if that mocking bird don't sing,
momma's gonna buy me an iPod thing
anyway. I don't really want her to spend too much, so maybe she should go the ebay way? her boyfriend can guide her through, as she's pretty clueless.
recommendations?

Depends on how much music you want to store. Unless you really want a portable jukebox with a library of all your music on it just go for the 2gb or 4gb Nano. My MP3 holds 6gb which is about 2000 songs, mine has about 500 of my favourite songs on it and it's kept me very happy for an hour each day on the bus.
Dunno how much a Nano is in the US, they are less than £100 in the UK now.
Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Apple-GB-iPod-Nano-Black/dp/B0007Y79B2/sr=8-2/qid=1165870682/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-7308659-0034403?ie=UTF8&s=electronics) has a 4GB ipod nano (black) for 179.99. It's only $20 off of the regular price but I think it'd be perfect for you. I have tons of files but I only find myself listening to a few albums per month on a regular basis. If there's any free space I throw a bunch of mid 90's R&B jointz on there.
So if you think you'd roll like that then you should check it out. I'd avoid eBay because who knows what kind of condition your ipod would be in when you get it. Used up batteries suck also.

my zen micro's dying. :( the headphone jack is screwing up, and i've heard that's a common problem in them. so i'm asking santa for the zen vision m (60 gb for 300, that's pretty good in my book). woot.

I also have problems with my headphones on my Zen Touch. I've had it for 2 years now, and about 6 months ago the scroll thing stopped working (well, it only scrolled down) and recently the headphone plug just seems to be too loose and I have to hold it all the time or it won't make any sound. (n)
When I'm buying a new one it's still gonna be a Creative though. I-pods are the devil.

mmmhm. it's really not difficult at all to use a zen with a pc, and i'm sure that it'd be easy with a mac too. screw ipods. overpriced, crap batteries, they'll come out with one that's more cost-effective and with more memory in 3 months and you'll hate the one you have.

i have the same exact problem with my zen micro, i have to constantly wiggle the headphone plug around, the sound keeps going in and out

I had the same problems with my headphones, what seemed to work was to tape the bottom of the cord to the thicker part of the cord. I didn't explain that well. Ok, tape the cord to this thingy (http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/images/products/prod_100230.jpg)

mine too. i did get my use out of the warranty though. i accidentally dropped it once, and they sent me a new one, no charge (and i read the warranty, and they're technically not supposed to do that for accidental droppings, so it worked out well in my favor).
can't complain i guess, it was a good device while it lasted. i think i had it like 2-3 years? and it still technically works, you just kinda can't walk anywhere with it

Have you guys tried new headphones? My first pair died, and now I'm sorted with some newies. But I'd be wiggling the headphone jack to all fuckery until I made the change.
Go Creative.

would you believe that i haven't? i've been meaning to forever and ever and i just forgot about it. i'm gonna try it right now.
edit: didn't work
i didn't think it would, because i've used the headphones i use on the zen for other things, and they only ever fuck up with the zen. i just assumed the problem was with the jack. now i know i was right
still, thanks for reminding me

I'm lucky mine has been going since December 2004. It gets used every day. Once I dropped it, and the songs kept skipping. That sorted itself out. And then the scroll wheel stopped scrolling down, and that sorted itself out. Occasionally I'll skip a track forward and it'll pause instead and vice versa. But that only happens every so often.

yeah, it's definitely not the headphones. i can't use earbuds anyway. it's the jack itself.
i've had mine since christmas of last year and have put it under really heavy use. just last week it started freaking me out - i had it sitting on a desktop, locked even, and it started skipping songs and raising and lowering the volume. ON ITS OWN. haunted!

I think one of the worst things about those jacks (if they're like mine) is that they get heaps of crud in them. Mine has the extension port for the remote control, and it's all crudded up.

haha i know, huh? here we are talking about how great and how awesome they are and oh btw they fuck up all the time
haha. i think i got mine july of 2004 (it was a birthday present) so it's lasted that long, at least. it's only been fucking up in the past few months.
do ipods generally last longer? i don't know, i have no frame of reference. really though, until the headphone thing started happening, it really was a fine little product. just don't drop it.

The fuck ups are so miniscule compared to the usage I've got though. I mean, every day, trekking about uni or the city. Even driving sometimes. If it died, it would have something like Chariots of Fire played at its funeral, and not the cop-out anthem My Way. Of course, those songs would be found in the <Unknown> folder cause they came straight off Limewire lol lol
haha
yeah i used the crap out of mine for a while. i listened to it at work when i worked over the summers and winters, so for like a few months straight, i'd listen to it for a straight 8 hours a day. then i'd listen to it when i walked to class and shit during school.

Seriously.
Do zens even work with macs?
I have a 60GB ipod and it's full but I'm a freak. The 30 GB would be fine for most people. If you want video you need the full blown 30GB ipod. If you don't want video and you don't want many songs you can get the nano but it seems more cute than useful to me. I didn't think video was a big deal but I do enjoy having that option when I'm on an airplane--I travel a lot.

if you're into tiny things & want a little bit of music to hold get the new shuffle its really small & holds around 200-300 songs & is the cheapest, it cost $80
the nanos is ok for an average listener imo but i think the nanos break easier than the other ipod models
the video one (the ipod i want) seem cool cuz of the video photo & of course music, i think they're around 20-30 GB which is like 7,500-10,000 songs (around there or maybe even more) or 40 hours of video
RBK & i are fighting on the zen & the ipod, i think the zen is too bulky but thats just me, it prolly holds more stuff though

I have a Gigabeat 40g and I love it. It has so far survived numerous drops on the floor without any problems. It's not the flashiest by far but does the job and is sturdy enough to cope with my clumsiness.

but at least they gave me my money back when it died, and my sister is giving me a free nano. I would never buy an iPod...but im getting it for free so we'll see. Im currently using a mini Creative Zen..i think its great! but the best i ever had was a 1gig Flash iRiver..just perfect!

i have an ipod mini. old skool.
i don't care if it's apparently uncool to have ipods. i care that when i press play it will start the music and that's about it really. the headphones are seven shades of shit, though. so i bought some fancy sennheiser ones.
i have a killer altec lansing ipod dock (http://www.alteclansing.co.uk/proddata.php?partno=E3298&desc1=InMotion%20IM7) that my flatmate broke recently and DIDN'T TELL ME! he was "scared of the wrath of claire". well, of course i would be angry in that my flatmates have absolutely zero respect for other people's property and that includes basically all of the multimedia elements of our house that belong to me which is the widescreen tv, the laptop, the ipod dock, the wii and the wireless router.
the part you put the ipod into won't close.. you know, that sort of spring action you have on cd players too that you can press down on when closed and it will, uh, open? i'm shit at explaining it but that's the problem. so mofo can pay for the proper action from altec lansing. ugh.
um, anyway, yeah, ipods. my ipod dock is hella loud. when it works.

At the time I didn't like that there weren't any zen docks around, that and it was always packing in. I do miss that mega battery life, though.

hey, you creative nerds, those zen thingies don't even work on macs. SO THANKS FOR NOTHING!
actually, I've done some research on MP3 players that aren't iPods to see if I could get a better deal. so far, it seems like many of them don't work with macs. so, iPod it is! also, all the software and junk is already on my computer.
I'd like the video iPod, but it doesn't really matter to me. I'll take 2GB, that's like 500 songs. no use spending a ton of money on it. this is kind of like the time I wanted a CD player and my mom got me a portable one with a car kit. but this was before ESP was pretty standard, so it skipped all the time. It was a good little workhorse though, I had it for 4 years. It was $100 at the time, the early 90's I guess. ha! so I don't think shelling out over $150 on the thing is really worth it, when there are sure to be more upgrades.
I DO NOT WANT AN IPOD SHUFFLE. yuck! I want to be able to pick.

12-12-2006, 10:44 AM
 You cannot "unshuffle" a Shuffle playlist?
Dorothy Wood
12-12-2006, 10:46 AM
no, I think you can make a playlist. I don't know, it just seems like a waste of money if you can't see the songs.
might as well just listen to my janky old $17 CD player that goes, "HSSSSSHHHHH" really loudly in my ear every 10 minutes or so.
na§tee
12-12-2006, 10:48 AM
i don't even think you can make playlists for shuffles. i think when you plug it in to your computer it just retrieves a number of random songs each time, jumbles them up and spits them out. naaahhhh. don't want any of that business. the guardian voted the shuffle as one of the "chavviest" gadgets out there for some plethora of reasons. this was probably one of them.
na§tee
12-12-2006, 10:50 AM
ooohh no, it wasn't the guardian. it was shiny shiny and tech digest (http://www.techdigest.tv/2005/12/shuffle_takes_c.html). i love shiny shiny!

I got one of these after my iPod Mini died. Had it about 18 months now and no problems. It definately has a better sound than an iPod and I care more about sound quality than brand image. The software is a bit clunky though. And it looks a bit gay (mines silver).
