right...

I want the Warriors to do it so bad... Oakland will be nuts on thursday, and their leaders need to keep their cool and keep playing the same way they have been this whole series...
