I want to get a book for my mom for Christmas and I need some assistance.

She's really into all that CSI, Law & Order, forensic psychology/murder mystery/investigative bullshit. She enjoys Stephen King and James Patterson (I think that's the dude she's been reading a lot lately).

Help. :o

Body Double form Tess Gerritsen might be good then. My parents like that kind of books as well and I bought this book for them last year. they really liked it.

P.S.: I like your avatarpic. Radiohead rules (y)

well, my favourite book is called The Master and Margerita. it is prolly the best book russian book of the 20th century. essentially it's a love story, but there's a lot more to it. it's a great read, but if you have a good understanding of soviet times you'll appreciate more

I'm reading that right now. It's good, but I don't really think it's exactly what she's looking for...

yeah i know, but i love it. how are you liking it so far? i found some parts, mainly the parts about pontius pilot, are a bit weird at first, but they make more sense later on in the book. i've read it 7 times now i think.

At first I was like, wait why did the book just randomly go into this story about pontius pilot. I didn't catch that the devil was going into a story about him because i'm special like that.

I'm liking it good so far.

I don't really read anything in the style she seems fond of.....but I'll bet she could get on with any of these titles for various simalarity's or common themes in the style of writing she seems to like....

"Coldheart Canyon" Clive Barker

"Life of Pi" Yann Martel

"Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned" Kinky Freidman

There is a brand new hardcover book out by James Patterson. Sorry I can't remember the title.:o

Also, there is a new Michael Chrichton (speeeling) book about genetic testing and biological mutation.

did she read/see the davinci code? did she like it? if she did, get angels and demons, by dan brown. it's the same kind of thing, and it's a pretty sweet page-turner. i did not see the ending coming at ALL, either

Dan Brown wrote Angels and Demons, as well as the DaVinci Code and Digital Fortress.

If you're going to get a Dan Brown novel, get Angels and Demons, it's better.

yeah, i dunno, i read that and the da vinci code, and i liked them, but not as "omg i didn't know that about the world" type things, they're just pretty good adventures, with suspense, and plot twists, and all that. they're fun, is what i'm saying

It's called Cross. That's probably what I'll end up getting her, but my concern is either that James Patterson isn't actually the author she's been reading a lot, or that she already purchased it herself.

She did read the DaVinci code, and if memory serves, she enjoyed it.

Thanks for the input so far, fags.

Try some stuff by Patricia Cornwell - my mum loves them murder mystery shits.

oh yeah i agree they're a good read. i'm just saying they're absolutely crap facts in them. what dan brown does is put some facts which are true, but alot of stuff that is fictional, which is why the da vinci code was so successful. people actually thought 'well i know this and that is true, so that must mean there's people out there who are relatives of jesus. fuck, what a great book!'

but i started uni doing a course in quantum physics, which is the stuff they talk about in angels and demons, and i can tell you that yes CERN exists and they have 27km machines that can accelerate particles close to the speed of light, and yes anti-matter does exist, but the figures in the book is completely wrong. at the time of publishing, there was only 9 molecules of the types of anti matter they're talking about in the book, yet the amount in the bomb contains 1.5 times 10 to the power of 23 moles of this anti matter. Plus the way they make this anti matter totally defies the law of e=mc^2

in a quantum physics comparison, teleportation does exist thru quantum entanglement, but we're at least 500 years away from walking thru one portal and walking out anthor that's hundreds of km's away. it's also like saying, yes Vlad the Impaler aka Vladislav Dracula did exist which is true, but he was also a real life vampire.

i'm just saying that the reason his books are so successful is because he puts in a few facts and people believe that the rest is true. if people understood that it's not realistic, i guarantee you that there is no friggin chance that it would've been one of the biggest selling books of all time

The new Thomas Harris is out. I only read the first two books (Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs) but it might be worth checking.

Haha, great book.

Actually he has a new one out, again I cannot remember the title; it's about genetic mutation etc kind of like JP but no dinosaurs. It's about people being mutated.

Actually that sounds like a shitty version of JP...

It's unfortunate how so many popular authors seem to recycle themes and basic premise.

I loved the episode of Third Rock from the Sun where they try to fit in by doing everything the "average americans" are doing so they read Grisham novels.

"My John Grisham is about a young southern lawyer fighting the system"

"So is mine!"

"Mine too!"

At which point they all swap books and continue reading.

no, Id go see the movie with you, totally!

I only partake in fluff in the movie form, there are too many good books in the world that take longer than 2 hours to indulge in for me to fuck around with fluff on paper

patricia cornwell books as recommended by freebasser are a really good idea. the main character, provided you choose the proper series, is a medical examiner, but she also investigates shit and gets mixed up in dangerous situations. BUT, since they're in a series, you would want to start at the beginning.

if she likes books in a series, john sandford writes two different series that are awesome. the prey series has lucas davenport, and the others have a character whose last name is kidd.

anything by harlen coben is really, really good, and they don't follow a series.
