my neighbour's son just dropped by to tell me that his mum has been admitted to hospital with a collapsed lung and suspected tumour. she has an extremely high level of calcium in her blood, the like of which they've never seen, and which indicates cancer.
i'm thinking this must be smoking related as she practically embodied cigarettes, if that makes sense. smoking was a big part of her life anyway.
:(
I've never had a cigarette between my lips.

The youngest person in my family to die from smoking was in his mid-thirtes, and the youngest I have ever known at work was 26.
It's amazing how something can sneak up and bite you like that, when you least expect it. We all stood around discussing it for ages, in the car park though, as you can't smoke in the building.
I've given up now, though.....

yeah, it's scary. i've never had someone so close to me be in such a state from smoking. i mean, i'm guessing smoking 40 a day has something to do with her illness, altho her husband went mad about 3 years ago and they've since split up. maybe it's stress related :(
her son is fucked up :(

Aww, that's sad. My grandma died from a smoke-related illness when I was two so I never got to know her. :(
I just don't see the appeal of it. You smell bad, you taste bad, you have medical problems. For what? A stress reliever? Come on people, if you're that stressed, go masturbate. Don't kill yourself slowly.

It's a drug; you get addicted. Pretty simple.

i guess her point is that it's weird that people even bother to try it with all the information so "in your face"
there are a lot of addictive drugs that 99% of people would not touch.. how a reasonable person would feel differently towards cigarettes boggles the mind.

my grandpa had lung cancer. non-smoker.
her lung cancer may be strictly smoking related, or it could have just been a factor. it's really hard to tell, and since she is a smoker, no one will look any further if she does have lung cancer. there are many smokers who never have any serious health issues and die of natural causes in their 90s, and others that get cancer or emphysema and the like. and there's as many non-smokers who get the same types of cancers and other illnesses. regardless, it is a good idea to stop. currently, i'm too in love with it to do so.

Vices are for the weak.
Smoking is retarded.

it's likely that the collapsed lung is due to her smoking. the cancer hasn't been confirmed yet.
apparently my grandfather had a collapsed lung and they fixed it and i never even knew about it. he never smoked but did spent a lot of his youth down coal mines.
thanks for the sympathy QAR. i'm a bit shaken up. the hospital's just across the park and i keep thinking of her lying there on a ventilator spaced out on drugs. i'm going to make her son some food, then at least i'll feel like i'm doing something to help :(
and yeah, smoking is retarded.

sorry, venus, i didn't realize you were close to your neighbor. where we currently live, no one is close to their neighbor, if they even know who he/she is. at my old house, i wanted my one neighbor out of my business because they were jesus freaks who were trying to convert everyone.

my neighbor was just taken to the hospital this week, he's a hardcore smoker & is around 60-70 years-old, i think he's had a stroke before or he's been to the hospital because of smoking reasons & now he's in there again, but the guy won't quit, i don't think he's even tried to quit(n)

oh yes... i just heard (from my other neighbour who is actually a really good friend of mine) that she has a few weeks.
this poor kid (this lady's son, who's 18) has just experienced his parents going through a really nasty divorce and now his dad (who has a psychological disorder) is going through all the family savings. his mother has fortunately been lucid enough to change the will so that everything she has goes to daniel. unsurprisingly, she doesn't want to see her ex.

That's a really shitty situation for her son, I hope he finds the strength to deal with it.
