Do you floss before or after you brush? I've been flossing after but it has been recently been brought to my attention that I've been doing it all wrong.

I also know a guy who uses this as a pick up line in bars.

You're supposed to floss before. That way, any crud that's knocked loose but not removed with the floss will be brushed away. Plus, if your gums bleed, you can spit all that out along with the toothpaste and rinse and all of that.

lol gross

^see, I totally get that...but I still do it ass backwards.

PLUS...I have a permanant bottom retainer that is a BITCH to floss through, I have to use these threader thingys.

i have a really nasty tasting rinse that i got last time at the detist to help prevent gingivitis

i try and use that or the hydrogen peroxide/mouthwash rinse regularly to help clean out the rest of the garbage

but in either case, i don't do enough of anything

HEY! i don't have poor dental hygiene! and i'm not nasty!

and i think you can have good teeth just brushing twice a day. my teeth are FINE and i certainly do not have poor oral hygiene because i brush my teeth properly and use mouthwash.

seriously the "lack of flossing = a nation of bad teeth" thing does not add up. we're a nation of bad teeth because we eat too much sugar and don't even bother brushing.

i've did a scientific bit of research with my flatmates and we know exactly one person who flosses among all our friends. it's just not a big deal here. if it was a big deal and made a profound difference, i'm sure we would all have been taught at an earlier age to do it.

But I'm tellin' you, once you do floss you'll realize why it's kinda gross when you don't. At the office, there are people who never floss and the doctor does it for them and the crud that he prys loose smells like total ass because it's been rotting there for a while.

It also depends how tight your teeth are too. If your teeth are very close together, you need to floss more often. I found that out the hard way when I was little and had a lot of between-the-teeth cavities. :(

na§tee
12-18-2006, 03:23 PM
it's just a cultural difference. it doesn't make america "right" and us "wrong". it doesn't mean a whole nation of people who don't give two shits if they floss or not and, actually, you'd be hard pushed to find floss in your average corner shop, have bad, nasty mouths.

in france all the women have special soap for their vaginas. IZ TRUE.

12-18-2006, 03:26 PM
Nah, it's not right vs. wrong, but I'm tellin' ya the crap that can get stuck between your teeth that brushes can't catch is pretty nasty and can rot and do some serious damage. I've seen a lot of people who brush every day and don't floss and get cavities and didn't know why. If you don't get cavities and don't floss, more power to ya, but if you do...that's probably the answer.

.. i bet the french wimmins are all like "OMG THEY DON'T HAVE SPECIAL PUSSY SOAP.. GROSS! VULGAR VAG!", too, but hey.

edit: didn't see your reply. no, i don't get cavities. i'm not denying that it may be better for my teeth but it still doesn't mean that i have poor dental hygiene.

I'D USE THAT SOAP! Is it specially formulated or what? If it's specially created for the vag, that sounds kinda neato.

the vagina is an ecosystem in itself...and its self cleaning. Per my gyno you're not supposed to shove any type of soap up there.

The idea that flossing before is better is not scientifically proven.

If you floss after, you bring the flouride toothpaste between your teeth, thus getting the benefit of cleaner teeth and less smelly crud in between. You can also rinse with mouth wash.

It's not that Americans are right and Great Britian is wrong, but there is that on going gag about bad teeth. ;)

On the other hand, the corporations that make floss probably pay dentists, too.

oh shit, i have one of those too. i honestly just don't bother flossing it. the area's so tender, it hurts like hell to floss. my dentist yells at me every time i go, but fuck it. it's either a moderate amount of pain every day, or a slightly larger amount of pain once every 6 months.

i imagine if i got into the habit of flossing it regularly it'd not be so bad but man, fuck that, it bleeds so much

i do floss everywhere else though. i floss after brushing, it never occurred to me to do it the other way. i also use mouthwash after flossing though, so maybe that evens it out?

cosmo105

i use a flossing toothbrush (http://www.orasweet.com/acuflosbrush.html) (it's weird at first and it tickles your gums. also, if your gums are bleeding when you floss you're either doing it too hard or have gum disease) AND i floss every night wrapping the floss around the entire tooth and making sure i get off any crud that might still be there. last time i went to the dentist, he was amazed - i had a forming cavity at the previous visit, and it stopped growing and the rest of my teeth were in great shape. he said, "whatever you're doing, keep it up."

I don't know anybody in the UK with any teeth. They're all toothless old crones with gum disease and probably face cancer too. If only we flossed more! :(

My dentist gets on at me to floss, but it makes me feel sick, so I don't. I have one filling and that's in a wisdom tooth that was unbrushable due to the fact that it refused to break through the gum properly. Apart from that, my teeth are a-ok.

Stop eating, America, then you mightn't all be so fat! LOLZ

I floss daily (sometimes skipping the weekend) and it's always prior to brushing my teeth.

I always thought that flossing before you brushed would push more grodies deeper into your gums. So, if you brush first, you get rid of most of the crap and then the floss picks up the stuff the brush missed, and then you rinse your mouth out with water or mouthwash. I think I'm right.

what do I know, I've had a broken tooth in my head for 2 years and haven't gotten it fixed because it costs too much. the stupid dentist I saw didn't believe me that it wasn't rotten, it just broke. years ago, my family dentist saw a hole in the center of one of my molars and said it was a mystery, it wasn't a cavity, so he just put a chunk of filling in there, but didn't do it very well, so when I chewed, the hard filling, pressed into my tooth, thereby further weakening an already weak tooth. and I tried to explain this to the new dentist and he was like, "nope", and I was like, "IT'S PHYSICS! YOU FUCKER!" and stormed out. I mean, the broken tooth doesn't even hurt, and it's not even brown like a cavity. I think it's just dead. I'm smarter than dentists.

never flossed before in my life. couldn't start now - it's too hard to do.

that's the thing about flossing, it's really hard to start. if you don't do it, your gums get all inflamed and shit, and it hurts like a bitch, and you bleed a lot. but after about a week or two, that all stops, and it doesn't hurt at all. as long as you keep it up regularly, it's easy. but it's real hard to start.

it's like mitch hedburg said, it's the opposite of smoking. "i was all sweaty and shaking, my friend goes 'what's wrong?', i said 'i'm about to floss'"

it's real satisfying once the pain stops though. like if you've had popcorn at some point in the day, and then you floss that night, and you're pulling little bits of seeds and shit out of your teeth, it's nice
