who the fuck is this dork? I was listening to the local "music for guys named Gary" classic rock station and they played this peice of shit called "Major Tom" which apparently was this dorks version of a sequel to Space Oddity. Did David Bowie okay this crap beforehand?

In the early 1980s, there weren't that many American music videos yet. So MTV played the same ones over and over. And MTV played oddball european artists. Like Peter Shilling (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Hs2AQwDgA), Nena (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzCU1Kc8ic8) and Falco (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTlGuhH7HN0). They made the Brits look like geniuses. Then American musicians all started making videos and it actually got worse.

Young people seem nostalgic about the 1980s, but they could be truly horrible.

being born in 1980 I can honestly say I do not remember a fucking thing about the 1980s, and never identify myself as an "80s kid" considering the vast majority of that decade I was too little/stupid to understand what the hell was going on.

i dunno, i like the one i posted (and i know/think you're talking about the other falco version, not the after the fire one). for some reason one of my memories as a kid is seeing that video on TV and thinking it was hilarious, and then i saw it again a few months ago and it was all nostalgic

i mean you're probably right, the other video is probably "better" but this one is just so lame it's great

edit: and i know that it technically came out 2 years before i was born, but i saw it on some MTV flashback special or something i think

true well the other kommissar video version isnt up on youtube anyway

our videos look cheaper than american ones since we dont spit out much money for such things but they are usually not THAT cheap looking like the one you posted!

I like the Schilling song.

Unlike so much music nowadays that I hear, it tells a cool/quirky story just for the hell of it, with cool/quirky music. And he can actually sing (*I* think so anyway).

The way corporate-controlled radio and media is now, if released now that song would never make it to your audio system of choice, because it doesn't fit into the neat little "genre compartments" or approved by the carefully chosen focus groups so beloved by the number-loving bean counters that control most of the music industry.

Another (funny!!) song from the 1980s that would be poo-pooed by those accountants which I also like a lot: I Wanna Be A Cowboy. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL5zQ6qHlUQ)

Oh.My.God. I forgot all about it!

When I worked nights, my coworkers and I used to get off work and hit this dive bar when it opened at 8 a.m. and play that song on the juke box and dance in a very dramatic and stupid way. "Yippee Yippee Yah Yippee Yah Yo Yo." I remember very specifically doing it on a snowy Christmas Eve morning and then going home to my parents' house. :o

There are some hard core drunks in dive bars at 8 a.m. :(

There's a station here that plays a lot of 80s music and late at night they will play the more oddball - but cooler IMO! - music from back then & they played that one recently. (y) Also there are more and more 80s comp CDs at music stores that remind me of that time - I feel kinda old after seeing them. :( There *was* a lot of crap back then like the pro reviewers say, but like any decade there was also a lot of quality stuff too, pop and otherwise.
