Who remembers which interview it was, and what magazine, where one of the Boys talks about sampling during License to Ill where rolls of tape were strung across the room in order to create a continuous loop of Led Zeppeling or some other band?

I'm finishing a paper for a seminar and want to make a point about sampling prior to the use of digital techniques. Essentially, my idea at this point in the paper is that sampling is not a means of subsidizing production costs and avoiding hiring studio musicians because it always involves the imposition of other costs in terms of time. Having to figure out how to loop an analog tape for a Led Zeppelin sample is one example; figuring out how to chop a sampled beat 100 separate times in order to synchronize it with another sample is another example.

Oh, and the paper is due on Monday.

Found it. For those who are interested:

"On Licensed to Ill, we didn't even have any samplers. So the stuff that's looped, we actually made tape loops. We'd record the "When the Levee Breaks" beat onto a quarter-inch tape, and then we'd make a loop and that tape would be spinning around the room, dangling on mic stands, going around in a big loop. And then, in order to layer that with something else, we'd have to actually sync it up, physically." - Adam Yauch, excerpted from The Skills to Pay the Bills (2005) by Alan Light
