They're probably not being mean. Workplaces are very sacred, and people are always a little guarded at first. If anything, don't try as hard to be civil. Just get on with your job, and eventually people will loosen up. They need to trust your work, before they even consider you as a person. Because the first thing they'll bitch about is your work.

i don't think i'm in a threatening position for any of them at all. i get paid less than all of them, and i do one of the dirtiest, most undesireable jobs. i would have thought they were glad that they didn't have to do it. i dunno, it's not enough to make me want to quit, but sometimes i just feel kinda sad. then i go play with puppies and it's ok.

I work with mostly all girls and we don't fight. maybe because it's a manly environment. our boss called us "feminine tough girls".

I was definitely treated differently at first though, like they made me sweep and take out the trash a lot. also I'd get in trouble for doing stuff too slow. but then I was all, "hey, I rule" and then were like, "yeah, my bad".

maybe, somehow, it's their form of weeding out the weak so that they aren't constantly investing themselves in someone who isn't inclined to stay.

just like you're getting to know them, they're getting to know you. the shitty side is for you, because you're going into a place they've been in for some time. once they see you're not willing to leave over their trifling bullshit, they'll stop and will actually start being friendly.
