It's weird that the TT5B era has already ended, since it's so fresh in our memory. The O-Scope cam signifies the beginning of the "----------" era, a whole new beast. BTW, what would we consider the time following the the HN touring and before the TT5B pre-production? Does that get chalked up as HN, TT5B, or simply Hiatus era? Or does it even deserve a title?

Between HN and TT5B you have the HN tour, SOS, the DVD, BS2000 and In A World Gone Mad...

scratch that then!

so we can just refer to the short periods of time when nothing was going on as "the lost episodes" or simply shrug when that time is mentioned *shrug*

It was a nice "break time" for them.

Two things happened during that era that I'm sure will effect them for their entire lifes.......(Jam master jay passing away and 9-11)

If they didnt have the break period, maybe they would have been to burnt out to tour again in 2004.

the tt5b era isn't fresh in my mind i didn't have MTV in 04' so i never heard of them till 05'! all i remember seeing in 04' by some group called "Beastie Boys" was some annoying commercial promoting their album i had no clue at the time who they were:o

Considering the Sounds of Science and the DVD were the focus, I crown it "The Retrospective Era".

i was hoping they'd do another TT5B style album as a follow up, but seems as though they're using the instruments. Which isn't in itself a bad thing, but i would like to have seen them explore the TT5B sound/angle more and see where they could take it.

Yeah, I agree with Roosta. The working title of the new disc is 'Don't Take Umbrage Yo', apparently. Don't know what to make of it. :D

I remember (and allow me to don my geek hat) that I posted something along the lines of TT5B being the perfect time-capsule for me, of a moment of great uncertainty, and that the group captured the spirit of wanting to have fun with serious things always on one's mind. I remember the occasion because Yauch quoted me, and said thanks. And I still feel the same about the album.

I don't really dig Shazam and We Got The, but I can deal. Open Letter aged real well, and although it doesn't always translate with crowds, is still an amazing track. Check it Out is such raw hip-hop, it's also got a very musical approach in the delivery, the way D weaves in and out of the beat, Yauch rides it perfectly with "Workin on the Record yo, so just stay patient", it's a song that couldn't ever have the beat changed, because nothing about it sounds accidental. These are the least of my feelings about the songs.

I think it may have suffered from coming out at the wrong time, which is pure bad luck. If it had dropped in 2002, 2003 at the latest it may have gathered a bit more heat. By 2004, although the sentiments were still appreciated, people's mindsets were shifting back to trivialities. The big issues weren't easily digestable any more for many. Time to Build could have been scorching in 2002. As it was it's still one of my favourites of theirs, period.

If you had two pages in a magazine, dedicated to teaching people about their albums, tt5b would sit with LTI as 'The Great Dividers'. The smarter fans hate LTI for being too childish, while tt5b gets heat for being "boring", or just "rushed" (and I'm paraphrasing there). The consensus albums are all obvious, it's just these two which seperate fans. Both are classic, each with their own weaknesses. It's just down to what you prefer, I guess. The big thing about TT5B is that it's clearly a more personal album to the group, and that's why songs like Triple Trouble are great tributes for the guys to make, that don't always score with the fans. Let the songs be admired for what they are, though. The thought is there.

Sorry about the long post. I had been organizing BBQ supplies.

^No problem...sometimes when I organize the kitchen utensils I tend to have some lengthy posts too.

Nice job KP.

I gotta scrub, man. I'm fucking cursing these greasy utensils, real loud. There's some old ladies over the back fence that can hear me going "Fucking Wire Brush! Picks up everything! Try fucking letting go! Wire piece of shit!"
