I was wondering if Irn Bru was available in the U.S. and apparently (according to wikipedia) it has to be modified before entering your country because it's banned as it contains cancer-causing additives.
Right, I really didn't need to read that while I was drinking the damn stuff.

did you know scotland is (i think) the only country in the world where coca-cola is not the #1 soft drink. here we love the orange stuff.

you can order it online...
Coca-Cola takes a lot of pride in being the world's favorite soft-drink, but it's got some tough competition in Scotland. More popular than Coke on a local level, and available with your Big Mac at the local McDonald's, Irn Bru is an inexplicable hit in Glasgow and the surrounding area. There's no question about it: Irn Bru is one-of-a-kind. Its orange color reminds the consumer of orange soda, but not exactly; it also possesses a sort of deep, zesty hue that recalls shades of rust, or wine. The initial smell is clean and cool, and vaguely reminiscent of tangerines.
DR1 Barrs Irn Bru 330ml $1.45
DR01 Barrs Irn Bru 500ml $2.37
DR02 Barrs Irn Bru 1 ltr $3.50
Drinking Irn Bru is an experience unto itself. There's an initial rush of flavor, but of what sort is unclear; and then the distinct taste of water. Utilizing Scottish techniques that elude explanation, Irn Bru somehow manages to taste more watery than water itself.
The verdict is positive: Irn Bru is refreshing, oddly colored, and unique. It's only a matter of time before American eccentrics are washing down their fish and chips with its sparkling flavour.

Irn Bru is amazing, it's the worlds best hangover cure in a 500ml bottle.
What I dont get is the cheap knock offs or supermarket stuff. It pales into insignificance next to "true Bru".

I dunno, I've had "Freeway Iron Brew" and it tasted pretty much the same. Not as fizzy like, but good nonetheless.

hahaha! fantastic.
you can't really explain what irn-bru tastes like. doesn't taste like any fruit in the world. but it's orange. and it's, um, sweet. and.. stuff. according to IRN-BRU usa people have described it as "vanilla/citrus" (hmm.. i think not) and that "there is virtually no aftertaste as it is made with real sugar". which is true.
lol @ little j. just saw your sig!

OMG i love scotch eggs. really, i do. everyone makes fun of it :( i love scotch pies, too! and (vegetarian) haggis. and black pudding. and scotch beef! oh man, living in scotland is fun.
j, i'll gladly send you one but i think a mini-can would be the safest way forward else someone gets a big explosion of orange stuff in their face. fo' realz, you want some? i'll send it. on the condition that you write a report on the exact taste dimensions of it, though. just like *jane and her brown sauce experiment!

i've had a bit of wine, but i asked my boyfriend on the phone to describe what irn-bru tastes like for my interweb friends and he said this:
originally said by claire's boyfriend ranald:
"like what you would imagine bubblegum juice would taste like, and a squeeze of lemon/lime/kumquat juice (???!), a nail left in it to rust and a little spoonful of miscellaneous powder from your boyhood chemistry set"
iz true!
he also asked me to tell you all about the 36 year old who got stomach cancer after drinking 5 litres of irn-bru a day.

The fact the stuff closely resembles the urine of a very ill, dehydrated person means I cannot drink it. And also because it tastes like pure chemicals.
I used to quite often when nursing 'get a round of Irn bru in' (ie, go about with piss bottles and empty catheters, just lovely.)

I used to drink gallons of the stuff. Free soft drinks in bar jobs, and all that. It tasted good with Tequila.
I'm back from the pub after drinking vodka and irn bru (y) its awesome. Irn bru is the shit. I was pissed off last week after going to burger king in Aberdeen, after a night out seeing DJ Yoda, and finding out they don't serve irn bru. The week before I was seeing DJ Shadow in Glasgow and stopped by Mc Donald's on the way back to the hotel and got some irn bru (y) Mc Donalds ftw. Drunk ftw.
Didn't Scottish people boycott when Mcy Dees didnt serve irn bru when it first opened?

Right.
So.
This stuff. Ok. It comes in a wee bottle with a man shaped man on it. It is orange. One can only describe the colour as orange, so I will. When I unscrewed the lid, it let out a slight fizz and an odur that reminded me of burst concrete bags at work, which is a good thing, because I love sniffing concrete.
The first thought that pops into my head as I savour it is fanta, yet, it is not like fanta. Not really. It is as if someone decided to invent asprin flavoured orange fizzy drink, but was ridiculed so much that they had to cut their project short, only to be rediscovered by nazi scientists in the early 40s, who subsequently cut out the asprin and added more fizz.
It's taste is unlike like any metal I have tasted before. I would describe it closer to germanium than to any alloy known to man.
I liked it ALOT, and would much prefer to see it seeping out of the drinks dispenser at Subway than fanta or coke.

Oh man this thread makes me really really want some Irn-Bru. I used to drink it everyday when I was like 11, it was my favourite drink, but I haven't had any in about 5 years. I'm getting major cravings now, it's better than crack.

Definately has magical hangover cure powers. Doesnt matter how rough I feel a 500ml bottle sorts me right out.
Does anyone else think it tastes best out of the glass bottles? You dont see them so much now.

shyyyeeahhh man! local, uh, cornershop sells them and all the rest of the barr classics like lime-ade and red kola.
we used to have the glass bottles all the time - you're right, there is something just so much more satisfying about it.
when my boyfriend was at university, in first year he and his mate collected dozens and dozens of bottles - shatloads - and returned them all to a cornershop to GET PAID, YO! in scotland you get about 20p, i think, for each glass bottle you return to a store. cool eh?

You get 5c in South Australia, but you have to return them to a special depot of some sort. The rest of our fair country doesn't care about recycling.
I find any drink tastes better coming out of a glass bottle. I always presumed it was because being stored in a tin, or a plastic, will effect the contents as opposed to glass.
