View Full Version : music that got you through high school
or is currently getting you through high school
or that you expect you may listen to a lot in high school
for me, i seem to remember listening to the offspring a lot. i thought ignition was like the coolest fucking album ever, but i'm listening to it again right now and it honestly isn't very good. it's very uh, adolescent, but then again, so was i at the time. i still think smash is pretty cool though, but maybe it's just nostalgia. too bad they fucking suck now. as far as i know, i stopped listening to them after americana. maybe they redeemed themselves. unlikely.
the beastie boys of course, i listened to them alot. they were actually the band that got me into music in the first place, before that i never really listened to any music. then i saw the video for intergalactic (yeah, i was a late bloomer, sue me) and fell in love. i don't listen to them as much as i used to, but they'll always have a special place in my somewhere for that. i remember thinking that i was so cool for listening to shit like paul's botique and check your head and assuming that nobody else had ever heard of it, but it turns out they had, and i could have made friends with those people and almost certainly had sex with one of them (turns out she had a crush on me, but i honestly didn't even notice her, but that's a different thread), but i didn't, i had my head up my ass
i'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but i liked slipknot too. i wasn't one of THOSE kids, but i did like them. i was a lame high school kid, it's true, but i wasn't actually as lame as i believed i was at the time. maybe if i'd listened to less slipknot, i'd have figured it out
i liked nirvana, but i never went nuts over it. which is odd, because looking back, i think i was the kind of kid who you might expect would be a nirvana dork, but no
i will say this, at no point in my life did i ever like the insane clown posse. i've got that going for my record, if nothing else.
what about you? what music defined you at that age?
edit: oh yeah, green day. i liked green day a lot. i still kind of don't hate them actually, but i don't talk about it much

The first year there was a lot of oasis (hey, I was 11).
After that came Beck, Blur, The Beasties, The Specials, Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age and a whole shiteload of other music.
I always brought my Discman to school with me, and on my lunchbreak I used to go to the shoppingcentre next to my school and buy CD's.
I was always 'that girl with the headphones', because I never even heard a word the teachers were saying.

I have a high school music playlist on my ipod. It's not music that I love or that moved me, but music that puts me right back in that high school gym class, or choir, or whatever. Most of it's highly embarrassing crap.

I listened to mainly punk rock and drank very large amounts of alcohol. So much alcohol that my nickname was shaky. From the morning shakes....which I usually cured by drinking some morning beer, in the morning of course.
I also was one of a very few who actually loved rock-a-billy. (still do. went to Vegas last month for a rock-a-billy convention)
My viewpoint and outlook was very narrow and skewered by too much drink, I wasn't a nerd or outcast, I had plenty of friends and still do from school....I just never liked all the regular radio stuff.
Things changed dramatically when I entered the stark raving reality of adulthood. I like most everything nowadays and have always been frustrated that musical talent isn't my forte.

Beastie Boys, obviously. I too thought nobody listened to them. And at the time (pre-HN) it was kind of true in mainstream NZ. Cool kids knew what the deal was though.
Wu-Tang. I really got into them when I bought Liquid Swords. Dubbed the Cd onto a cassette and used to skate with it blaring in my ears. Went to a midnight opening for Forever.
Suicidal Tendencies/Infectious Grooves. I guess Mike Muir was the fattest emo around before the term existed.
Sebadoh, but only Harmacy. Same with Sonic Youth, just the one album (Dirty).
Helmet. Well, Meantime and then later on Aftertaste. I liked them. I remember when the first Korn album came out, Helmet started playing more shows. Calling themselves 'The REAL Korn'.
The Complete Minor Threat Discography helped me understand a lot of stuff. And while I didn't always live by the lessons, it was nice to know that youth isn't always wasted on the young.
Iron Maiden ftw.
De La Soul. 3 feet was a great album for a kid, and I bashed the shit out of Dead and Buhloone for about 5 years. Never got Stakes is High, funnily enough.
This tape I got off a friend called ChopShop 2. Was all hip-hop instrumentals. Had a sick song which chopped up the vocal of Shimmy Shimmy Ya and other Dirt songs. Raw, Dirty, ODB
The Roots. Maily illadelph halflife. I fucking loved that album. I sold it years ago, and haven't heard it since 98.
Nirvana's In Utero and Incesticide mainly. A bunch of us used to pick the basslines on this shitty old acoustic guitar. Aneurysm sticks out in my memory.
The first two RATM albums as well. I flipped for the first one, loved the second one more.
Everywhere I went I had headphones on. So this shit was part of like a soundtrack to my life. I would be buried in this music for 2/3 of my day, usually.

Same as Kid P said, I loved the hell out of Suicidal Tendencies as well as Infectious Grooves. Some of the best guitaring and singing of that era IMO. I wouldn't call Muir fat though. He was pretty damn buff and I wouldn't mess with him. EMO is an interesting term I suppose because it seems likely to fit them, haha.

Are we talking Stray Cats or the real deal?
HA ha ha...no not the stray cats....not a bad group, but they're almost like a parody of rock-a-billy.....while they was looking pretty the Blasters and Robert Gordon was kicking ass.
The real deal mostly, they've had a radio show up here in Seattle left of the dial for the past 15+ years called "Shake the Shack (http://www.kexp.org/programming/progpage.asp?showID=6&1413)" which is more in tune to what I'm into. You can dial into with your computer if you like.
even now if I go out for a night on the town for any reason choice #1 is the Tractor Tavern (http://tractortavern.citysearch.com/page/ntqa/CALENDAR.html) which showcases this type of music. It's great fun with hot chicks, motorcycles dancing and maybe a fight or two.
i just checked the calendar and I see the Blasters are coming in Feb! :D
I can't remember much, but I'll just mention Beastie Boys, The Pharcyde, De La Soul, The Offspring, Wu-Tang, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and video game soundtracks.

Dammit, yeahwho's avatar is fucking awesome. Mongoloids rule.
Ok, time to embarrass myself a lil more.
I liked a few songs from Cinderalla too. Nobody's fool and Night Songs were like my favorite.
Def Leppard- Pyromania and High and Dry cassettes were constantly playing. I freaking hated anything they did after Pyromania though.
Listened to a little bit of Whitesnake but never bought a c.d. of thiers.
I got into the Cult a little to cause my cousin was a huge fan and he turned me on to them. We'd listen to Fire Woman in the car to get hyped up before we went to our skate destination.
Ministy- The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste, The Land of Rape and Honey and Psalm 69 was were all overplayed cassettes by me too.

Truth be told, I didn't really get into music (or rather, get serious about music) until the very tail-end of high school. Before then, it was mostly random songs here and there.
Anyways, towards the end of high school was:
Radiohead
Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Weird Al" Yankovic
These were the big ones for me.
If this thread was "music that got you through JUNIOR High" the answer would be The Beatles without a doubt. Morning, noon and night was all Beatles, all the time.

true though - high school wasn't exactly tough times
in fact it was pretty easy [not talking about the work, but life as a high schooler generally was kinda sweet...same with uni]
anyway i was at high school from 1995 to 1999
i listened to lots of wu tang, seeing a big wu tang 'W' hand drawn or twinked onto a school bag was quite common
and i think what KP said about beastie boys was true...i listened to them alot also
in don't think anything can take me back to my teenage years like enter 36 chambers and ill communication
and later, rawkus soundbombing II
oh, i also liked garageland alot cos my sisters friend liked em and i thought she was cool, but she was alot older than me

The Clash
Nirvana

Reel Big Fish (yeah, my bro and I were real into ska at that time)
The Offspring (like everyone else, I loved that at the time, but that shit belongs strictly to adolescent years)
Pearl Jam
Pink Floyd
Jimi Hendrix
Rage Against The Machine
Beastie Boys
Sex Pistols
Ramones
Blink-182 (and I'll still enjoy them today, shut up)

I was going to mention that about myself too, i listened to the Beatles in Junior High all the time. Last year I made 2 Beatles mixes for people at work with kids in Junior high. The weird thing is I always just figure folks would have the Beatles catalog at home, but you know what? they fucking don't. There are alot of people who could give a rats ass about music, especially if it's going to involve investing time and money.
In High School I was mainly interested in drinking morning, noon and night.
Now I love music and spend at least two hours a week listening to new (to me) music be it 30's 40's 50's R&B or a 2007 mashup. Love it.

I discovered 'New Transistor Heroes' when I was 12 and it made me feel so cool. Even now there arn't too many people here who know about bis, but when I was 12... man, I was pretty much the only one. And it got me interrested in many other kinds of music. Also, manda was a bit of a rolemodel, being a chubby lass and all. Monstarr became my mantra song.
And then Social Dancing came out and it became one of my favourite albums ever and even the kids in my class thought it was kinda cool.
Ehm sorry. I always get kinda excited when people talk about bis.
PS: I also forgot to mention Radiohead. Also loved them from age 12. Showed me it is possible to feel sheer happiness just through beautiful sounds. And that you can be cool with a wonky eye.

anyone before or after Busary 98 is either too old or too young and their life prospects are lessened by this fact.
hahaha. I did Classics, English, History, Bio and Stats. I got 14% in Stats. Sat the exam stoned, and hadn't been there for a term. Still got a 'B' Bursary overall. Not trying to sound clever, because I know I don't. Just sharin.

beastie boys have been my favorite since 8th grade. i really do think i was one of the only kids in my school that listened to them. whenever i mentioned i liked them i'd always get the response "yeah, fight for your right is a pretty cool song". people just didn't get it. this was also 2001, so they weren't really all too popular amongst my age group.

Queen - I had all their albums by the time I was in the 10th grade. I used to blare their music when I drove my car.
Judas Priest - One of the few metal bands I listened to. I think they're great, dispite all the criticism I received.
The Beastie Boys - I had Hello Nasty before I was ever in High School, but when I picked up Check Your Head when I was in the 9th, my fandom of them really took off. Like queen, I used to play their songs really lound when I road in my car.
Led Zeppelin - Would not have, in any way, survived high school without my Zeppelin records. I think I wore out my Houses Of The Holy record, because I played it so much.
Public Enemy - I bought all of their albums in the 8th grade, but, like the Beastie Boys, my fandom for them didn't take off until the 9th grade, when I really started to appreciate Hip-Hop music, and not just listen to it.
The Sex Pistols - Anytime I felt like really rockin' out, I listen to these guys. Nevermind The Bollocks... is probably on my top ten favorite albums list.
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 'Been a fan of Hendrix since I was a kid. Jimi Hendrix is fucking awesom. The Jimi Hendrix Experience is in my top three favorite bands. 'Nuff said.
The Doors - I could not have survived high school without The Doors. They're one of the bands I played the most throughout my teen years.
The Rolling Stones - My grandmother is a big fan of the Stones. I guess she's the reason why I'm such a huge fan, too. I didn't have all of their albums, but I had alot of their albums. The albums I did have, I played alot.
Sublime - I got into Sublime when I was in the 6th grade. My mom had one of their records, and I listened to them all the time. By the time I was in high school, it was a damn fad to listen to Sublime. It really pissed me off, too, because I'm a big fan of their music. Nontheless, they're one of my long-time favorite bands. I've never gotten tired of listening to my Robbin' The Hood album, and 40oz To Freedom album.
