i'm in this secret santa thing (no, not THIS secret santa thing, i've already figured out what i'm doing here), and i drew someone that i know absolutely nothing about. i don't talk to him much, actually i don't particularly like him, but anyways i have no idea what to get him. so i wanna get something neutral and thoughtless that anyone would be happy to have. any ideas?

i definitely don't want to get him a gift card or anything like that, that's cheesy. it's gotta be an actual thing. a thing that an average 25 year old law student would like. that's under $20

Booze. A token for 1 free hug. I guess they both go together.

And if you want to be really clever, Law & Order DVD. You will be a hoot.

CD isnt a good idea. Book maybe, if It's one of those coffee table books and you can find out from someone SOMETHING he's into (ask around - if not get one of those neutral picture books or something) Dvd's not a good idea unless you know what he's into, Mug is.. Meh. Unless it's really freakin cool.
I'd go with the booze, if he's over 21 who doesnt love a nice bottle of absolute?

book or dvd or cd or whatever would be hard, because it would require a specific knowledge of his tastes. i dunno, i don't wanna get him anything TOO good, like i said, i don't really like him much, i'm pretty happy with our current "say 'hi' in the hallways but otherwise don't interact" relationship and i'd hate to upgrade it

booze might work. a mug, i dunno, a mug might SOUND lame but if you must know i'd actually like one, because i don't have one and i'd like one (to my secret santa if you're reading this: don't give me a mug, i won't be surprised by it now)

his nickname is "nicky noodles" (don't ask because i don't know), maybe i could get him a shitload of ramen noodles. but what if he doesn't like ramen noodles? and to be honest, that idea is borderline cute, and i don't think that's appropriate

he wouldn't appreciate it now, but he will when he goes interviewing -- one of those leather-esque document holders that he can put an extra copy of his resume in.

or

a bottle of alcohol

that's actually not a bad idea, not a bad idea at all. i'm sure i've talked about this but i can never be sure who remembers; my school's program is such that after your first year, you spend half your time working for a law firm as an intern and half your time in classes. he's one of the two guys in our 13-person class that picked the earlier rotation, so he'll be going on interviews sooner than the rest of us. that is not a bad idea at all, actually...

...thing is i'm not sure exactly what you're talking about. could you link to an example or something? and does it cost under $20? not only do i not want to spend more than that, but we're actually not allowed to

like this (http://www.decorativepillows.biz/images/padholders/simple-padholder-black-open-2000.JPG). you can't take your resume and some paper in a manilla file. and i'm sure there's plenty you can find for around $20.

dorothy devotchka, i've been drinking and i'm on a roll, and can likely solve any problem right now. sorta like beer muscles, only using my brain. is there anything i can help you with?

actually, I need to get a present for one of my bosses, that's sort of why I looked in here. He's an investment banker type person. he's short, gay, nerdy, dresses conservatively and pretty plain, likes jason mraz and puts his head on your shoulder when he's drunk, and is perhaps one of the most adorable men on the planet.

so far I can't think of anything. I got a yo-yo. I got my other boss an old school pencil sharpener and some paper birds you can cut out and hang from the ceiling. I got my manager some buttons with ladies on them and a mermaid that expands in water, and I got the other girl I work with a set of fake tattoos including the alphabet so you can spell anything you want out (she likes fake tattoos). I should probably get her something else too.

but I don't think a yo-yo would cut it.

does he have a palm pilot or a cell phone that's a blackberry or palm platform phone? if so, he may like an accessory for that. it's nerdy, yet metrosexual, thus not typecasting him.

oh yes! he certainly does! I don't know what kind though, I saw it yesterday and it seemed really small, but it had tons of buttons.

those things are awesome. you can get games for those online, or covers, or a fancy stylus, etc. add something like that with the yoyo and you win for both the eclectic and good gift categories.

p.s. i have tetris for my palm pilot. tetris rocks. and, he can share it with friends that have a similar item by beaming it to them.

probably not. even though palm pilots have been around for a while, palm / blackberry phones have not, so i don't even think you could find blinging stylus' there.

what is the plural of stylus?
