well, I find it interesting anyway
long story short, dude is a Muslim (first one ever elected to Congress) who will take his oath with his hand on the Qu'ran rather than the Bible. Naturally, conservative christians are having an absolute SHIT FIT over it...and also conversely overlooking the fact that Jews have done the same with the Torah.

For Ellison to take the oath of the Bible, that's not going to mean anything for him.
The Koran just makes sense.

^ yeah thats how I feel.
Taking an oath on a book you have no faith in is pointless. Might as well just swear in on a stack of Hustlers.
i think it's pretty obvious what's happening here. they just want him to touch the bible so that it will consume him in holy flames for being a heathen
bibles still do that, right?

They don't actually take the oath on anything. They have a second, separate photo op with a book if they want to. So it's even more of a non issue.
Keith is my congressman. (y)

Ah you beat me to it :p , I was going to say that.
Also, what happened to "winning the hearts and minds"? This will go a long way toward a better relationship with muslims.

THEY DON'T TAKE THE REAL OATH ON A BIBLE. They all get in a room and raise their right hands and swear to uphold the laws or whatever. Just like if you're on a jury, or a witness in just about any legal proceeding.
They can have a separate photo op with a bible or other book later on if they want to. Ellison wanted his own religious book in his photo op.
Courts have had oaths for everyone for ages. Some religions won't "swear" but they will "affirm". Some people won't say "so help me god."
SO ASK YOURSELVES: Who is making this non issue an issue and why? To distract you from the real problems we need to address?

That seems to be all they can do now... or for that matter in the last 10 years or so. They certainly don't want anyone judging them by their record.
i like the way ellison has been carrying himself - with pure class - in the face of right-wing blowhards like glenn beck, and now rep. virgil wood (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061222/ap_on_go_co/ellison_quran).

Definitely. I saw him appear on Wolf Blitzer's show and I was quite impressed with him. He'll make an excellent Congressman! (y)
