Children of Men just opened here. I'm pretty big on Cuarón at this point.
Letters from Iwo Jima is coming.
Pan's Labrynth.
The Good German, though that one's supposed to kinda suck.
...and I still haven't seen The Good Shepherd, Little Children, or Babel.
This might just be a big old movie-hopping weekend.
What are you folks looking forward to?

Finally a GOOD modern movie on Iwo Jima. Nothing will ever beat the one with John Wayne in it. One of only like three movies in which his character actually dies.

This weekend? I'm jealous about Pan's Labrynth. We don't get that one for a couple of weeks.

1. That's a crime against life; see it. It's not terribly good, but it's one of those 'oh yes I've seen it' movies.
2. If one of those 5 isn't The Searchers then you've also commited a crime.

Heather and I went to see Booby last night. I was pretty impressed by that one.
I think that means I've been out to the movies 3 times this fall/winter. That's a lot for me.

Spider-Man 3
Pretty much the most anticipated movie I can remember; a close second is Grind House. The trailor makes me skeptical though.

I think more than anything, it's meant as pure, thrilling entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less. And thus I think for what it is, it's going to be absolutely fantastic.
Oh add me on for the excitement on My Name is Bruce and Spider-Man 3.
also, I forgot, Pan's is only a limited release. Maybe if I drove to LA but I don't see that happening tonight. DAMN! haha. What a tease. Ugh.

I'd like to see the new Will Smith one - The Pursuit of Happyness. It looks like a bit of a tear-jerker so might have to go on my own, lest anyone find out I can actually cry
...The Good Shepherd...

pan's labyrinth is out here already but i haven't got anyone to come with me yet. flatmates were a-touring with their music/theatre respectively before christmas and there is no way in hell that i could persuade ranald to come with me (no scary films for him, the big wuss!). so maybe in the new year.
some of children of men was filmed in glasgow! i was going to work on it running for a couple of days but then they brought their own crew from london  for most of the positions so i missed out. oh well!
the film i am most looking forward to seeing is last king of scotland.

yeah i saw the good shepherd the other night. robert deniro has clearly demonstrated that he can direct, and this film had many promising moments and elements to it, however on the whole it was just way, way too aggravatingly slow. it was excruciating to sit through in some moments, as specific scenes took forever to develop or conclude, ditto the fact that i kept waiting for the movie to end.

sin city 2
spiderman 3
the kingdom
transformers
the simpsons
the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford

Psyched.
That and Children of Men are starting tomorrow at one of the theaters I like. They've both been at a place I kind of avoid. So I'll be seeing these place Volver this weekend. (y)
At the cinemas I like:
Opening 1/5/2007
The Children Of Men
Little Children
The Painted Veil
Opening 1/12/2007
The Good German
Notes On A Scandal
Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno)
Opening 1/19/2007
The Last King Of Scotland
Letters From Iwo Jima
Venus
Right on. (y)

Kate Winslet was brilliant and there's a narrator, which was interesting...long but I didnt notice until I looked at my watch when I got out. If you read the book, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the movie.
Going to see Pan's this weekend...what have you heard?
Ohhh...I saw Volver last weekend...it was just ok, I love Penelope and just to watch her is ice candy, but it was kinda confusing. Let me know your thoughts when you see it. It's getting rave reviews.

Mostly very very very positive. A minority on forums are bitching about things which blew the movie for them, so I don't know. I hope they're things I can roll with, but it sounds kind of fundamental: like the girl is racing against the clock but keeps stopping to dawdle pointlessly; stuff like that.
The consensus seems to be that it's great, though. (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/pans_labyrinth/)

Children of Men just opened here. I'm pretty big on Cuarón at this point.
See it. I saw it when it first came out over here, seems like a very long time ago now. Any idea why it took so long to get over the pond?
Anyway, amazing movie, I loved it. It's the kind of film that creates and depicts a world that's so cool you just wanna climb into the screen and walk around taking pictures. Plus there's some amazing steadicam work in there and a lot of nice little touches that help immerse you in the world. I remember at one point theres a really long steadicam shot through a warzone scene and some blood splashes on the lens; because it's all done in one shot it stays there for another 3 or 4 minutes after. Thinking about it now, I'd say it was probably my favourite film of '06. (y)

Psyched 2.
I imagine it was held off to be released during "awards season." It's going wide this weekend.
There's also the chance that a studio is wary that England won't "translate" to the States if it's not Harry Potter or James Bond or something. I mean -- look at "The Queen." It's considered to be this big surprise hit and all, but it's still only made about $25 million over here, which ain't a lot for a "hit." It's a weird perception thing.

It's more like the world of Half-Life 2 than England. But I see what you mean. There's probably some shit in there that most non-British people wouldn't understand.
Anyway, see it as soon as you can and let me know what you think. (y)

Also, stop typing so loudly please.

and who the fuck is Pan, anyway?

It's not even supposed to be Pan, anyway. It's just a faun, but US distributors thought we'd respond more to the name "Pan," as if it were a satyr or something.
