So, the work christmas party is tomorrow night at the chamber of commerce. It's gonna be gay gay gay. It's open bar! huzzah!
anyway, my bosses don't have much money these days on account of them opening another location, so I think they're going to do something different than money for a christmas bonus.
I hope it's not an enrollment in the jelly of the month club. :( wait, maybe I do.

Do they really still do jelly of the month clubs? I thought that was just from that one crappy movie with that dude.
I don't know how much is standard for bonuses, actually. I'm hoping maybe $200, who knows how much or little it could be? I'm just happy to be getting extra money.

I've never gotten a christmas bonus. But I don't expect one since I think Christmas is pretty much a joke now a days.
But I am going to a Christmas party at this place:

yeah, i've started to get less and less precious as i get older about christmas and days off and what not as they are all starting to slowly melt into the same routine. except with more food and drink. and bad music on the radio.
i only get paid for the hours i work, yah see. fucking temp contract. i'm trying to get out of it but my employer is dragging their ass. and for them to be like "LOL SUPRISE! university's CLOSED for two weeks" i'm like "meh. whatevs. i'll take extra shifts at my other, more highly paid job then". and i am. here's to libraries that are open most of the year (y)

Yep...open bar. Supposedly there were 10,000 people at last years, but it was at a different place, and that number seems highly exagerrated, but I have been told by a couple of people that it isn't too far off. If its not...its no wonder AOL is heading down the shitter.

I agree to a point. I consider myself agnostic, my dad's athiest, but my mom's Catholic. So if I had to work on Christmas and I wouldn't be allowed to see her, I'd bitch about having to work that day because I know how much it means to her to be together on the holidays and stuff. I don't wanna make my mommy sad during the holidays. :(

No, I've got insurance. But not great insurance, and I never go to the dentist, so after forty years, I've got, like, nine little cavities all over. They're not deep so they've never bothered me so I just never noticed. So if I want nice fillings and not that crappy silver stuff, I have to pay $400. :( Insurance covers the rest.

FO' HUNDRED DOLLAS! Damn. The dentist I work for is damn cheap, 9 small cavities with porcelain would be around $170 after deductible, with "average" PPO insurance.
But if you have a PPO, the best thing I can say is wait until January 1 to get your work done because if anything happens to your teeth Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2007 your deductible will already be covered. Sooo many people come in to get cavities done before the holidays and I'm like "No! Wait till next year!" and they never listen and end up paying an extra $50 next year when they didn't have to.

$350, it'll take 2 weeks and you'll have to use a tray at night, it'll whiten up to 60%.
But like I said, my dentist is cheaper than most, so $400 would be acceptable.

...you think I should shop for a better price? I assumed that if it wasn't some boutique dentist, it would all be about the same.
You could shop around and ask them for the prices they offer without insurance (they'll usually give you a range of how much fillings cost), and then find out through your insurance how much they cover for "basic" coverage (most of the time it's around 80% (so you'd pay 20% of what the dentist's price is) but yours may be more or less, depending). From there, you can figure out the range you could be paying at other places.
I work for a Vietnamese dentist, which is why he charges less. Most people don't trust foreign dentists, though he does an excellent job. I like him better than my old dentist. So if I were you, find an Asian dentist office because they work damn hard and charge less because they place a lot of emphasis on honor and respect. Or maybe that's just a broad stereotype. Couldn't hurt though, right? ;)

My one friend had bleaching covered in her plan, and I had NEVER seen that before. I mean, why would they cover the color of your teeth? It has nothing to do with health.

the teeth whitening strips don't work that well? Anyone use them?
abcdefz
12-22-2006, 12:44 PM
No -- not the insurance. The dentist throws it in with the cavities. Same as the deep cleaning. I'm starting to think maybe that's why the price seems high; he's covering the other stuff, too.

Crest has a kit that's pretty darned good. It's about $25-$30 at Target, about $40-$50 retail, I think.
QueenAdrock
12-22-2006, 12:48 PM
I talked to a Crest representative once, she said the strips whiten your teeth pretty well, but it takes longer and it's only about 30-40% whiter. Crest actually has a brand they sell to dentists which whitens about 50-60% because they're more potent and can't be sold over the counter. And they're more expensive.
But yeah, I'd go with the shit you can get on the shelf. It's only like 30 bucks and they will whiten, just not as much as if you got it professionally done.
God I really need to quit working at the dentist office. :(

My wife's mom works at a college that has a dentist school. My wife tried it and I thought that it worked pretty well. Definately not a bleach job. But very good. I'd say it was around 30.00. I enjoyed asking her questions when she was using the strips.

12-22-2006, 12:56 PM
I always thought if you used the strips, you might as well cut them in half length-wise. Because they're meant to wrap around to the back of your teeth, but shit, no one sees the back of your teeth anyways. That way you'll have twice the supply!

I did that just to get more of the lower front teeth. The lower teeth strips are, for some reason, not as wide as the upper.

I don't think I've ever gotten a Christmas bonus. I thought the assassinations and Watergate ruined those for the rest of us?
I've never whitened my teeth, and really don't understand the facination with teeth whitening, other than another way to be sold something you don't need that isn't natural.
Dentist in Northern California seem to be the most expensive in the country, based on the research I once did on behalf of an insurance company. Probably something to do with rent, liability insurance, and cosmetic procedures.
