All in all, he was a pretty decent human being. I wouldn't have pardoned Nixon (but I understand his motive) and it's good Carter defeated him, but it wasn't easy for any President to handle the mess that was Watergage, and all things considered, he tried his best.

Do you like football?
Do I ever!
Do you like nachos?
Yes, Mr. Ford.
Well, why don't you come over and watch the game and we'll have nachos, and then some beer.

RIP mang.

Aw dammit, where is that SNL clip of Dana Carvey (as Tom Brokaw) doing various "Gerald Ford died" scenarios?

Gerald Ford was a good guy. He also wins the record for oldest living president (post-office obviously).

I also instantly thought of the Simpsons episode with him at the end.:(

Yeah, but see, the thing is -- Chevy Chase is pretty much out of work now.

Oh.

Back in the day, Chevy's shtick on SNL was to make fun of President Ford for tripping and falling, etc.

Obviously, Chevy's been unemployed for years now, anyway; I was just being a dick.

meh, its not like it was sudden and unexpected. Dude was 93 years old.

anyway, he was basically seen as "better than Nixon" and beyond that, little else. I dont think he was a bad guy but he was a pretty whatever president.

i can appreciate the fact that, like nixon, gerald ford was a moderate, but this (http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB62/) is inexcusable.

I ALMOST got off for the national day of mourning, but an executive order just went through preventing me from having off Tuesday.

How nice. He did an interview about how he wouldn't have invaded Iraq but had the courage to request it not be published until he passed away. Way to have some nuts Ford.

...today's paper spoke of another interview where he made it pretty clear that pardoning Nixon was pretty much all about their friendship. That's kind of sad. Noble in one way, and really sad in most others.

Brett and I went to his viewing on Saturday night. Took about 1.5 hours to get through the line/security and see his coffin. It was worth it, though. The Capital Rotunda is absolutely amazing, I'd never been in Congress before. They gave us a little fancy printout card with Ford's name and dates on it, and we signed the condolences book. My friend's family saw us on CSPAN because apparently they were filming live 24/7 there.

Oh yeah, and NBC4 interviewed Brett.

It's interesting to read some of the liberal commentators (Paul Krugman comes to mind) lionize Ford and compare his moderation to the 1994 Gingrich revolution.

Seems like they even wax poetic about Reagan, now that he's dead.

Wonder how they'll react to H.W.'s or Carter's passings?

abcdefz

President Carter will probably be lionized, but that's easier because of his ministry work after his presidency.

I'm talking about when he's dead.

Will it still be an issue with some of the jewish media commentators?

I dunno. They found ways to even be nice when President Nixon died; I don't think President Carter will get less respect than that. It'll probably be a comment buried in paragraph eight or something. "Although controversial in some circles for his book Mien Kampf..." :D

I have always liked Ford. I think he would have been a better president in 1976 than Carter, and I think that maybe Reagan wouldn't have been president in 1980 if Ford had won in 1976. I also loved Dole as VP. Those debates were hilarious, but Dole didn't look very presidential.

I think that people still don't like Reagan's policies if they didn't like his policies before. He still ignored AIDS and the 1980s still look shitty, but I think that everyone needs to give him credit for accomplishing what he set out to accomplish. I've had that fight with my Reagan-hating friends for years. I absolutely hate most of what the man stood for, but I have to admit that he was effective.

Carter will always be remembered as a shitty president but a good man and excellent ex-president.

I think that Bush the Elder will have almost no profile in the long-term because not much happened during his term that history will care about. He will be known more for being Bush the Younger's father. And I kind of like Bush the Elder but I think that's how it will go down. I also think that Clinton will have a low profile in history, except for the sex and impeachment footnote.

W will go down as one of the worst presidents of all time. Even my republican political friends now admit this.

Never very fond of Gerald Ford. Being an ex-drunk I've always loved Betty Ford for her candor and drive in battling the disease of alcoholism. She rocks.....

My reasons for not liking Ford does have much to do with his pardon of Nixon. I didn't really want to post here about it because this seems to be sort of a Ford lovefest' (I'm in love when it comes to Betty right up to the 13th step).

I just read an excellent ed-op in the LATimes which summarizes my feelings on Ford to a T and also casts some much needed light on what really happened to our National consciousness during Fords tenure.

Robert T. Hartmann coined the phrase "our long national nightmare is over," that President Ford used as he pardoned Richard M.Nixon. At the time Hartmann was a Cabinet-level counselor President Ford.

Our long national nightmare -- still going strong
The man who coined Ford's most hopeful phrase was among the first to learn that Cheney and Rumsfeld would use Watergate as an excuse to expand executive power.
