What does mixing look like? Similar to recording? Or listening?

mixing's definitely more of a listening thing, but the real giveaway was the fact that they were using the console/board. there was, as far as I saw, primarily listening and a whole lotta knob tweaking on the console (that big board on the left wall that's blinking all the time). though i don't doubt some minimal use here and there, I haven't seen a whole lot of work on the console, which is the soul proprieter of mixing. that's where the mixing really takes place.

recording traditionally takes place through the board, but in modern times often does not. from the looks of it, the boys have been recording soully digital on this album (evident of the minimal use of the console), which, similar to "hello nasty", was recorded much in digital and then mixed through an analog console (according to Mario C). I am a sound engineer by schooling and trade, and what I saw today was extremely distinctive of a mixing session.

They weren't mixing today. It was equipment repair. Horovitz and Diamond went home early, leaving Yauch to watch the technician work on the equipment.

how do you know this?; from fact or opinion? i suppose if it was an equipment assessment, then that can only mean they're preparing to mix (through the board, that is), if they haven't begun already.


on a sidenote (being a sound-nerd), does anyone happen to know what type and model console they have in oscilloscope? Is there any article (like that "building a better beastie" article from HN era MTV) that overviews the equipment they're set up with at their studio?

With the way technology is these days, they don't have to be in the studio to record their parts. They could be a world away to accomplish this feat.

i remember yauch for a moment put on headphones and listened to something they had made. his head was nodding a little to the music. hopefully i didn't just imagine that. i forgot what time this was.

I don't know, Mark already said in an interview that he's been in the studio, and they still have a few months before the summer gigs start. I expect the album to drop in conjunction with the shows, sometime in June/July.

10 til after 6 on weekdays. sometimes the camera will go offline and all you'll see is a white screen with controls but you just have to keep checkin' 'cause it'll usually come back on...eventually. it's off during the weekend.

The Beastie Boys' Mike D is also feeling his band's new one, which they just finished recording for a June release. "Some different s---" was his tight-lipped description of the album's sound; when I asked if Beastie fans should expect any cool guests, he tartly replied, "Nobody cool, only uncool." How about a title? "I don't know if I'm allowed to disclose it, but we do have one. I wrote like 12 titles last night."
