i went today for the first time in ages and even tho i thought my teeth were ok, it turns out that i have the teeth of someone 10 years older than me.

i have to get 2 filings and have to wear a night guard which is like a hard plastic mouth guard thingy. apparantly i grind my teeth in my sleep. there's no metal involved so that's half good news

the bad news is that i have to get my wisdom teeth pulled within the next year. the worse news is that one of the wisdom teeth is fucking up the back molar it's next to, and i have the choice of going under a local anaesthetic for 5 hours and having a root canal and lots of other crap done to it. or i can have it pulled out. i'm really not phased about get it pulled out. the first operation with the root canals and stuff cost a bit of $1500. my parents have a family health care plan but i'm not 100% sure how much is covered by it. i didn't tell them about that, only told them that i need 2 filings and a night guard.

so yeah, my teeth aren't great now. not as bad as the stereotypical brittish teeth but they're still not the great. at worse i think the operation could cost $1000. not sure how much it is to get my tooth removed tho.

so i have a question, would you be willing to have a tooth removed instead of lots of procedures if the difference in cost was pretty significant? it's a tooth right at the back of my mouth so unless a girl gets her tongue right in there i dont think anyone is going to notice, lol

and aussies, do any of you know how good the rebate from Medibank Private would be from something like this?

i think that wisdom teeth might be covered not sure.

as for the root canal i am fairly sure that would be classed under major dental, basically if you only have regular dental cover (this is what i have) then some major tooth things are not covered. bear in mind that "covered" in my case means i get about 60% or so back. (well i get more, but i have blue ribbon hospital cover with extras (but not major dental) and the extras entitles me to $100 to spend on any health related thing i want)

easist thing is to call medibank private and ask. basically you'll need some money. health insurance i think works on a yearly budget sort of... space the procedures out and you can claim a bit each year (this is what they did with my braces).

but yeah, call them.

i've seen my mum go through getting a root canal. it wasn't pretty. i'm fairly sure she has a fake tooth there now instead of the tooth that was worked on for so long. they probably aren't all that bad...

personally, i love the dentist. i really do. not only do i adore my dentist and the dental nurse, i love the feeling of extra clean teeth once you leave. i don't even mind getting fillings. i go every 6 months so i'm on top of any tooth problem there is. if your teeth are unhealthy, it can lead to general unwellness and infections and really bad things. teeth are important!!

heh....

ONLY THE FILINGS MAY HAVE COMING FROM DRINKING! but now on it's no more softdrink, high calcium white russians instead of high sugar smirnoff blacks and more flossing from now on. i also have a general medical check up on thursday to which i'm looking forward to find out what else could be wrong with me. i found out the other day that i'm 13kg's more than what i thought i weighed so after thursday there'll be some big changes in my life

so claire, you've a had a night guard for 5 years then? is it just weird having it in your mouth? i dont think i could get use to it.

amy, thanks for the tip (y)

i've had it for five years but i gave up wearing after the first, oooh, 2 weeks. it sits in a drawer being ignored now.

it was a bit weird, insofar that your mouth sorta of can't completely close so you end up drooling like a mofo if you lie at the wrong angle. what was worse for me was that it hurt sooo much at the front teeth - it was extremely tight, so it was a bitch to take off in the morning.

i would definitely be wearing it if it wasn't so tight. that's why i have to go and get another one made - and this time i'm going to opt to have it fitted on my lower jaw instead (normally they give you a choice of which row of teeth you want it fitted on - i'd go for the bottom fo sho as it would help with the whole drool thing and it's less painful if it's really tight).

one day my teeth will shatter if i don't get this sorta out soon and i live in FEAR every night because of it.

maybe i should take a sexy family alb pic of me wearing it, haha! now that's entertainment.

oh that'd be hot, hahahaha. bottom row of teeth it shall be for me then. i'm not liking the idea of involuntarily drooling(n)

I would have the tooth pulled. Between semesters next year I have time to go under and not lose any money/study. And I know at least 2 of my molars are fucked from the wisdoms. Pull em. It's just teeth.

while my dental nurse (jessica <3 ) would encourage no soft drink whatsoever, she says its ok if you drink one quickly with a meal or something, but for gods sake don't sit there and sip on it for an hour. and try to floss at least 3-4 times a week. regular upkeep of your teeth will cost you less in the long run.

god, i'm such a dentist nerd.

root canals and pulling out a tooth are just about equally painful, with the wisdom pullout occasionally hurting more like a motherfuck (see all the wisdom tooth threads. theres many. they were in pain.) bright side: you get goooood painkillers.

i kept 2 of my wisdom teeth! i keep them in my dresser. :p

Having your wisdom teeth pulled isn't that bad...I didn't use any of my pain meds and saved them for recreational use later
