Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been executed by hanging at a secure facility in northern Baghdad for crimes against humanity.

What do you guys think happens now?
---

I am loathe to feel any remorse or pity for this man, but something inside me tells me this was just wrong. Not just because I oppose the death penalty in general, or because of the obvious reaction of Bush being just as culpable(maybe even more so).

It's because I am dreading seeing the inevitable reaction to this. The media will be salivating over any video or pictures they can get their hands on, other people will perhaps drink to it, or celebrate in their own fashion; comments and jokes will be exchanged, people with no knowledge of the whole sorted history of Saddam and the US will snicker and go on about their business as if somehow this has nothing to do with them while deep inside something will tell them that they do indeed have their own little measure of responsibility and that will very quickly be ignored.

At least it's over...

Although the country is in a mess, the troops need to get out now, in my opinion.

i do oppose the death penalty, no matter who it is that is sentenced to death, and no matter the tribunal that delivers the punishment.

in this particular instance, to me, it's sorta like the u.s. government got to assassinate him through a long, drawn out route where the goverment could absolve itself of responsibility.

regardless of what he did in the past, he is a human being who deserves to be spared a sentence that is totally about retribution and retaliation.

Very good point... that thought crossed my mind as well.

What's the point of celebrating someone's death. That's a very destructive way of thinking. I don't believe anything good will be the result of capital punishment.

Of course he was a douchebag, like so many others, but he deserved a fair trial like any person does no matter what the charges might be. His trial has been heavily critisized for not meeting the standards of any fair trial.

Hope those poos iraquis will eventually have som well deserved peace in their country. They've suffered enough.

It's not going to solve anything. I personally don't believe he's dead, but hey. They either were worried about him being freed, or spilling the beans on the dealings with chemicals all those years ago.

He showed an awful lot of dignity if that was his last moment, though. Has Bush passed his score yet?

Saddam's death is one of the few good things to come out of this war.

This is really ironic, saddam being hang that is, really what will it change.....nothing! Well more chaos and violence!

Bush and company deserve the death penalty as well. Will they get it, NO, they are above the law . They are similar if not worst then saddam because they are doing massacre all over the fucking planet.

Do you think that this is a justice?

I personally think that it is a big JOK!

When Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield and all the others will be hang, then i will take this system of justice seriously.

But for now, i feel like i am at the theatre ,watching a rubbish movie where you can see all the flaws and the pathetics actors playing in it!

Pitiful performance, i must say!

Found on this Blog, Jesus' general (http://patriotboy.blogspot.com/2006_12_24_patriotboy_archive.html#116747272502295 172)

George W. Bush

The Lord's Chosen

Your Majesty,

There is only one course left for you to take now that Saddam bin Laden is finally dead. You must give a speech in prime time detailing your long battle against this man. Your father should be made to kneel down beside you as you address the nation, so that once and for all, the world will know that you are a better man and a greater leader than him. Saddam's dead, naked body should be draped over the podium as you speak, and once you've finished, you should have your way with it to demonstrate that you've achieved the only thing you ever really wanted to accomplish in Iraq, the total domination of the man your father couldn't control, not with weapons sales or war. Then, you should bring our troops home.

Heterosexually yours,

Gen. JC Christian, patriot

A dangerous precedent has just been set and the country is oblivious it would seem.

Just throwing this out there for the hell of it but ...

At this point, isn't George Bush et al. just as guilty of crimes of torture, murder etc. as Sadaam was at this point? What will they do about that?

Oh wait ... right ... nothing ...

That seems fair. (n)
